The Philadelphia Flyers are set to kick off the 2008-09 NHL season Saturday October 11 at the Wachovia Center.  The fierce rivalry of the Flyers and New York Rangers is a great way to kick off the season.  I for one cannot wait to see the red, white, and blue (not the US of A) get their asses handed to them, taste the ice, and be slammed between a rock and the boards.  It's not that I have anything against the Rockettes, I just believe that watching a team that shouldn't even exist get the crap beat out of them is a brilliant form of fun...

Moving on from the smack and getting down to some preview notes.  Claude Giroux is a name few know now, but wait until the end of the season.  The rookie is going to be given every chance to make the opening night roster.  There is no reason he won't be seeing his name listed on the line chart come October.  He is a speedy skater with a great sense and feel for the game.  He is young and still somewhat raw, but boy is he a talent.  I can't wait to see if he can carry his high level of junior play over to the bigs.  We are looking at a rookie of the year candidate come next spring...

With Jason Smith out of the picture, the Flyers currently stand without a team captain.  That is until tomorrow.  The Philadelphia Daily News reports that the 23 year old star of the Flyers Mike Richards will become the new captain of the team headed forward.  Players Kimmo Timonen and Simon Gagne were the others being considered of the job.  Timonen has experience as he was Nashville's captain in the 2006-07 season.  Gagne missed time last year due to injury...

The Flyers will open camp this season without two key members of last year's team.  R.J. Umberger was moved in a trade during the off-season and Derian Hatcher who is battling a career threatening knee injury.  With turmoil comes promise.  Hatcher and Umberger may be gone but Gagne and Giroux will join the team this season.  Gagne's lack of presence was obvious last season as the Flyers struggle at times to score goals.  Giroux will add to the young core of players the Flyers are building up.  Keep an eye out for star center Jeff Carter as this speedster is poised for a huge year.  Also, Daniel Briere is a guy to keep an eye on.  One of the highest paid players in the league, he disappeared at times last year.  Some more consistency out of Danny will help this young team return to the conference finals again this season...

I made it short. This way you might all take the time to read it and not just glance it over...

I always say that good readers don't read articles because of the quantity, but because of the quality. Although short, this is still a good article. I can't wait to read what else you have to write about the Flyers.

Daniel Briere is "One of the highest players in the league"?

He'd be an average high in the NBA though, right?

That was a fun typo!

No, seriously, good stuff...for a retired guy.

Philadelphia have limited chance of winning their division thanks to Messrs Crosby and Malkin, but they should make the playoffs.

I personally am not even high on Crosby, sure he's good, but I think Staal and Malkin are better And OVechkin is better ;)

Ovechkin's a better scorer for sure... but Crosby is a better hockey player than either Staal or Malkin

You forget that the Flyers were the best team in the league for a long time last season. They dropped off at the end before picking it up again. With Gagne back, the Flyers could should take the division...

You didn't really just say Staal and Malkin are better than Crosby did you?

Even I know that Crosby is better than Staal and Malkin. And I'm just starting to pay attention to hockey.

Crosby is a great player and he is better than Staal and Malkin. Problem arises when you bring Zetteberg into the equation. Is he not the best player in the league right now?

IDK Apos. If you look back at the 80's and 90's, there were lots of superstars on cup winning teams. The problem is, those superstars where not named Mario (or that other guy). Would you have said Messier was better than Gretzky or Mario in 94?

The big question is, who will the Flyers' cheap shots injure this year?

Not really, when a player unintentionally injures another, it's part of the game. When the Flyers wait for an opponent to turn his back then unload on him, it's cheap... and kind of queer.

Just tell the Flyers to not do that stuff against Montreal, or to do so with protection. Because when the Habs turn their back and bend over, they want to get "hit."

And thank you to the NHL for balancing the schedule so we see less of Montreal. It was becoming an interesting rivalry, the NHL had to intercede so we could play the Lightning more often.

I guess that is the downside of the scheduling this year. But, the league needs to promote it's stars. You also get the chance to see all the teams from the west. A lot of people were getting sick of seeing the division teams 8 times a year. I love watching the Pens and Flyers play, but it gets old after about the 6th time they play.

Nice to see Richards getting his dues. He is quickly becoming one of the top talents in the game. How do you feel about the Umberger trade falc, or Jut. As a Pens fan I am glad to see him go cause he was a Penguin killer. If they were gonna unload some cash for the cap, I would have traded Briere.

Question 2 I don't think a Briere trade is/was possible...too much cash for a player that isn't that good...

If Briere is consistant this season, he should earn some of that money. Isn't he a better player on the wing than as a center?

Nice article, Falcon. So you think the Rangers are the Rockettes, huh? BITE ME! LOL, just kidding. Really, I enjoyed your article. I'm not surprised that Mike Richards is the new captain for the Flyers. You'd think with that huge contract he signed last season, he'd be their next captain.

Whatever the case may be, I cannot wait until opening night. I'm not 100% sure yet, but may do a recap of the summer and quick preview of the Rangers' upcoming season. Thank God hockey is right around the corner. Two days from now, the first preseason game for New York.
