Australia started well in their quest to win back The Ashes after the first day's play in The Gabba, Brisbane.

Australia won the toss and chose to bat first. England's bowlers were very out of sorts, with Steve Harmison struggling. Australia raced to 79/0 until Andrew Filntoff, the England captain, brought himself on to get out Matthew Hayden.

Australia's batsmen were brilliant, as Ricky Ponting, captain of Australia, made his 32nd Test century, 137 not out, to help Australia to 346/3 after the first day. He was supported by Justin Langer and Michael Hussey, who both made 50s. Hussey will resume his innings tomorrow.

England's bowlers were expensive - only Flintoff and Ashley Giles performed well.

So Day 1 was definitely advantage to Australia, but the pitch looks to be completely flat, so England could quite easily score as many as Australia look like they'll get. A ray of hope for England, when they took the new ball, it swung - something the old ball didn't do. England need more of the same tomorrow morning to get back into the game.
