There are some things about sports I don't like... the New Yuck Muts, the University of Michigan and those ASSCRACK UGLY HELMETS, the Floridamn Gayturds and the Miami Crimicanes. I also think that NASCRAP and professional wrestling are a HUGE waste of air time on television and would rather watch women's Jello wrestling!

Winter Classic was well worth watching

Okay, while some of us were recovering from hangovers, watching the Rose Bowl parade (and those exceptionally HOT USC Song Girls!) Florida fall flatter than a tortilla chip in the Texas sun, out shopping, watching internet porn or the "Law & Order" marathon on TNT, I got to watch something that some should see once in a lifetime if not twice. I saw an NHL game. Not just any NHL game, mind you. A game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo but not indoors. Outdoors, the way Lord Stanley would have wanted it and the old boy would have been proud.

Granted, it snowed a lot during the game and there were some problems with the ice rink at Buffalo's stadium but it was three hours well spent at the tube. It was old school hockey with very few penalites (5, three by Buffalo, 2 by the Penguins) and well played. It didn't have the ending that the home team wanted but the hope of the NHL, Sidney Crosby, who could be compared to LeBron James, scored the winning goal in a shoot-out. This was hockey at it finest, when it needed it the most. Overall, despite some of the technical glitches that NBC had, I would give them an A. I would also give an A to the city of Buffalo and the NHL.

Of course, they have to take the rink down because they were in Wilson Stadium, which is designed for football. At the same time, Buffalo defenseman Brian Campbell said that they should leave the rink up and make some money by opening it to the public. Outdoor hockey was a hit and both teams handled things quite well. Now if only the NBA or WNBA would play a game outside.

That's great, Cougar. Congrats on making your first NHL game. I heard that was a pretty good game. Unfortunately, I've never had the chance of making an NHL game myself, or an NBA game.

Thanks but I stayed home and watched it. Wish I could have gone but the tix were going for $400 a pop and they sold out quick!

It was a great game, and the "poor" conditions made it even better. Despite all of today's college football action, this game has a chance of making the first half hour of SportsCenter thanks to the snow. Now I only wish that the Bruins would play a game at Gillette Stadium.

The Patriots would be favored in that game.

I don't see why the NHL don't make the "Winter Classic" the All-Star game, and then hold that outdoors. That way there is a higher prestige in playing in the All-Star game. Also, you don't have two random teams playing outdoors.

Also, will the Phoenix Coyotes, or Tampa Bay Lightning ever get this opportunity to play a home game outdoors?!

I like the idea of holding an outdoor NHL game, but I think it should be the All-Star game, and it should be on Boxing Day or something, to avoid the clashes with the College Football games.

Not a bad idea Alex. Non-hockey fans might actually watch the All-star game.

Me too gunny. But then again, I don't watch any all-star games.

The only reason I suggested it was because of that reason exactly. I bet half of the players aren't that interested either. The NHL All-Star game would be good if it was:

a) Outdoors
b) NA v World

c) In the week between Christmas and New Year (the rest of the NHL can use it as a holiday break, which I'm sure they'd appreciate).

They tried that in Vegas a while back with a preseason game. Don't remember who played in it but I don't see Tampa, Atlanta, Carolina, Los Angeles or Phoenix trying it because the Bucs don't want their grass destroyed, the only outdoor football facility in Atlanta is Bobby Dodd Stadium/Grant Field, there are 5 (I think) colleges in North Carolina within a mile or so of each other that would all be fighting for that honor and Phoenix... might work if not for the elements, such as gila monsters and diamondbacks.

I of course watched nothing else yesterday from start to finish than the Winter Classic. I wish that it didn't take such a game for casual sports fans to pay any attention to hockey on a given sports day. But that pretty was a big reason this game was held. I'm talking have hockey fans being overwhelmed with seeing a game where it takes you back to your childhood playing pond hockey while getting the casual fans to watch and think "Hey, this is pretty cool! Hockey's a good game to watch." And maybe they will become the newest fans. That's obviously what the NHL is trying to do. Will they succeed? Lord knows, but it's a start if successful.
