Who Should Sign Terrell Owens?

Obviously you have all heard that T.O. was released by the Dallas Cowboys today. After weeks of avoiding the topic and giving mostly unbelievable comments about the situation Jerry Jones decided to take the 9 million cap hit and cut the cancer.

But the question now is... where should he go? Who should sign the (self proclaimed) best receiver? Obviously the Cowboys, 49ers, and Eagles are not going to consider it. At least one would hope the 9ers and Iggles wouldn't. So that leaves 29 teams. Let's take a look and see who will end up with him. I think you can eliminate the Dolphins, Vikings, and Ravens based on the coaches were either in Philly when T.O. blew up or with him in Dallas. I am sure there are other teams there too but those three are definite no's. Let's also eliminate the Giants, Redskins, Jets, Bills, Browns, Texans, Jaguars, Broncos, Raiders, Bears, Packers, Lions, Bucs, Falcons, Seahawks, and Rams. There is no way the quarterback on those teams could handle T.O. That leaves 10 teams. Now let's eliminate Pittsburgh. I really don't see the Steelers risking their chemistry for T.O. Next are the Carolina Panthers. Steve Smith surely doesn't want him there and they have bigger problems to worry about. The Colts are an interesting thought though. I think they could use him and I think Peyton could control him but I really don't think Peyton would allow them to sign him. So that leaves us with 7 teams that might make a play at him. The Patriots, Bengals, Titans, Chargers, Chiefs, Saints, and Cardinals. Let's examine those possibilities a little more:

Patriots They might be excited to have Owens on one side with Randy Moss on the other and Wes Welker in the slot. The passing game would be UNBELIEVABLE. And if they can get him for say one year... it might be possible. He can behave for a season. But the risk is can he get along with Moss? Rumor has it that they don't really care for each other and surely each thinks they are good enough to win a Super Bowl without the other. I say... a distinct possibility.

Bengals They are probably not interested since the just signed Laveranues Coles, but they were (and maybe still are) looking for a big time WR after letting Housh leave via free agency. You put him, Ocho Cinco, and Coles on the field and you have a very solid receiving group. But will he be too much for Carson Palmer to handle? And can Marvin Lewis control him at all? I doubt it but I wouldn't put it past him. I say... not likely.

Titans Here is a team that could absolutely use a big time receiver. They have had NO options at the position since Derrick Mason left a few years ago. TO would obviously bring that back to the team and the offense. But does Kerry Collins want him there? And would Vince Young be interested in throwing too him? If Simms is the future you surely don't want T.O. Plus Jeff Fisher probably isn't going to take the risk on him if he hasn't brought in a great receiver before this. I say... very doubtful.

Chargers Another team that really needs a big receiver. And Philip Rivers MIGHT have the personality to handle T.O. for a while. He would get plenty of catches cause there is no other option on the team. It would help L.T. too cause teams couldn't focus on him too. But like the Titans reason above... why hasn't San Diego gotten a guy like Housh? The only other problem would be Norv Turner....can he handle an ego like T.O.'s? Not sure. But it might be worth the risk. I say... a good possibility.

Chiefs This team might be the perfect fit for him. You have a guy like Tony Gonzalez who is the leader and would stand up in the locker room against him. And you have Todd Haley who proved in the playoffs that he has no problem getting in the face of a player. It would give Matt Cassel another option other than Dwayne Bowe, Anthony Gonzalez, and L.J. would get some more space to run. With an upgrade or two on defense they could win the West with TO. Would he be too much for Cassel? He doesn't seem like a strong personality type and TO might run him out. But then again, Pioli did bring in Moss for the Pats, so maybe he would do this too. I say... very possible.

Saints There are reasons this makes sense. Sean Payton can surely contain T.O. and he doesn't have a problem with locker room cancers, see Jeremy Shockey. Drew Brees is the undeniable leader on this offense and T.O. would be aware of that from the get go. Lining T.O. up with Marques Colston is an interesting proposition too. But this team needs defensive help not offensive help. And I doubt that Brees would be interested in throwing to T.O. if the team consulted him. Colston is a very similar receiver and I think bringing in T.O. would hurt his development. I say... intriguing but not likely.

Cardinals Assuming they trade Anquan Boldin they might be interested. Kurt Warner is possibly tough enough to handle T.O. and Fitz is on the other side to draw the coverage. But the coaching staff seems to be building a Steelers like mentality and I doubt they would risk that for a locker room cancer like TO. Plus the team is possibly trading Boldin, who is very similar to TO. If you don't want to keep Boldin would you really want TO? Doubt it. I say... nope.

So who is it gonna be???? Well I think it will be either the Pats, Chiefs, or Chargers signing the one, the only TO. If I were a betting man, which I am most certainly not (usually), I would say... Chiefs. Who do you think will sign him???

About Moss and Owens - you said "surely each thinks they are good enough to win a Super Bowl without the other" - may I kindly remind you NEITHER has won a Super Bowl without each other? Nice breakdown. But you forgot ONE important element about T.O. - Drew Rosenhaus. There's as few teams that want to deal with him as Owens.

