Why is Jordan Getting a Free Pass?

One of, if not the, biggest drafting mess up in NBA history belongs to the Portland Trailblazers. They selected the 7′1 Sam Bowie out of Kentucky ahead of Michael Jordan. Ok, everyone knows that already. I find it a little tough to write about this because I am one of the biggest MJ fans imaginable. It is amazing to me how much crap gets thrown at Thomas and the job he is doing(or not doing) for the Knicks. I agree 100% that he should have been fired 3 years ago, however it got me thinking on why Jordan has went kind of under the radar with the job he has done as a GM. He has had a number one pick and a number 3 pick and he has Kywame Brown and Adam Morrison to show for it....here is a list of players he could have chosen:

Brandon Roy, Rudy Gay, Pau Gasol, Joe Johnson, Tony Parker, Zach Randolph, Tyson Chandler, Eddy Curry, Richard Jefferson, Jason Richardson, Gerrald Wallace

And there are plenty more that would have been a lot better choices. I know there are always busts in the draft and there are the surprise players but what good has he done a team.....the only positive he did in Washington was play and sell out every game. So far in Charlotte he has drafted Morrison and Dudley....He had a solid big guy with talent in Brandon Wright but then traded him for an aging Richardson. The Bobcats have young talent but that was in place before he got there and yet you never hear of his job being in jeopardy. I hope it never gets as bad as Thomas in NY because MJ is the greatest player ever but remember when Thomas was considered one of the best point guards ever.....its rarely even mentioned anymore.

Maybe because Michael Jordan isn't General Manager, he is the President of Basketball Operations and Minority Owner of the Bobcats. Much in the same position Larry Bird holds in Indiana and Magic Johnson holds in Los Angeles. Jordan oversees basketball decisions but he doesn't actually make basketball decisions, he just supervises those who do.

Not quite true. I don't know what has gone on lately in Charlotte, but Kwame was definitely a Jordan pick. As president of basketball operations, Jordan approves all these decisions, particularly the draft. Coach is right--Jordan's getting a pass. Now, if he were to go to a team like the Knicks, Lakers, Celtics, etc, he would probably get more notice. But because it's the Bobcats (and Wizards), no one really pays attention.

@ Taytay - your right about Jordan he approves draft decisions, he doesn't make them. He signs off on what his hired staff does so that he doesn't have to do the heavy lifting. If you're going to be critical of Jordan, be critical of the staff he hires, they do the work, sign the players and draft the talent. He signs checks, attends meetings and shakes hands with mucky mucks.

Again, I don't know how things have worked lately in Charlotte, but Jordan made the Kwame pick. That was his guy.

As for the staff he has assembled, you are correct. They deserve blame for any bad decisions made. But Jordan is the one who put them in that position, and is ultimately responsible for what they do.

I'll put it this way: I wouldn't want him to have any sort of front office position with my team.

most people don't realize it, but its not like the trailblazers didn't want jordan...its just that they needed a big guy...and they would have easily taken olajuwon if they had the chance...but that's how it rolls sometimes... so they took the next best and it turned out that bowie was just ridiculously injury prone more than anything else...if anything, he's more of a "what could have been, kinda guy"

The Blazers couldn't take Jordan because of how their roster was made up Trizz is right. However, when you end up passing on the greatest player of all-time people will have short memories. Also, no one gives the 49ers shit for passing on Joe Montana twice before taking him in Round 3. Not the same thing I'm just saying...

Take it from someone who actually saw Bowie play, including twice in person. He was a legitmate pick in that draft at #2. If he didn't have glass feet, he would have been one of the top three or four centers of all time. He could do it all, run the floor, pass, rebound on both sides, had a sweet 15-18 foot jumper that made shooting guards jealous, and was unstoppable in the paint. It was a great pick from a basketball standpoint.

From the Charlotte Bobcats official website:

MICHAEL JORDAN

Managing Member of Basketball Operations

An NBA legend who virtually rewrote the league’s record book, Michael Jordan joined the Charlotte Bobcats ownership group in June 2006 and will use his basketball expertise while serving as the team’s Managing Member of Basketball Operations

The managing member of Basketball Operations, in regular office terms that would be the Boss of the Guys who make the basketball decisions. I don't say this stuff for my health. He isn't the GM, the GM makes the final moves on roster and staff decisions.
