Why The Mets Can't Hang With The Phillies

While the Philadelphia Phillies moved into a tie with the Marlins for first place in the National League East, the New York Mets were having a team meeting to “clear the air.”

Reigning MVP Jimmy Rollins has spent a good chunk of the season as a spectator. Former MVP Ryan Howard has only started to hit in the last week or so to improve his batting average to a whopping .188, while his 60 strikeouts have caused an overly breezy spring in Philadelphia. Opening Day starter Brett Myers’ ERA (5.91) is among the worst in the league for a starting pitcher. However, with all of that being said, as of today, the Phillies are two games ahead of the Mets in the standings.

In Flushing (very appropriate), Omar Minaya has to publicly state that manager Willie Randolph’s job is safe. Willie Randolph has to publicly state that pitching coach Rick Peterson’s job is safe. Billy Wagner continues to rip his teammates. Jose Reyes continues to sulk. On the bright side, a statue has been erected on the field at Shea. Wait a minute… that’s Carlos Delgado. Oops.

Meanwhile, free agent signing Geoff Jenkins, who has one at-bat in the last week while the Phillies have faced a bunch of lefties, doesn’t complain. He’s frustrated, but he understands that his role is to face righties and the team is better with Jayson Werth (3 HR, 8 RBI last night) in the lineup against lefties. Pat Burrell wishes Charlie Manuel wouldn’t pull him for defense late in games as he plays for a new contract, but he doesn’t rock the boat. Even combustible Brett Myers is shockingly calm has he continues to struggle.

Will the Mets’ private team meeting solve their problems? Perhaps. But with some of the divas in that locker room, I have my doubts. The Phillies haven’t had problems like this in the locker room, not coincidentally, since Billy Wagner left. His mouth moves as fast as his upper-90’s heater. If he could only control his mouth like he controls his pitches, that team meeting may have been a lot shorter.

Feel free to claim that team chemistry is overrated, but look at the results on the field last year and this year. The Phillies are no more talented than the Mets. Charlie Manuel is not a better manager than Willie Randolph. But if that chemistry can will a team to a few extra wins, that could be the difference between a postseason appearance and a major disappointment. Just ask the 2007 Mets… and the 2008 Mets.

Team Chemistry is interesting

but whats a little more surprising is how this chemistry is working without Aaron Rowand who was arguably the leader of the team last year. Offensively the Phillies miss him slightly (injuries mostly) but in the club house i was sure they were going to

I was wrong...This team loves to play. Now if we could stop the boos of Ryan Howard that would be a little better

Absolutely. The one thing I love about the Phillies in '08 is that they are improving everything that they should have for this season. Their bullpen was horrendous, especially Tom Gordon. Now, Tom Gordon is doing exceptionally well.

Other guys like Pat Burrell and Jayson Werth have come up big too, which is exactly why the Phillies have a better record than they did to this day last year. They are 24-19 so far this season, and on May 17, 2007, they were 20-21; remember, J-Roll wasn't injured.

No wonder why the Phils are in second place (.002 behind the Marlins in winning percentage), even though J-Roll was injured for almost half of the Phils' games played so far.

One 2 run homer shy of becoming the first person to hit for the home run cycle. Did he ever have the opportunity to hit a 2 run homer that night?

There is a way Ryan Howard can stop the booing: get some hits. Strike out less. Simple.

It seems simple, but for Howard, it's not. He currently has 100 more strikeouts than games played. That's a LOT of strikeouts for the amount of games that he's played. And I'm sure Howard will come back. Everyone has their slumps. Look at David Ortiz. Look at Russell Martin. Look at Curtis Granderson. Look at Ryan Braun. It's perfectly normal...

