Nintendo Wii Releasing “Wii Fit ” on May 19th.

Wii Fit - Wii what? As many of you know, Wii is the popular interactve Nintendo game console - well Wii Fit is the new fitness game in their Wii Sports collection that promises to get your body in tip-top shape.

Wii Fit has already sold over 1.8 million copies in Japan and the United States May 19 th launch is expected to share the same results. Last week the UK launched a successful Wii Fit Campaign ( Model / Fitness Athlete Nell McAndrew and girl singer Sarah Harding demonstrated Wii Fit at the launch) with sellout pre-orders of this interactive fitness game. Wii Fit is incorporated with the Balance Board accessory (a pad that players stand on during their exercises) which will have an estimated price point beginning at $89.99. The board is innovative in that it responds to both your balance and body weight.

The interactive fitness game begins with you checking your BMI (Body Mass Index Rate) and then test your balance to determine what your “Wii Fit Age” is. You can select from forty plus workout sessions such as challenging muscle conditionings, aerobics, boxing, running, snowboarding, yoga and even hula-hooping.

This game has the potential of getting your body ' super sexy bikini ready' (or bathing suit ready - for those chicks out there that prefer sexy one-pieces!) just in time for the summer. Perhaps even just get those legs toned so you even look even sexier in the latest styles of strappy stilettos

For busy hot moms or just hot chicks with hectic schedules, Wii Fit may just be the ticket for you to become the best glamour babe you can be! Grab your guy or your kids and get healthy and fit!

Sport Tidbits:

BMI or Body Mass Index is your number that is calculated from your height and weight. It an estimation of the percentage of your total weight that comes from fat and doesn’t include muscle, bone or organs. For example, the higher your BMI is, the higher the percentage of fat you have in your body. General rule of thumb for a good healthy weight is a BMI between 20 and 25.

So only women can buy this? Or guys that wear super sexy bikinis and strappy stilettos?

You're probably right, it's going to be mostly women who buy Wii Fit, but does this article have to be a glaring example of why so many women have issues with body image in this country? The only mention of anyone other than women is the last sentence, and even that has connotations of the stereotypical, happy American family.

Can we please stop thinking that every woman has to be physically perfect in order to be worthy of getting everything she wants?

Rant over.

I get what you're saying, Meg, but I don't think that everything that deals with fitness is about body image stereotypes. Anything that gets people up and active is a good thing, even if they are targeted mainly at women. Anything wrong with yoga or pilates, both of which are also aimed and the female demographic? Now, if they release Wii Binge and Purge then you would have something to rant about.

I understand what you're saying, too. Exercise is a fabulous thing. More people should get up and move, and this is a genius move on Nintendo's part. The name of the game is Wii Fit, though. It's not Wii Be a Sexy Woman. It just bothers me when something has phrases like "sexy," "hot chicks," "hot moms" and "glamour babe" are in bold print. Maybe I'm just being insecure and speaking to my own physical flaws, I don't know.

Gotcha--your concerns are more with the article not the product. My bad.

Hell, I'll probably buy the product. Hopefully Nintendo is marketing this differently.

I've seen a few TV ads and billboards recently--they focus on healthy lifestyle imagery--and include men and women in the ads.

You're going to have to elaborate more than that. Not accurate for what?

I'm 5'10, 195 pounds, my level of physical activity on a scale of 1-10 is about a 2.

Reggie Bush is 5'11, 200 pounds is a professional football player, on a scale of 1-10 his level of physical activity is about a 12.

Our BMI reading is identical.

There is your problem: BMI doesn't work for everybody, particularly athletes. But it does work for most people, particularly people with weight concerns, who it is typically applied to anyway. Just because it works for most people, but not everyone, doesn't make it a joke. If I question anything about BMI, it is that it doesn't really tell us anything that our eyes don't. But I suppose it is a nice way to put a number on it, which some people find important and which might spur someone to take action about their health.

As a licensed nutritionist who happens to have athletes among his clients, not only do I not use it, I don't know anyone in the field who does either.

It is not an accurate tool, there are many, many factors which go into weight and health management which BMI does not factor, such as genetics.

I don't find something which can promote bad nutrition or health habits to be a joke, by the way.

BMI was never intended to be applied to individuals. Any doctor, nutritionist or other health professional who does so is misusing the statistic, so I applaud you for not using it.

It's purpose is with population-based studies, and as such, it is used frequently. As an epidemiologist, my wife uses BMI quite often, but these are studies with tens of thousands of people.

As with anything else, tools have particular applications. Attempting to use BMI for other purposes it was not intended is the problem, not BMI itself.

This article is referring to a video game which will likely sell millions of copies, and specifically refers to the use of BMI to the individual, which the article is quite clear in pointing out.

I see no value to BMI in either a group study or in an individual setting, as everyone is different. If I take four 5'8" inch men, or four 5'4" women, they will each have a different ntritional program. I can't (by law, by the way) randomly put them all on the same program. What if one is diabetic? What if one has allergies? Conversely, when they go for their physical to determine their exercise level, that, too, should also be individually different.

If BMI was in fact designed as part of an epidemiologic study, then, yes, it has value. Anything less is not only professionally irresponsible, but morally as well.

Regarding the use of BMI in Wii Fit, I would agree. As I said before, it is properly used in very large population studies, which obviously is not the case with someone and their video game. My only point is that the statistic misapplied doesn't make the stat itself a joke.

Then maybe the descriptions of what BMI entails needs to be re-written. As is stands, factoring only height and weight to determine someone's health standing is a joke.

For an individual, yes, it would be a joke--that's why it is not meant to be used for that purpose. For a population-based study, where outliers like Reggie Bush are statistically insignificant, it works.

It's purpose is to use a quick and easy figure to find what the overall health of a population is. As such, it is a broad brush, and yes, somewhat crude, but applied to a population, it works.

If you were painting a room, would you use a roller or an artist's brush? You have to choose the right tool for the right job.

Well put, Tay. Food, diet and nutrition is one of the more compromised factors in society. Countless "foolproof" books and weight loss programs. (Only fools buy them). A complete and total disregard for a universal system designed to once and for all let the public know what in fact is good for you or not, and in what quantities. A universal food labeling system enabled by the government and not by the states themselves. I could go on and on, but the point is BMI, and Weightwatchers and BMI, among others, were all designed or written for one reason, and one only...to make money for someone, at the expense of the public.
