When a Dunk is Not a Dunk

Am I the only one who saw that Dwight Howard's Superman dunk was not a dunk? Clearly he threw the ball through the rim. Why don't the judges get the benefit of seeing an instant replay before scoring it. Not that the dunk contest is that big a deal, but clearly something has to be done.

Is it just me or has some of the luster on Dwyane Wade worn off. He's at his lowest scoring output since his rookie season. The biggest reason seems to be that he is getting to the free throw line less then he has in the past. I know that he has little help, reminds me of Paul Pierce in Boston the last few years, but have some of his injuries robbed him of some of his explosiveness? Will he return to being the player he was 2 years ago?

Finalists for the hall of fame were announced friday. Of those waiting for enshrinement I would say that Pat Riley and Hakeem Olajuwon are easy choices. Dennis Johnson and Patrick Ewing are on the cusp but probably just over the line. Ewing was all NBA 1st team only once and was the 3rd or 4th best center in the game for most of his playing career. Hakeem, Shaq, and David Robinson arguably were better players. His finesse game was never what I envisioned he'd be after watching him at Georgetown.  Instead of a monster defensive presence he had that borderline travel move in the lane that became his pet shot. New York only seemed to be a threat to win the title when Jordan left for baseball. In the finals against Houston, Hakeem outplayed Ewing and took home the title. So I see his eventual enshrinement as an accumulation of HRs, RBI's, and runs scored on good but not great teams if you get my analogy.

Phoenix is just about the worst rebounding team in basketball and acquired Shaq to be that inside scoring and rebounding presence that they have sorely missed for sometime. The only problem is that Shaq Fu's rebounding rate and ability to block shots has fallen to almost pedestrian levels in the past couple of years. It will be interesting to see if Shaq can get healthy enough and change his game to a more defensive oriented one.

Yes, yes indeed - the slam dunk contest was anything but legitimate and law and order must be established to curtail actual imagination, especially from Dwight Howard. I suggest writing your Congressperson.

I thought the fact that he threw the ball in was ridiculous...

Plus after that first dunk, could he really be stopped?!?!

Gerald Green didn't have anything on him...by the final round, unless green literally shit a ball out above the rim and then proceeded to dunk it, he had no shot...

Agreed. It was not a dunk, but the fact that he was high enough up in the air to throw it down as hard as he did adn get it into the hoop was actually more impressive.

The judges knew it was over anyway. Dwight Howard is the man, and they were still impressed by the first dunk, so they just gave it to him. Regardless, Howard became the tallest person to win the contest since Larry Nance, and I love the fact that he represented the big man and won it all.

Well he tried to do that last year adn was robbed. But he brought the showmanship back to the contest. Jordan, Neke, Dr. J were orignials. But there the Richardsons, Carter's Bryant's and Rider's were showmen and found ways to bring hype to the contest. Howard did that.

I liked the birthday cake dunk but it wasn't near enough last night. Dwight Howard was far and away the top dog last night. The Superman dunk was incredible. I know it wasn't a "dunk" but think about it, he actually THREW the ball DOWN through the hoop. That has to count for somethin.

THROW it DOOOOOOWN, Big Man!!!

Sorry, that WAS a dunk! It wasn't a layup!!! To throw it through the hoop at that velocity from as far away as he was? SICK!!! If you throw trash in a wastebasket and don't touch the rim of the basket, YOU still call it a dunk? Yes, you do...

Howard could have won with any of his dunks. The behind the backboard was disgusting too!!! Any dunk I can't do or never could do is a great dunk. Howard took the dunk contest to a new place last night...

I was thinking... how far HAVE we come? Brent Barry's warmup jacket dunk, Dee Brown's Reebok Pumps, Ced Ceballos' blindfold -we've come a long way!!!

But I'm so tempted to try the cupcake dunk later today!!!

That was indeed a dunk. Kenny Smith explained it best it was the fact of how high he was and the velocity with which he threw it down. Besides if you look at the replay in slow mo it looks like he still could've grabbed the rim if he wanted to. But isn't that how Superman would dunk?! Would he hang on the rim like a mere mortal? No he would cast the ball down like it was a space meteor or something. That said the birthday dunk was sweet. Nobody thought he could actually blow it out without making a mess.

I actually think if he had grabbed onto the rim, he would have hurt himself because he was going so fast, and he threw it so hard, that the sudden jolt and stop to his momentum could have been bad.

But, can he do the dunks that some guy named Michael in a movie did once?

You remember watching that Carter dunk Falcon? I remember saying to myself: Okay, what did he just do? Holy shat he's hanging from his forearm in the rim! That's insane! Same with the first time Vince put it throw his legs and or when Jason Richardson did the self-ally-opp reserve-through-the-legs reserve rim baseline dunk.

For the first time since 2000 I can say I was thoroughly entertained by the dunk contest. Starting last year, I think everyone finally realized that dunks involving just a guy, a hoop and a ball have all been done. Good for Howard and Green breaking the cycle and having some fun with it....and the self-tap off the glass was the underrated dunk of the night.

Dwight Howard put on the most unbelieveable display in the history of the slam dunk contest. It was thoroughly enjoyable. Gerald Green should have a 50 with that birthday cake dunk, that was tremondous! This slam dunk contest was going stale the past few years because mainly guys were trying to emulate the dunks of the past with a little extra flavor. Howard revolutionized the slam dunk contest with his creativity. And about the Superman, for him to get high enough to throw the ball through the net is enough for me!! But the most amazing dunk to me was the self-tap dunk!!! Another point: The fact that a major star won this contest is huge: Maybe this will encourage the Lebrons, Mcgradys and other big stars to get involved.

Disclaimer: I missed all All-Star activities this weekend.

As I join late again.

I guess the question is, How do you define a dunk?

Years ago, it was considered by the NBA players that the best dunk was one in which they didn't touch anything. Not only did they slam the ball down hard in such a way that it only touched the net, but then they got their hand clear and they didn't touch anything either.

I think a real hard dunk where you don't smash the rim is more impressive. It demonstrates control. I'm 270 and I can rock the rim no problem - shaking the backboard doesn't make a dunk more fierce.

The thing no one is giving Howard credit for (his biggest advantage) is his hands.

Yeah he can leap, but catching and controlling the ball is the most importantr part of the dunks. His hands are huge and fast. THAT is where he is simply amazing.

A lot of guys can jump like Howard but it's the other stuff - creativity, energy, his hands, co-ordination - that sets him far apart.
