The Houston Astros filed a claim with Lloyds of London on Monday, hoping to recoup $15.6 million of the $17 million in salary due to Jeff Bagwell this season. Houston Astros attorneys are examining the policy to determine whether the team will be able to collect should Bagwell report to spring training as planned.

The 37-year-old Bagwell has an arthritic right shoulder, which inhibits his ability to throw. Last June, he underwent capsular release surgery in June and returned to the Astros to hit for below average stats, batting just .250 in 100 at-bats. Shortly after the Astros lost to the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 World Series, Bagwell began rehabilitating the shoulder in hopes of reclaiming his starting first-base job in 2006.
