Wie to Participate in 8th PGA Tour Event

Michelle Wie, the 20-year old professional golfer and a member of the LPGA Tour, doesn’t deserve all the criticism she has received. Wie, who turned pro at age 16 in 2005, has yet to win an LPGA event, and has missed the cut in two majors.

Yes, it’s true that Wie hasn’t won a tournament in her professional career, and yes, she has accepted an invitation to play in her 8 th PGA tour event. Wie failed to make the cut in all seven of her previous attempts in the PGA Tour, and has been criticized by all for her poor performance. Her decision to play with the ‘boys’ has been questioned, as well.

Why can’t you blame Wie for all this? Well, first of all, she’s still very young. She hasn’t fully matured at the professional level yet. She obviously has talent. Back in the 2003 Nabisco Championship, Wie became the youngest player to make the cut in a LPGA major at age 13. That was not the only time Wie was the youngest in her sport. She became the youngest to qualify for a PGA Tour event in the 2004 Sony Open (age 14), the youngest to qualify for the Curtis Open in 2004, the youngest female to make a cut on the PGA Tour (2006, age 16), and even the youngest to make the cut on the Asian Tour (2006, age 16). The list goes on…

Clearly, Wie knows the game of golf, and has a passion for it. But not every golfer goes on to be the next Tiger Woods, who may be the richest, and most-known sports figure in today’s world. Give her some time to fully develop, and I think she’ll do just fine, maybe even win a few majors.

Why all the beef about the PGA Tour events? If you get an invitation to play the game you love at a higher level, and with more money at stake, wouldn’t you accept it? She is just attempting to elevate the women golfers to a new level, and prove that women can compete with men. I’m sure she doesn’t mind failing a few times in order to gain respect from the golf community. Just like what Danica Patrick, one of few women in the Stock Car world, did not long ago, Wie is attempting a feat that has yet to be accomplished. Reaching this goal of hers would, like I said, elevate the world of golf.

Her attempt, as expected, has been a failure so far, and has caused a lot of criticism. But in the end, this could pay high dividends to Michelle. I, for one, will be cheering her on when she tees off with the men, again. Is the eighth time the charm?

The Legends Reno-Tahoe Open (PGA Tour) will tee off today with Wie in the mix.

Chance of Wie making the cut; zero

Chance of Wie winning "a few majors" on the LPGA tour; less than zero

Chance of Wie ending up a laughingstock like John Daly; she already is.

She is so much worse than Daily its not even funny. She has managed to make all the wrong turns at every point in her career. Honestly I see her as being famous for the sake of being famous more than anything else. And that's just sad

I fear another Anna Kournikova might be on the cards. But, I can see her being solid on the LPGA Tour for twenty years, and she'll probably win a LPGA major somewhere along the way (they have 5 majors I think anyway, so she has more chance than a man would.

Sadly I think that ship has already sailed. She won't even have the career that Anna had, she was a great doubles player and had the modeling to fall back on. Wie doesn't have that. And even when she is in contention she manages to be distracted by outside influences

I used to defend Michelle Wie, but I jumped off that bandwagon a long time ago. She continues to make horrible decisions with her career. Before trying to elevate the world of golf by trying to compete with a men's event, she should PROVE HERSELF on the LPGA Tour first. Honestly, the people in her inner circle are using her for the almighty dollar. She probably still has great promise and great potential. But it is slowly fading away with each and every fatal decision. Lorena Ochoa, Paula Creamer, Annika Sorenstam have MUCH more of a right to try and do this.

But HAVE they tried?? The answer to that is no. I understand she hasn't proven herself yet, but why should the rest critisize her decision when they haven't gone out there and tried themselves. Give her a little credit, at least. She's taking many risks at attempting this, and if she succeeds it will make history. Not saying she will do it, but I don't think all the criticism is really needed. She is currently tied for 77th after the first round, btw.

Why is she playing in this event instead of the LPGA Major at Sunningdale? That's just daft.

She enjoys the spotlight and trying to be different. However, she forgot the whole you need to be good on the LPGA then go play with the men. She can't even hand her own people.

She wasn't eligible, Alex. She would have had to go to Europe and try and qualify, with no guarantees.

If she was legitimate, if she truly cared about golf and in supporting the LPGA, she would have gone. She obviously doesn't, which is why she chose to embarrass herself in Reno.

It's one thing to be a has-been, it's another thing to be a never-was.

Wasn't eligible?! That means she must be outside of the top 50 in the women's rankings. As for not trying to qualify, well, she's not forced to, but still a bit dopey.

If you've ever watched her press conferences, it's obvious she's not the brightest bulb on the x-mas tree. I believe every career descision is made by her parents and manager. She just shows up when and where she is told to and says scripted things when asked about any of it. The amount of money she's making for having been nothing more than a well known loser is absurd! What are Sony and Nike paying her for exactly? I'm confused as hell by this. I don't think she'll have ANY long term career. Her folks will get rich off of the novelty that she is and she will soon fade away. Stick a fork in her...she's done.
