Asante about to get paid?

The Boston Herald (and NFL Network) are reporting that Patriots corner Asante Samuel plans on signing his 1-year franchise tender and joining the team sometime next week. Samuel, designated as the Pats' franchise player after the 2006 season, has been out of training camp and holding out since spring. The Patriots play at the Carolina Panthers Friday night. Tom Brady is expected to play, returning from California after the birth of his son Jonathan (I nearly wrote an article about Brady's child, but figured none of you would care much, unlike my best friend and I who have been obsessed with the size of Bridget Moynahan's stomach all summer. I digress).

Samuel is a key member of the Pats' secondary. The 26-year-old tied (with Denver CB extraordinnaire Champ Bailey) for the NFL lead with 10 interceptions in 2006, and scored twice in the playoffs on interception returns. Drafted in the fourth round of the 2003 Draft out of Central Florida, Samuel has 16 career interceptions and 43 passes defensed. His rookie contract that ran out after 2006 paid him a total of about $2 million. The one-year franchise tender, comprised of the averages of the yearly salaries of the top 5 paid players at his position, comes out to $7.79 million guaranteed. So if Samuel signs the tender and gets hurt, he'll make four times as much as he's made over the course of his 4-year-career. Samuel has threatened to not sign the tender, and sit out until Week 10 to earn an accrued season under the NFL pension plan.

While holding out, Samuel has been working out in Florida. If he returns next week, he gives himself two weeks to prepare for the season opener on September 9. It's been rumored Samuel was originally looking for $25 million guaranteed. For some perspective, Colts DE Dwight Freeney earned $32 million guaranteed with his new contract with the Colts, the largest contract ever for a defensive player.

I understand Samuel has outplayed his rookie contract by leaps and bounds. I understand 10 interceptions is a lot (the number is deceiving, but 10 ints is 10 ints, I guess). I understand the rest of Pats secondary is either old or unproven. I can even understand Samuel looking for Champ Bailey money. But not THAT much. He said his was "disrespected" by what the Patriots were originally offering, but it seems as though he has softened his position a bit.

Meanwhile, in training camp, Randall Gay has been impressive manning Samuel's left side of the field, and taken advantage of the opportunity. The LSU product was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2004, and started Super Bowl XXXIX against the Eagles.

The Brady links are hilarious. I highly suggest them.

This was the longest most pointless holdout ever. Well... Maybe Larry Johnson

Agreed. LJ was absolutely pointless; this one was legit, since he wasn't under contract, and he severely underpaid.

I would have to disagree on that one. If anything I am more sympathetic towards LJ and think his hold old had greater merit. He is extremely underpaid for the value he provides. That is besides the point though. He was trying to geta long term deal before next year. He is in the last year of his contract and was most likely going to get franchised next year. With the life expectancy of running backs and more importantly runningbacks that are over worked (Take Jamel Anderson for example) the market for a 28 year old running back is very small and he would not get nearlyas much money as he would in a deal now. Cornerbacks play forever and are less likely to take the toll and wear on the body that a running back would.

The entire concept of holding out and missing games is stupid. By sitting out for the first ten games, the lose money and they are not going to gain it back when they resgn a new contract. It accomplishes nothing. There is a point where the threat might work, but once you hit the point were teams are not allowed to negotiate with franchised players, they might as well sign and try and get as much money as they can because the next contrct a team will not say that whey will reimbeurse you for the money you lost by not playing.

Exactly. Looks like Asante has come to his senses and decided to not let 8 MILLION DOLLARS on the table.

yeah but he's risking not getting Nate Clements money (which he could have if he was an FA)...plus...if he tears an ACL or something, he's completely screwed...

True but he has to deal with the rules. Rules state that a team can franchise him. If he as an issue with the tag, talk to the union. They signed onto it. He could get hurt walking his dog or driving, so yes it doesnt cover it. He might have been able to get more this past year, but he couldnt rules states. Suck it up, play and get as much money as you can now. Leave no money on the table. It is foolish to do that.

Not that i wish this on a personal level, but i hope samuel gets hurt...

This way, the NFL and the NFLPA can realize how irresponsible the Franchise tag is...if Samuel gets hurt (or sucks...because he's not really that good)...he's effed...he will never make more than he could have this year...

Franchise tag is great...for your team...that's it...

Samuel did this entire stupid holdout so he didnt have to go to training camp, how many players have we seen over the years do this, millions. Samuel is acting ridiculous, he is not Champ and he should not be asking for that much money, though I agree that he deserves more than what he was getting, but not that much.

I can understand what you're saying, but I think if he held out just to miss camp, there would be a hell of a lot more players holding out. Training camp sucks, but I'm sure if Asante has a preference of getting paid and staying home, or getting paid and being on the field, I'd like to think he'd take the latter.

Couple of thoughts.

1) He didn't do it to avoid training camp...you also don't get paid for trainign camp (players get about $800 in WAM money...that's it...seriously)

2) He's not acting ridiculous

3) Is he better than Champ Bailey - No

4) But to say he shouldn't be asking for more is BS...if you ask for a raise and your boss points to the best worker he has and says, you're not him...sorry...do you not get a raise...

IlliniEd is right that there are rules (and they're total BS rules)...its a valid point...then again, a player can hold out...there's not an actual rule against it (he just doesn't get paid)...the problem isn't the 8 million or so this year...that's really good...the problem is the security in a long term contract as well as the fact that, if he has a worse year next year, he will get less than he could have this year...which is unfair IMO

Do I think Asante Samuel is good? Sorta...i think he's extremely overrated and if you saw him play a lot last year, you'd know that those 10 INTs were a result of a lot of chances taken (and won)...but he also got burned a lot...

My point is kinda contradictory...but i hope you guys can see it...

Of course meg...you can't get a bigger contract unless you play...and players who go to training camp get to play more often (espeically in belichick's system) than players who don't...

There is a point where sitting out does absolutely no good to you as a player. The player does have a right to sit out. And if he feels that he is wrong it is his right to do it. However, with that being said, once the point comes where there is no way for you to wrok out a long term deal and getting the security that you desire, you have nothing to work with. You have no leverage. You might as well sign. All you are doing at that point is losing money. You are not proving a point by holding out. Holding out would not force their hand and give you a long term deal. They are handcuffed also and cant even if they changed their mind and wanted too. So really all you are doing is hurting your financial being right now. There is no given that next year or even this year you would have hit it big. Grab what you can when you can. And your right, it isnt a fair rule. But that hsould not be blaimed on the owners. Blame it on Gene Upshaw for negotiating it into the CBA. If they have problems with it, then change it when the new one comes around. Until then, deal with it and take the paltry 8 mil to play.
