Worst Quarterbacks of the Past 20 Years Tournament Round 3 Introducing Ryan Leaf

Round 3... INTRODUCING RYAN LEAF, ENTERING AFTER A WELL-DESERVED TWO ROUND BYE WEEK

In light of the Best Quarterback Ever Tournament and insightful suggestions on behalf of the fellow writers here at Armchairgm, I present the Worst Quarterbacks of the Past 20 Years Tournament.

In order to qualify a quarterback must have started the majority of at least one NFL season and never posted a rating above 70 during their years as a starter. I am only including the past twenty years due to the fact that passing statistics have drastically changed over time due to a multitude of factors such as pass interference and introduction of certain offensive schemes.

Voting is the same as Best Quarterback Ever Tournament with the exception you are voting for the WORST quarterback. (Ex. Gelbaugh is statistically worse than McNown so one would vote Gelbaugh if voting purely on statistics)

For any of you who have ever been a fan of team quarterbacked by any of these individuals, I extend my deepest condolences...

Here's the lineup... Seeds are based on Quarterback Rating

' X-Factor: X-Factor:' Ryan Leaf 3666 14 TD 36 INT Chargers

1. Stan Gelbaugh 2100 10 TD 22 INT 50.5 Seahawks

2. Akili Smith 2212 5 TD 13 INT 52.8 Bengals

3. Rusty Hilger 2584 11 TD 19 INT 52.8 Lions (ELIMINATED)

4. Browning Nagle 2489 8 TD 20 INT 53.5 Jets

5. Heath Shuler 3691 15 TD 33 INT 54.3 Redskins (ELIMINATED)

6. Andrew Walter 1715 3 TD 13 INT 56.3 Raiders (ELIMINATED)

7. Tom Tupa ( Yes the punter) 3430 12 TD 25 INT 60.5 Cardinals

8. Chris Weinke 3904 15 TD 26 INT 62.2 Panthers (ELIMINATED)

9. Randy Wright 7106 31 TD 57 INT 61.4 Packers

10. Ken Dorsey 1712 8 TD 11 INT 63.5 49ers (ELIMINAED)

11. Tommy Hodson 1823 7 TD 11 INT 64.1 Patriots (ELIMINATED)

12. Chuck Long 3747 19 TD 28 INT 64.5 Lions (ELIMINATED)

13. David Klingler 3994 16 TD 22 INT 65.1 Bengals (ELIMINATED)

14. Cade McNown 3111 16 TD 19 INT 67.7 Bears (ELIMINATED)

Round One:

  • Stan Gelbaugh, SEA vs. Cade McNown, CHI
  • Akili Smith, CIN vs. David Klingler, CIN
  • Rusty Hilger, DET vs. Chuck Long, DET
  • Browning Nagle, NYJ vs. Tommy Hodson, NE
  • Heath Shuler, WAS vs. Ken Dorsey, SF
  • Andrew Walter, OAK vs. Randy Wright, GB
  • Tom Tupa, ARZ vs. Chris Weinke, CAR

Round 2: Due to the fact only seven teams would advance, Weinke advances for receiving the most votes on the losing end

  • Stan Gelbaugh, SEA vs. Randy Wright, GB
  • Akili Smith, CIN vs. Chris Weinke, CAR
  • Rusty Hilger, DET vs. Tom Tupa, ARZ
  • Browning Nagle, NYJ vs. Heath Shuler, WAS

Round 3: RYAN LEAF ENTERS AFTER A WELL-DESERVED TWO ROUND BYE WEEK. Like Weinke last round, Gelbaugh advances for most votes on losing side.

  • Ryan Leaf, SD vs. Randy Wright, GB
  • Stan Gelbaugh, SEA vs. Tom Tupa, ARZ
  • Akili Smith, CIN vs. Browning Nagle, NYJ

I love how personal this is for Pack fans. Gelbaugh had MUCH worse numbers than Wright, but Wright still moved on. Funny.

Wright was prone to throwing his interceptions into the endzone. He was a drive killer, plain and simple. I don't remember Gelbaugh.

And the fact that you don't even REMEMBER Gelbaugh doesn't say anything to you about how much he sucked? The fact that Wright was even in the league long enough to throw 57 touchdowns says he's better than a lot of guys on this list. He might have thrown a lot of interceptions in the end zone, but this list is full of guys that wouldn't have even moved the ball THAT far (Ryan Leaf).

Wright's tenure in the league was not a reflection of his talent as much as it was a reflection of incompetent Packer management of the era.

Oh, and he was an ex-Badger. Not from the Alvarez Badgers, but from the 50 years of incompetence Badgers.

Which is worse:

  • A quarterback who sucks so bad that he's gone within a year or two thus freeing your franchise to begin anew?

OR

  • A quarterback who flashes enough signs of competence that you keep him around only to have him continually fail in the end thus keeping your franchised handcuffed for years?
Why do you think Packer fans are so forgiving when it comes to some of the plays that Favre makes? We remember the dark times.

Well, the one that hangs around and sucks things up is worse for the FRANCHISE, but that doesn't make him a worse QB. We're talking about worst QB, not which one was most detrimental to his team for the longest amount of time. You're talking about two different things. I mean, if you're going by that metric, then you'd have to say that Tony Banks and all his years of mediocrity was worse than, say, Quincy Carter in his three years with the Cowboys. That's not right at all.

Who are you to define what is right? This is a subjective poll. Each and every one of us can use our own criteria. My criteria is that Randy Wright sucks.

I don't think Tupa should be subjected to being in the running since at least he made something of himself in the NFL.

I think all of you forget how bad Akili Smith really was. He was horrible in Cinci but since he played for the Bengals it is brushed under the rug far too quickly. Smith all the way.

I don't know anything about Nagle, but I agree with you. I don't know how people are forgetting that Akili Smith is widely considered to be, along with Ryan Leaf, THE WORST draft bust of all time. He totally sucked during his insanely brief time in the pros. I think people are voting a little bit based on watching bad QBs for a long time, instead of factoring in HORRIFIC QBs that weren't good enough to last three seasons.

I think Akli Smith's bust is less his fault and more the scouts. He only had a good Sr. year and wasn't impressive the rest of his career. He's game film from college shows shaky footwook under pressure and a strong tendency to lock on to one option from pre-snap to throw. He should of never been a Top 10, much less a 1st round pick, an over-hyped kid gone bad.

Hey, I totally agree. That's why I'm so wary of people like Russell, Dixon, Cutler, or others that were pretty good and then got extreme hype because of a handful of games in their senior year. Smith was definitely the victim of hype, but it doesn't change the fact that he WAS drafted that high, he WAS a horrible QB, and he WAS arguably the biggest draft bust of all time.

Leaf, Tupa, Smith Nagle wasn't that bad. He played as a rookie 2nd rd draft pick (taken 1 selection after some guy named Favre). It really hurt his development.

Probably going to have to advance top vote getter amongst losers again, looks like Tom Tupa so far has a shot at the final four narrowly over Bagel. I'm just glad the NFL doesn't use this system.

I vote Tommy Maddox:) I don't care if he isn't even in the tournament, but I hated him SO much during his days in Pittsburgh, that he gets ALL my votes (I do thank him for getting injured though, he helped Ben Roethlisberger's career get off to a GREAT start). Ok, on a more serious note, I will go with Leaf, Gelbaugh, and Akili Smith.