I know I oversimplified things. But I keep hearing that Howard starts out slow. Well, it's 43 games in - 1/4 of the season now. I think 'slow' has to be changed to 'when are you planning on hitting the ball with some consistency?' I'm not asking for much - he's a former MVP not far removed from 58 homers. What happened? This team isn't good enough to overcome this kind of thing. If he's still limping along in September, it's not going to be pretty. I know I sound like a total pessimist when it comes to the Phils. But I am tired of getting my hopes up only to watch them fizzle out down the stretch. The playoffs was nice. I'd love to see them do more this year.

You are correct, Sj. Howard does start off slow. However, with a season quarter of the way over thi season, comparing to last season, he's actually doing okay. From the beginning of the 2007 season until the May 26th, 2007, Howard was batting exactly .200. He was then able to pull it up 56 points within a month. He got red hot in June and July (specifically), when he hit 20 of his 47 home runs.

Also, here are couple of stats thrown out comparing what he has done this season to the May 17th last season:

6 homers in '07, 9 in '08

23 RBI's in '07, 23 in '08

I guess even though he still has a lower batting average, OBP, SLG, and OPS, Howard still manages to drive in runs when needed, which is probably a minor reason why the Phils are doing so well right now, even though he's having a really bad season.

Romi, believe me - I'd be thrilled if Howard went nuts and had the sort of June/July he had last year. And I would not advocate the Phillies making any change on this front. I want to see Howard in a Phils uni for the next decade. I do believe that Howard will catch fire and make me forget all this drivel I'm spouting now. I hope he turns it on soon!

And, of course, the dream scenario is that Utley keeps being Utley, Howard goes nuts and Burrell continues to chase that free agent contract. If these three guys hit like they all can...and there are complimentary hitters like Werth, Rollins and Victorino...wow. But they need for Myers to step it up. Or move him back to the 'pen and see if any farm guys can pitch.

Everyone said the same thing last year. I'm telling AGM this mainly because it reminds me of what happened with David Ortiz last year and this year. Everyone was telling me, "What's wrong with Ortiz?" And I said, "Like everyone else in baseball, he's going through a slump." And look what happened to Ortiz after that horrific couple of weeks he had in April last season: he had a career high in batting average (.332). Even the best players in baseball go through slumps. Even though Howard's is a lot longer than Papi's last season, Howard will do well by the end of the season. He's got the talent. Maybe he needs a couple of days off.

I truly think the best idea is to move Brett Myers to the bullpen (for a middle reliever in case of an early blowout by a different starter). He's allowed too many runs to score, and hits just keep flying by when he's on the mound. Now, don't put him in anywhere NEAR Gordon or Lidge. They're perfect right now, and Manuel should keep it that way.

The season is way too early to start writing the Mets off when it comes to where they'll finish in the standings. It's only mid-May. Every team has its issues with ups and downs. For the Mets' case, it's better to be now at this stage of the year than in September. The Phillies have much to prove that their 2007 finish was no fluke and that they can still win with their pitching staff. Yes, their chemistry has been under a microscope of late, but I think judging the Mets' fortunes can ultimately be made after both Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez return from injury. For my own personal interest, I hope both the Mets AND Phillies make the playoffs this year.

I think that PPS's assessment is interesting, but I agree with CHF that it's too early to write off the Mets. After all, don't the Mets lead the season series 4 games to 2 thus far? And the Phillies have yet to play the Marlins. That should tell us where the Phils stand.

I'd heard it mentioned on tonight's Phillies broadcast. Just checked the box score...he's 0 for 3. Three K's. Sigh. Feast or famine with him right now. Nobody's hitting tonight.

A two-game difference in the standings in May is irrelevant. Last year at this time, the Yankees were down 11 games or so, and they still managed to make the playoffs. Get back to me in August.

Despite the Mets being 21-19, there is still a sense that the Mets are a very fragile team. They must go on a winning streak and soon or they will keep on being streaky and lose ground in the NL East.

I think the point of this article is that the Mets are even with (slightly better than) the Phillies, at least talent-wise, and that the Phillies' clubhouse chemistry, when contrasted with the Mets' apparently tense and divided team, will give them the edge they need to win the NL East.
