The Penguins need an improvement and they need it now. Chris Osgood has been playing stellar, but he's hardly been challenged. 41 shots in two games? Come on, that's a little over the average goaltenders nightly workload. Challenge him and get to the net.

Easier said than done I suppose. Detroit does an excellent job of shutting down the lanes, blocking shots and controlling the neutral zone. So in reality, you can't make it to the net if you can't see the net.

While we're on the topic of Osgood, I'd just like to say that blogging for the Penguins has been a hobby, privilege and source of entertainment for the past year. I've seen/heard/had e-mails sent in regards to Crosby's diving, Malkin's slew-footing and Ruutu's 'questionable' play - but come on Osgood. If you can't take that little love tap from Sykora late in the third you shouldn't be playing hockey. You embellished against the Stars and now you're trying to tag a player in the box when you clearly have the win. Classless.

And hey, I'll be the first to admit that Roberts acted way out of line on that Franzen hit. While I don't doubt Franzen was seeing lil birdies over his head, the entire situation/hit was pointless. So I can dish it, take it and critique myself - that was uncalled for.

But let's get back to the topic at hand; Pittsburgh's inability to score. Is it Malkin trying to finesse, Crosby trying to drive or Gonchar's desire to slap from the point that is destroying this team's chances of scoring? Rather then play as a team it seems like the Pens are trying to do it as individuals. That isn't going to cut it in a Cup run.

When you really break it down, here is the solution to Pittsburgh's problems.

MORE SHOTS

12-3-4 in Game One, 6-6-10 in Game Two. A good majority are being blocked, a ton of passes are missing the mark and the close calls wither away in a quick Detroit rush down the other end. Detroit's transition game is incredible; Pittsburgh can't crash the D-men on offense and get back in time to stop a rush. And so we see Pittsburgh's forwards unable to control the puck in the zone, cycle around and get a shot off. Towards the end of the game - you know, where it didn't matter anymore; Pittsburgh was really starting to look like they were gelling. Swift passes, shots on goal and just this sign of control. It was the one thing that stood out as a sign of hope in Game 2. What didn't help was a statistic that said Detroit kept the Malkin line shot-less. Shot-less (obviously) means they were a scoreless line, something you hope to at least muster up from the second line

LESS PENALTIES

Just like how you can't take yourself off the power play with a penalty of your own, you can't give Detroit a PP chance when you're down by two and looking to at least make SOME sort of comeback. Game One was nothing compared to Monday's game, where Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts spent more time in the box than on the ice. Tally eight minutes for Malone, 14 for Roberts and a total of 46 for the team. Amazingly, despite EIGHT power-play attempts, Pittsburgh's PK units kept Detroit scoreless.

SHORTER SHIFTS

Guys are getting burned. Gill is doing what he can with his size in the slot, but outside of that he's getting schooled left and right. When you mention something about the defense breaking down (which was key in Game 1) you first have to factor in exhaustion. With Pittsburgh's inability to control the puck in Detroit's zone and their own inability to clear the zone, you have guys skating marathon-like shifts out there. The only time they can catch a breath is when Detroit celebrates a goal.

In the end, at least the Pens are heading back to Pitt for Game 3. Optimistic Pens fans would pray that Pitt gets their footing (skating?) back and heads back to Detroit in a 2-2 series tie.

Hey, I'm only the guy running this blog and writing this article, but it's as much your as it is mine.

What do you think Pittsburgh has to do to turn things around in Game 3? Is the change inward as mentioned, or should they consider looking at Detroit and doing something about that?

Your boys are starting to play dirty Frank. They can't score by skill so they're resorting to hitting the goalie. Also, taking potshots at Franzen's head (a player with a concussion history) is just plain classless.

I would say Osgoods swan dive after sticking his arm in front of Sykora (who we all know is just a low down dirty player) when he was up 3-0 late in the third was unnecessary and classless. But, Roberts' shot on Franzen was a real shatty thing to do.

Don't include that Osgood 'hit' - it was some of the finest acting i've seen in years. blah blah blah Crosby dives. Sure I've seen that too. But Osgood is just as classless as Roberts was, in obvious different degrees of the word.

So let me get this right Jut. When fans whine on and on about Crosby diving, and now Osgood blatantly dives and seriously embellishes another bump and I'm supposed to just keep quiet. Why? Are only Rangers and flyers fans allowed to call out the Pens. Is Crosby the only guy ever to be accused of embellishing a trip? Should I not complain about Osgood when he clearly put himself infront of Sykora and then realizing that he wasn't close enough then stuck his arm out to make sure there was contact? And to be perfectly honest, I think Franzen was doing a little acting after Roberts' little cheap shot. Don't get me wrong, I'm not sticking up for what Roberts did, but Franzen's little pierouette (I hope u can figure out what I was trying to spell) and then gracefull fall to the ice was a little hard to stomach. Fack on top of it all, the Pens are getting crushed. I'm just grumpy I think.

