About the Author

Alex Holowczak
I am from Birmingham, England, and I am a fan of many sports, including F1, snooker and cricket. I don't much care for "soccer".

My name is not of British decent, but of Ukrainian decent. My grandfather was from Lvov, a town in Western Ukraine. During the Second World War, he ended up in Britain.

I am the reigning ArmchairGM Pool and Chess Champion, and I hope to retain my Pool trophy in 2008.

World Champion Higgins to recieve MBE

As you may have seen in the news, John Higgins will be awarded an MBE from The Queen in her New Year Honours List.

Higgins won the World Championship memorably in 1998, beating defending champion Ken Doherty 18-12. In the 1998 Snooker World Rankings, the World Championship win put him to Number 1, ahead of Stephen Hendry, at the time a 6-time World Champion who had held the World Number 1 spot for 8 seasons. He became only the third ever Scottish World Champion, succeeding Hendry and Walter Donaldson in 1947 and 1950.

Higgins won the first three ranking events in the 1999 season, and was expected to dominate in the way that Hendry had before him. However, he became a father during that season, and he was unable to maintain his standard. Given free reign to concentrate on snooker by his wife in 2006, Higgins came back to prominence in 2007, winning both The Masters and the World Championship for the second time. He led Mark Selby 12-4 overnight, but Selby faught back to 12-10, and then back to 14-13. In the latest ever finish to a Final at The Crucible Theatre, Higgins won the last four frames to win 18-13. The match ended at 1:30 in the morning. This propelled him back to Number 1 in the 2007 Snooker World Rankings.

Higgins will join Stephen Hendry, Steve Davis, Mark Williams, John Parrott and Jimmy White, all of whom have had recognition from the Queen in the past decade.

Higgins, 32, was "stunned" by the offer, but overall was delighted that snooker is getting recognition. He joked "Some people that have won MBEs have gone downhill a little bit afterwards; I don't know if they think I'm going downhill!"

Higgins certainly will hope to remain at the forefront of the game for many years to come.

This "snooker" seems pretty interesting. Maybe I should give it a try.

Snooker does exist in the USA. See 2007 United States National Snooker Championship, or even the official website.

WOW! I now know all the players involved in the championship now. Thanks Alex for that project. It really helps now that I have read your articles.

Now I can actually say, "Hey, I know that guy." And now I know how the playoffs work. ;)

Thanks again.

It seems like Stephen Hendry is THE MAN! It's too bad that I can't OPEN HIS PAGE UP, Alex, so I can find out more about him. ;)

Oops... Yeah... Er... Romi's right.

However, if you can view the Category:Stephen Hendry page and can get rid of all of the videos, then please do! Then I can add a selected few.

Hendry is falling down the rankings a bit though. In 2007, he slipped to 8th in the rankings, and is 12th provisionally. He's 38, so his time at the top may be coming to an end. That said, Steve Davis is 50, and he's still ranked 15th (but 27th provisionally).

And Romi, you didn't do the early World Championships! Joe Davis was "the man" long before Hendry came along. So was Fred Davis, he played in the Championship in the 1930s, losing to his brother in the 1940 Final. He was still playing in the 1984! He was 71 then!

But recently yes, Hendry is "the man!"
