What if...Seattle Sonics edition

Inspired by another fun Simmons' read, here is a serious of questions with a Seattle Sonics theme:

  • What if Michael Jordan did not come back in 1996 when the SuperSonics won the West?
  • What if the #8 Denver Nuggets did not upset the #1 Seattle Sonics in 1994? What if the #7 Lakers did not upset #2 Seattle Sonics in 1995? The Sonics were 8-0 against the Houston Rockets in their two championship seasons. Of course, those were also the only two years of the decade in which Michael Jordan was out of the league.
  • What if Seattle did not trade Scottie Pippen to Chicago for Olden Polynice?
  • What if Wally Walker never existed?
  • What if he showed Shawn Kemp the money instead of Jim McIlvaine?
  • What if George Karl was never fired?
  • What if Nate McMillan was never let go?
  • What if Bob Weiss and Bob Hill never happened?
  • What if Kevin Durant teamed with Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen?
  • What if Allen makes that three to force a Game 7 against the eventual champion San Antonio Spurs in 2005?
  • What if Seattle did not draft Mo Sene, Johan Petro, and Robert Swift three years in a row? What if Seattle drafted guys who went later, like Paul Millsap, David Lee, and Al Jefferson?
  • What if Seattle never traded away Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp, Dale Ellis, Lenny Wilkens, Jack Sikma, Spencer Haywood, Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis, Dennis Johnson, Vin Baker, Scottie Pippen, Bobby Jackson, Corey Maggette, Mikki Moore, Desmond Mason, Patrick Ewing, and Detlef Schrempf?
  • What if the Sonics were never sold to Howard Schultz or Clay Bennett?

The world will never know.

Pippen was nothing without Jordan, as for a lot of the rest especially the "never traded away" part...this article could be about the Montreal Expos.

I agree with JUT. Pippen was still a superstar and the Sonics could have used that.

Would you like to answer any of these questions? Otherwise this is just like sitting around with my old roommate Varaham who would ask stuff like: "What if Lebron feel on the court right now and died of a heart attack? What would you say?"

Tim McCarver:

Then Buckner would have fielded the ground ball and got the out at first base...

Then the Red Sox would've had a better shot at winning...

Then the Mets would've won the division...

What if Buckner had caught the ball...

Go watch the replay, you honestly think Bob Stanley beats Mookie to the bag?

And, you facktard Red Sox, you blew 2-0, 3-2 and 5-3 leads in Games six and a 3-0 lead in game seven, explain how this is any of this Buckner's fault!!??

Little leaving Martinez in was the right thing to do, maybe if Damon was playing a little shallower he would have caught Posada's blooper, ya think?

now wait a second...i'm not here to argue the merits of the bush presidency and politics, but as a student of history lets get a few things straight:

1) Bush was elected by all terms of measurement in 2004 (52% of the pop vote i believe)

2) You can argue the merits and demerits of the electoral college system, but he was also elected in 2000...that being said, the electoral college was designed by the founding fathers on purpose...they knew what the hell they were doing...

3) you can certainly argue the conspiracy theories of ohio and florida, but at this point it will accomplish little than filling space...(how's about focusing on 2008)

the popular vote would mean that people who live in iowa or washington or Delaware would lose any type of power they might have do you really want only californians, new yorkers and to some extent Pennsylvanians picking your president every 4 years?

i figured someone would mentioned that TB...but you do realize that the history of the matter is that Bush won the presidential election... And while we should learn from past mistakes (i.e. an effective form of tabulating votes and/or voting itself), there is no rational reason to simply be bitter about the past such that you do not realize that the future is the only thing you can control

it would be better then the governor of a state (who just happens to be one of their brothers) making the decision. And I live in Washington, and last I checked we voted for Gore and Kerry, electoral and popular.

"californians, new yorkers and to some extent Pennsylvanians"

They already more or less do.

Follow the moneytrain that funds this monstrous campaign war chests.

"there is no rational reason to simply be bitter about the past such that you do not realize that the future is the only thing you can control"

Go tell that to a mom and dad that lost their kid serving this nation in the Persian Gulf.

Sorry JuT, but we will have to agree to disagree. There is NO friggin' way millions of Americans will forget what has happened to this country in the past 8 years.

Now... Back to sports!

matt...don't mean to burst your bubble, but in general terms the popular vote of a state determines their electoral voting (albeit, the electorates could vote an alternate way)

and without getting into specifics, states like the bible belt already have casted their votes...much like new england...so its the battlegrounds that just appear to have meaning...

but my point is (and i do stand by this) that we cannot focus on how much we disagree with the current administration, but focus on how to take steps forward...

My political response, yes to those parents (some of whom i know personally) would be that...

alright, we'll let it go at that...

and yeah, there's a lot of work to do...

I love this piece. The one I have an issue with is:

What if Kevin Durant teamed with Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen?

I don't think it would have worked. It would have been fun, but it would have been tough to get them all on the court at the same time.

I do not think it could have worked either, especially in this ridiculously competitive western conference. Still does not prevent Sonic fans from wondering though. I suppose if you had to choose a year to rebuild, this would be the one seeing as it would be so hard to do well against so many good teams.
