Would deal with NFL spell end for ESPN Classic?

It was a place that legends were made of, at least according to its ads.

Launched in 1996 as the Classic Sports Network, ESPN Classic was a hugely original and successful idea – a channel dedicated to replaying classic sports events. On any given night, a viewer could watch a baseball, basketball or hockey game – and it that was usually a pretty good game, too.

If it was momentous, eventful or significant, chances are it’s aired on Classic. Steve Smith scoring in his own net to Jordan hitting a jump shot over Craig Ehlo to Joe Carter cranking a fastball over the left field wall have all aired, as have many, many other games.

As the channel grew, it added original programming: Sportscentury, a biography show on famous athletes that examined their lives and legacy; Top Five Reasons, which put infamous sports moments in new light; Classic Now, a show that put today’s sports headlines in historical context.

At the same time, the games started appearing less and less, often replaced by poker, tournament fishing and infomercials. Specialty channels, such as the NHL and NBA Networks, started airing their respective leagues old games. Major League Baseball began to sell copies of theirs both on DVD and online.

And the NFL, the most popular league in the US, never allowed Classic to re-air games in their entirety, selling highlights compiled by NFL Films instead.

But now the NFL is coming to ESPN Classic, and it could spell the end for the network.

According to Saturday’s Wall Street Journal, ESPN and the NFL are in talks to air NFL Network programming – most likely live NFL games – on Classic. Since the NFL Network’s launch five years ago, it has been plagued with problems: they have had disagreements with the two largest cable operators in the US: Time Warner and Comcast.

But Classic is a channel already carried by most operators. And as part of the ESPN brand, it has name appeal to every sports fan.

This move is also the latest that shows a trend to move Classic away from classic sports. In the past couple years, it’s carried live NCAA football and basketball games. Last June, ESPN announced it was stopping production of programming on Classic. And this summer, it has been airing parts of the Euro 2008 soccer tournament on the channel.

If they strike a deal with the NFL to show more live programming on Classic, why should ESPN continue to brand the channel as ESPN Classic, as opposed to simply ESPN3? And what of Monday Night Football – would it move to Classic as well?

A quick look at Monday’s ESPN Classic schedule shows two auto races, four episodes of Sportscentury and an episode of American Gladiators, among other programs.

Comparatively, Canada’s ESPN Classic – owned by TSN – shows two NHL games and a CFL match from 1990.

Maybe it’s just me, but only one of them sounds like a place that legends are made of.

I hope so... ESPN Classic has been a joke for the better part of this decade. What started out as such a promising idea (a home for great classic games 24/7) slowly turned into your one-stop network for sh*tty original programming like Cheap Seats and classic non-sports like poker and NASCAR. With the NFL Newtork taking over, we will get to see the Saturday night games late in the season, and we'll get classic NFL films programming. And almost everyone with expanded basic cable will get the channel, instead of a select few. With ESPN Classic such a waste of airspace nowadays, where's the downside?

It's been inching ever closing to being ESPN3 for a few years now. I've watched a good chunk of regularly schedule live programming on it.

I love NFL Flims. If ESPN Classic starts airing more NFL Films and NFL Games in general, I'd be sooooo happy. The quality of the stuff produced by NFL Films is even higher than the quality of the games they reproduce.

ESPN Classic needs to do a couple things:

1. Bring back their sick programming. I love Who's number 1 and Top 5 reasons you can't blame.

2. Stop airing Nascar, bowling, soccer, and every other stupid sporting events they're showing.

3. Fill the rest of the day with NFL content.

NFL Films is awesome. They can make the 1-15 season by the 2007 Dolphins sound like a successful year.

And the Greatest Games were fantastic also. My favorite is the 1998 Wild Card Game between the 49ers and the Packers.

One summer, I watched every team's 30-minute highlight. And they managed to make them all sound like they were on the cusp of winning a Super Bowl.

Who's the guy that narrates the actual highlights, though? Not John Facenda, but his replacement... If I had that guy's voice, you could all just kiss my ass.

We need a new network to come allong and stomp ESPN into it's rightful place. They may have been first, but that doessn't makle them best.

If FOX would get serious about it or if some billionaire dorkwad would realize that you can have an awsome netwrok without having to outbid for the right to air live events.

Look at CNN. It sucks, but if it was all sports, I'd watch all day! They should start a sports only netwrok, cut out the bullshit games no one cares about and just give us 24/7 sports info debate nd opinion.

Like Armchair comes to life!

CNN already had that. It was called CNNSI and it bombed spectacularly, lasting something like two or three years in the late 90s.

Considering they're trying to bid for Olympic rights for both the summer and the winter, I wouldn't want Buck and McCarver calling the US/Japan gold medal match....

And I'm going to toss this out here:

When you have little competition elsewhere, that's the ONLY way you can watch sports on TV. Versus is the only other option and when there is not football or hockey then it's bull riding 21 hours a day.

Thank goodness for the CBC, I can watch the Olympics, soccer, basketball, hockey, horse racing, equestrian, track and field, if I cared about baseball or curling then I could watch that, and yes, you can flip someone off even when it's 2:00 PM and it will not get censored.

Good Article. A real shame if true. I imagine each of the leagues will now get very protectionist about their history and highlights. It used to be about fans, but now is increasingly about the money, much like sports itself as a whole. This is partly why I remain more a classic sports fan than a modern one.
