Was game six rigged in 2002? 82games finds out

The most infamous game of the past 25 years - and maybe ever in the NBA - was played a little over six years ago and prompted allegations that it was rigged by the NBA; even Ralph Nader called for an inquiry (he's gotta keep himself busy between doomed election campaigns, one assumes).

It was game six of the 2002 Western Finals between the Lakers and the Kings. Most remembered for the Lakers 40 free throws and Kobe hitting Mike Bibby with an elbow and Bibby getting the foul.

And it's divided people unlike any other game in the history of the NBA. Mike Wilbon of the Washington Post called it the worst officiated game he had ever seen. Bill Simmons called it the most disturbing subplot of the postseason: "from an officiating standpoint, the most one-sided game of the past decade".

This past post-season, when Tim Donaghy said that this game was determined by company men, it took on a life of it's own.

But now Roland Beech, the founder of 82games.com, has broken the game down, call by call by call, in excruciating detail. And he's found out the game may may have been unduly effected by the officiating. It's a long read but it's worth it.

One unaddressed point, though: as Bill Simmons pointed out in 2002, Dick Bavetta was also involved in several other controversial games: 1999, Knicks-Pacers, Game 3, 1999, Knicks-Pacers, Game 6, 1999, Spurs-Knicks, Game 3, 2000, Knicks-Heat, Game 7, 2000, Lakers-Blazers, Game 7, 2002, Celtics-Nets, Game 4.

Now, if only 82games.com could break down some other games and settle some other debates, for once and for all.

Its a great point...though I'm not fond of the 82games.com advertising (And I'll just assume you don't work there....heh)

Problem is, you site Bill Simmons twice...I just can't believe a guy's who sports credentials consist of a constant love fest for the sox and celtics, yet the one team that struggles, he leaves...

cop-out if you ask me

I know take with a grain of salt everything Stern has touched since he took office. He no longer gets, or deserves, the benefit of the doubt. From the 1983 lottery, to the orchestration of Jordan to the Bulls, right up to the Suns/Spurs series last year and the subsequent "outing" of Donaghy, I've become eternally pessimistic when it comes to the NBA.

There's never been any doubt in my mind. Some of the Chicago Bulls stuff in the mid-1990s looked pretty rigged too. The NBA has smelled funny for about 15 years now. David Stern has made the NBA just tons of money. But he's been terrible for the quality of the league and the game itself.

False Prophet's New Sports Schedule:

September - March 1: Football

November - July 1: Hockey

June - Draft Hype (NFL)

End of July - NHL Draft

July - NFL 7 on 7 man football, light contact (Like the pro bowl, but with more arena-style rules)

August - NFL/NHL Pre season.

College sports can keep the same schedule (Hockey's already virtually the entire school year, and I'd be disapointed if I couldn't watch Nebraska and Maryland play in the Police Departments of America Bowl over christmas)

NBA needs to have it's playoffs weeknights in march (all basketball, all week long, only on CBS). I don't care what else happens with them

MLB - keep the summer gig. When there's nothing else to do, you're good relief.

Here's mine:

January 1-December 24: MLB December 25: Presents December 26-December 31: MLB

There is no real offseason for major sports anymore. Just a couple months where there are no games.

Timl, yours is lame, it makes baseball relevant all year. That's the NFL's job.

You're right, I love watching NFL Live in March and hearing about how Chad Johnson's forgotten to take his medication again. ;)

I actually love NFL live in the offseason. It's the only way to get a good look at what's happening in the NFL in march. And besides, I'd rather hear how Ocho Cinco being Ocho Cinco is going to impact the Bengals than hear how teams should be looking ahead to 2009 when it's July 1

I can't blame you. Baseball's season is very long in comparison to other sports. Of course, we can both have what we want. There's room for both NFL and MLB all year round. Isn't there?

sure. Except the fact that it's gonna make every northern state get some sort of roof, or else have to learn to play baseball in the snow, or just move all the games to southern states

It'll probably be the second one, because, as you know, the Twins' new stadium will not have a roof on it.

Wow i did not realize the NFL was only about a month away! No offense to baseball fans but this is huge. Kels you really dont have to complain because someone has a countdown to football season, maybe they just arent baseball fans... thats how it works for some people. If you want to have a countdown to baseball season all thru the offseason I have no problem with that but dont complain if someone is counting down to there favorite sport starting.

We can go on all day about whether the game was rigged or not, Only God knows. We do know this: The NBA had a chance to address this way back when and failed. The profits and the ratings were too good, so they decided to play a nice little game of PYA. {Business majors know what that acronym means} Now it has come back to haunt them big time.