The premise of this article is wrong. It assumes that Owens is still an elite, big time receiver.

I read elsewhere on the tubes that over the last season there have been changes to his game. In addition to his obvious drops and an inability to get the yardage needed in crucial situations, it turns out that he has been unable to separate from press coverage. The Cowboys countered by putting him in motion and, when that stopped working, lining him up behind Crayton. Note that he supposedly outweighs Crayton by 20 lbs. Yet Owens needs Crayton to open up the coverage for him? Sad.

Does anybody watch the Cowboys on a regular basis? I would appreciate the confirmation of the changes in how the Cowboys utilized him.

I think Terrell Owens is a stel for almost any team that has a QB willing to go vertical. It'd have been a nice thought to put him and Drew Brees on the same team. Brees has made a rep of being a quarteback willing to air it out and who wouldn't a deep threat reciever. I'm sure the age factor is puttling him out of the running with a lot of teams. While I think the Colts could use him, their cap issues put them out, especially if they were willing to release future Hall of Famer and city/team/Peyton Manning beloved reciever, Marvin Harrison (a sad day for this Colts fan). I don't think the Redskins would take him, not out of not wanting him, but the $ they've already invested in their free agency (Haynesworth's $100+ million deal). T.O. should not expect to get the #1 reciever money that he's looking for. A team with the air it out style is going to look at him the same as most of the armchair analyists (like myself...except they don't have armchairs in Iraq...I know I've looked for them...but I digress). They look at him as a 13 yr vetera, possibly near the end of the line. He's going to have to prove himself to those teams that have their waivering interests in him. He's going to have to swallow his pride a bit and realize the he's the role model reciever when he finds a place to play. He won't get much more than a 1 yr shot from team to team, if he doesn't kill his attitude tha he's the whole game. His needs for the passes are going to have to be backseated and realize that he's a guy that will draw the attenion, due to his size and aging but fast wheels. He won't get every pass thown to him by a smarter QB, because of that threat he is. If there was any advice to T.O. that I could give and have him read, it'd be this. The show that you've starred in has nearly run it's course. You've got less years in front of you that you have behind you. You've been classicly known as T.O the whiner, T.O. the drama king, T.O. the flake, T.O. the terrible, or just a troblemake. It's tome to help usher in the new crowd that has watched you since they were kids and dremed of being the big shot that you were. I'm sure that you never liked any of those listed mantras that go with your name. I'd be happier to see you go out as T.O. the leader, T.O. the teacher, and finally T.O. the great.

Well put, dude. With the experience he has, it's time that the spotlight should no longer be on him, and have him focus on a better game in terms of making the team win rather than making himself better. He should be a leader, as he is a 13 year vet, like you said. I think he's still got a couple of years left in him... as long as he doesn't let the fact that the spotlight has to be on him all the time and all that drama affect him. If you read this comment, SIGN UP! You make sense. ;)

Apparently the Buffalo Bills still think he is an elite WR. Either that, or they are desperate for a playmaker on the team, but I think you get that in Lee Evans (who is extremely underrated, thanks to the team he plays for). Yes, Evans' numbers have gone down over the past couple of years, but wait until Edwards really starts throwing the ball.

I think that this move by the Bills organization was a risky one with the possiblity of being a double edged sword. T.O. can be helpful in many factors where thy need stregnth, most obviously in their recieving corp. Adding a reciever like him, with his size, talent and experience, will help their young QB, J.P. Lossman, in that he can bring in a pass that my have been a bit errant. An experienced reciever like oftentimes is the greatest training tool for a quarteback entering into the NFL to learn how to throw better, more accurate passes. Another factor is his impact on Buffalo's scary run game. Though it does have it's flaws, Marshawn Lynch is one of the smartest, most patient backs to hit the new generation. If Lossman can learn to sell the play-action with a threat like T.O., Temas will bite on the pass an open up the run game, and the same is true in the reversed role. Marhawn Lynch's improvement will happen and when people bite on the run, T.O and the rest of the recieving corp may have a little more fluidity to go out there and catch the ball. I do know that he's going to have to get over his problems when a devense goes into a zone press. The Patriots being in the same division have a nasty rep for imposing themselves on opposing reciever. Bill Bellichek will exploit that. Now to the downsides of this deal in Buffalo. Terrel Owens is the star name in this orgaization. Though there are a few up and comers and a pretty good degree of talent, Owens' name is marquis. He has the experience and unless he's made a complete personality turn around, he'll try and dominate the limelight of this young team. He may get bitter if they get into a rythym where Lynch and the run game (I wait to see if the NFL will take any actions on his recent legal problems) and negelcts Owens' ball hog mentality. Everyone knows that when T.O. isn't happy, he can go ito a slump that shouldn't hit recievers of his talent. I hope, for the Bills sake that they utilize him as I've described and try and steer him away from his typical T.O.-ness when times get rough for an oganization needing a leader to get them to the dance (playoffs) mcuh less the big show (Super Bowl)
