WORST EARLY PICKS OF 2008

With draft season right around the corner people are getting their practice in using a site called mockdraftcentral.com. I have participated in a bunch of mock drafts already this year and I've started to notice a few trends as well as other key information about the tendencies of how the drafts will pan out. In this article, we'll take a look at some of the worst early picks that I've seen on a consistent basis.

Ryan Braun leads the list of players that I just scratch my head at. Did he put up great numbers last year? Yes. Is it likely that he will duplicate those numbers? Possibly but unlikely. Pitchers will make adjustments, he is young and will go through some slumps. He is a good player and will most likely be a great player for years to come, but how can one justify the risk involved with taking a player in their first or second round pick on an unproved player? Drafting a bust in the first few rounds is the easiest way to spell defeat in fantasy baseball. While you are taking a chance people are drafting sure bets like David Ortiz, Mark Teixeira, Grady Sizemore, and Carl Crawford.

The next player on this list is Chase Utley. Second base has never been so deep. In later rounds (10+) you can get players like Jeff Kent, Dustin Pedroia, Kaz Matsui, Freddy Sanchez, Aaron Hill. Even players like Robinson Cano and Ian Kinsler are around in rounds 5-8. Chase Utley is a great player who can put up great numbers, but is he really worth a first round pick. He is good for 30-35 homers which is great, but the most he will give you is what 22 steals. He is a key part to the Phillies' offense, I don't think he will be running as much as fantasy owners would like him to. In years where there were only 3 good 2B, Utley was deserving of 1st round consideration, not this year.

And this is the one that baffles me almost as much as Ryan Braun. Why does Jose Reyes get drafted so early? Let's look at his numbers: .281 AVG, 119 runs, 57 RBIs, 12 HRs, 78 steals. Well that looks like a 2 category player to me. When I use an early pick on a player I'd expect at least a 4 category player. Are steals really worth that much? One minor, lingering injury to Reyes like a sore quad, makes him useless.

Take Jimmy Rollins for example: .296 avg, 139 runs, 94 rbis, 30 hrs, 41 steals. Are 37 steals really worth taking Reyes over a 5 category player. Steals are worth something, no doubt but players like Willy Taveras, Kaz Matsui, and Jacoby Ellsbury are available in rounds 9+. That's not to mention the players that come out of nowhere and gives us steal production, such as Reggie Willits, Ryan Theriot, Chris Duffy, Nate McLouth, Rajai Davis. How many players come out of nowhere and give us Jimmy Rollins production. Very few if any.

I doubt any of these picks will change going forward into draft season for most people. Alot of fantasy GMs are conditioned to draft a certain way and it is hard to change their ways. However, if you are smart enough to think outside the box you can take advantage of all the sheep who are drafting from the same magazine.

I think the same could be said for Prince Fielder.

If I'm in a 12-15 player league and I'm in the middle of the pack draft wise, then Braun in the second round (at about #22-25) is a pretty good pick. What changes things, at least for me, is his value will go down because of him moving to the OF. There's 6-8 top level 3B in the majors, and five times that total of OF.

Falcon, anyone who takes Rollins as the 1st SS is nuts, IMO...the guy really only puts up Jeter-like numbers (better power, less contact though)... Rollins won't come close to waht he did last year, but he's still a good...i just think people will overvalue him

and I disagree about Utley...no other 2b comes even close to what he does...his numbers are akin to what the current 3b crop does (he's similar to David Wright, really)...the guys you listed won't accomplish a .300 avg, .380 OBP, 30+ Hrs, 20 plus steals season what so ever...Utley is a total package guy and 2b, a respectable power-hitter with a great contact bat and decent speed...he merits a 1st round pick in a 10-12 team league IMO...

That's true Falcon, but how did you end up with Phillips? Trade, waiver, because there is no way you could have forcasted what he did last season. No one could have. And that's one key intangible to winning at fantasy. Picking out a guy who you think will bust out and riding him all season.

I have to disagree on Rollins. His numbers were inflated last year. He had a great season, although I believe there are a few others more deserving of the MVP but thats another story. Does nyone notice that he had 716 at bats. If you exclude last year hehad an average of 657 at bats a year. Those 59 at-bats were huge for him. Thats roughly another 20 hits more than he normally gets. Last year his numbers were not only a product of improved play but also additional at bats.

As far as top 5 shortstops go: 1) Hanley Ramirez 2) Jose Reyes 3) Miguel Tejada 4) Troy Tulowitzki

5) Jimmy Rollins

Not at all. So what are you better with when you hold 8th pick. Getting a Howard/Prince when hr numbers as awhole are down and then grabbing a Upton/Phillips next rd or grabing and Utley and putting your faith in say Carlos Pena?

Also...on Reyes, guys honestly I do not think he is better then Rollins at all (and neither is better then Hanley) people get wrapped up in steals. However Reyes is not even a five tool player. Yes if he stole 75+ plus every year an no one else stole half as much he would be worth it. However J-roll killed him in every other stat and still stole 41 bags. And last yr was first Reyes went over 70 plus swipes. He is more 60 o 65.

Rollins is good, but you cant tell me those 59 at-bats make no difference what so ever. Lets take a look at Rollins career averages excluding 2007 compared to 2007:

Hits Career-180 2007-212

HR Career-14 2007-30

RBI Career-64 2007-94

SB Career-34 2007-41

Avg. Career-.274 2007-.296

Slg. Career-.425 2007-.531

Do those obvious gaps in numbers mean anything to anybody. Rollins is a top tier shortstop, but he is NOT the player everyone is trying to make him out to be.

I believe he is a good player and he is evolving. I'm just saying a lot of people are beginning to think that he is the best shortstop. I think that he has reached his peak. Such differences in the numbers sometimes mean disaster, which I don't think will happen. I view Rollins as a .285/.340/.460 guy, not the .296/.344/.531 guy of last year. He will still be productive, I just think that there are ways to get similar production much later.

I do partially have a bias against Rollins because I don't think he should or won the MVP. There is obviously Holliday, but some people don't talk about David Wright. His Sept. line was .352/.432/.602. He got cast off because his team collapsed not him, in fact he improved when his team needed him most.

Also he steped up when Utley went out. But back to point I think He will be better pick then reyes for the next three seasons at least.

Chase Utley is a beast, no doubt. But if people constantly talk about position scarcity 2B is deeper than usual. Yes there is a significant drop off from tier 1 to tier 2 in 2B but it is not even close to the drop off in other positions.

3B and 1B are actually shallower this year than ever before. Look at the rankings for 3B. 10-15 are Lowell, Beltre, Gordon, Fields, Blalock, Escobar. That means in a 15 team league these are somebody's starting 3B. Are you feeling good about having Beltre or Fields as your starting 3B in a competive money league.

Same spots at 2B (10-15)Kendrick, Kent, Hudson, Polanco, Pedroia. With Hill at 16th. You're telling me you'd rather have Utley over Miguel Cabrera (which I see happen all the time in drafts).