Jut - did you see the 'hit'? Come on now - everyone was calling him out on the Dallas game when I think Riberio gave him a nudge and he acted like he just got taken down by machine gun fire. Hypothetically speaking, if his team was down 2-1 with 2 minutes in the game and he did it to draw a penalty, I'd still call him a chump but I'd admire his ability to draw a penalty and get his team on the PP. But the fact is it was 3-0 with a little over a minute remaining and no signs of a threat in any aspect of the game. Osgood is like the girl on the playground that every guy on the Wings is standing up for if anyone even comes near him. There was no fierce contact, it was 110% embellished. If you read what I wrote I even mentioned I've received my fair share of Crosby hate mail over the course of this season, and I expected someone to take the 'Yeah well what about Crosby' approach. but come on, at least look at the play.

I just think its the pot calling the kettle black is all...

I just find it kinda funny that now you're all uppity about it, but when the pens got called out all season it was quiet

These things tend to even out...you guys just got caught on the wrong end of one...

It's not that I'm uppity about it. Fact is the Pens were guaranteed a loss at that point in the game. It was just unnecessary. If you're going to dive and try to draw a penalty, at least have it mean something. I.E. - down by a goal with two minutes remaining. Good time to try and draw the penalty.

I've been pulling for the Pens to make this a competitive series, and I hope they still do. I completely agree with the shorter shifts comment. There have been a couple of instances where Letang has flat out failed to make plays that I thought he was completely capable of, and without checking how long he was on the ice at the time I'm guessing that was a factor. I've been less than impressed with Malkin and Gill, though I wasn't expecting great things from Gill. And I really am waiting to see anything good out of Sykora out there, and I'm not referring to his penalty, just his overall play.

I think the real star of the series is babcock. He has his team playing as a TEAM for 60 minutes. His system has shut down the pens thus far. Let's see what they do back home.

Gill isn't going to put up points he's a shutdown guy. But the guy is just getting burned out there. His limbering steps are in a 1 for 3 ratio with that of any Red Wings player. Sykora is a finesse player who just can't get in the groove out there. Game 3 is crucial. At the least it will give the Pens hope, and at the worst it will provide the Red Wings with a potential sweep.

The falcon must supply input...

Kronwell is three inches and thirty pounds away from being one of the most deadly forces in the league. His open-ice hitting is amazing...

Jordan Stall missed a great opportunity in the second period when he flung his shot wide from right in front of the net...

Malkin isn't looking like much of a superstar. I retract any statements about his being more clutch than Crosby. Malkin hasn't shown any forms of being himself during these two games (or the last seven for that matter)...

Crosby is working more to set up his teammates with shots than actually taking the game upon his own stick. Then again, that is what makes him great...

More credit should go to the Red Wings' defense than to Osgood. He has only faced forty-one shots over these two games. As you said, that is less than some goalies face in single games. It isn't the Penguins offense struggling as it is them running into a hot defensive unit (I believe)...

Osgood did flop/dive near the end of the game. It was pathetic. You are totally right in saying that is classless. Especially with a large lead late in the game...

Thanks for pointing out the unnecessary shots on Franzen. Coming off a concussion, not a cool move by Roberts.

"Rather than play as a team it seems like the Pens are trying to do it as individuals." Great point! Couldn't have said it better...

Three good points on what the Penguins need to do to get back into this series...

I think am almost entirely positive Pittsburgh wins Game Three at home in the Mellon Arena. The fans will supply that extra boost of motivation and exhilleration to bring the Penguins a victory...

I had a great time with the open thread during last night's game. I can't wait to do it again...

Seriously, everyone check out Frank's site. It looks amazing, it has a lot of great stuff, and he put much work into it. So seriously, check it out, any hockey fan (casual or competitive) won't be sorry they gave the site a chance...

Anyway, great stuff once again Frank...

Am I alone in thinking that Kronwall needs to stay on his feet? He jumps into 98% of those devistating checks. I take nothing away from his ability to step up in the open ice and line up his foes, but I hate watching him jump into every check.

Your not alone. But, right now it is hard for me to distinguish my frustration from objectivity. It is my opinion that he leaves his feet on most of those checks also. How did he hit the taller Malone in the head with his shoulder? But, the league only seems to call those penalties on the Flyers. Detroit seems to get a pass. And while we are at it, I tend to agree with Therrien that Detroit is very good at obstructing. I must have screamed at my TV a thousand times about that. They have called 3 ticky tacky goalie interference calls this series, but only one regular interference call.

Thanks Falc, appreciate the input and the site boost. Look forward to seeing you around again tomorrow night.

Malkin is playing like last year's playoffs. He no doubt proved his value when Sid was out, but that old assumption he plays worse when Sid is around is starting to become evident. One shot in two games! It's like there are 4 other Sid's on the ice with him.

I think Roberts underestimated his position in the lineup Monday night. Yes he was a scratch for Game 1 (although healthy), but his goal should be leading by example. Go out and hustle, chase down pucks and most importantly stay out of the box. Granted that's his second home lately, but his veteran leadership has much more weight when supplied from the bench rather than the sin bin.

Anyways - the invite to Pensburgh.com is open to anyone interested in chatting about the game. The new auto-refresh option on the site makes it more into a chat room than a message board. Feel free to stop buy and check it out.

Good point Tej. Apparently he holds himself in very high regard for his..'style.' He considers himself one of the greatest hitters in the league and even studies YouTube videos of guys like Scott Stevens. But even that hit on Ruutu was about 2 inches away from being a Downie/McAmmond reenactment.
