BigPPup
AGM Linebacker and I will bring the pain.

I'm a sports fanatic. I hail from Nelson County Virginia, and thats where I learned to be a Virginia Cavalier fan. I also learned to be a Dallas Cowboys fan because I hated how good the Redskins were doing. I've played sports at almost every level with the exception of being a fulltime professional, as a result I have a great perception on the sporting world. I love to talk sports and I've never been shy to share my opinion with someone.

Walker's Olympic Rants

The Olympics are here and everyone is the States is getting U.S.A. patriotic emotions.  Well most people are.  Lost in the Olympic craze is kickoff of the NFL Preseason.  ESPN is in full swing with their crap hype machine.  More importantly Walker’s Rants are back, and in an unusually bad mood…

I watched the 100 M-Relay last night, and I just don’t care.  Call me Un-American…

Anyone who gets up in arms over trash talk at a swim meet needs to get a life…

I hate the Olympics because they bring out sudo sports fans who want to talk to me like they have a clue about a sport they watch once ever 4 years…

The Olympics actually make me enjoy and appreciate the NFL Preseason…

We are so busy waving our little Michael Phelps flags that we simply ignore the now 3 wars taking place just few 1000 miles away from the games.  Glad to see our president on top of things…

It is complete BS that Rugby 7’s is not an Olympic event, there’s some serious crap to watch at these games, and 7’s would be a vast improvement…

Damn; I never knew I was so anti-Olympics…

If Goodell does not reinstate Adam Jones, there should be serious conversations about replacing him…

The Red Sox and the Yankees will miss the post season, and I cannot be happier…

If both those teams miss the post season does ESPN cease to exist? Or do they run a 100 part series between now and next season examining what went wrong?

Who would have thought Padraig Harrington would be the Tiger replacement?

Joe Torre needs to worry about managing his team and not what his player’s hair looks like…

Kyle Busch is not getting the respect he deserves.  I don’t like the guy but this season is just special…

I don’t give a flying ef that Favre fumbled a snap at practice.  That happens all the time when you get a new QB and center exchange and Brett had the same center for like 10 years…

L.A. the home to all injured QB’s…

One helluva season for the D.C. Slayers wish we could have pulled out that last playoff game…

It's fine if you don't care about the 4x100 relay. To each his own. It doesn't make you un-American, it just means you don't find swimming as exciting as football or rugby.

That being said, you must have been in a flippin' coma. Because that race was unreal.

The Olympics is so much more than a sporting event. Everyone who watches isn't necessarily a sports fan, but they want to see people from their country do well.

Who's going to overtake the Sox or Yanks for the Wildcard? Minnesota? Sorry, not happening...

It was a good race and fun to watch, but not going to treat it like its the greatest sporting event to ever take place like many outlets are. In the grand scheme of things it doesnt crack the top 25 all time sports moments ive seen. Not sure it cracks the top 10 list for this summer alone.

I rather enjoy the Olympics but am not afraid to admit that I have no clue on many of the events. NBC's coverage does grate on me. I kept yelling at the TV commentators while watching the 100m relay "Shut the feck up!" And that green line has to go, blech.

Luckily Mrs Gunny and the Gunnette were all fast asleep and my rantings did not awaken them.

The only player with a career winning record head to head vs. Tiger, minimum five pairings?

Padraig Harrington.

The fact he's from Ireland and talks like he just inhaled a pound of helium is why no one knows him. Golfers and golf fans know who he is, and he's got game.

Your rants today reflect your bad mood, P.

Harrington doesn't play much in Europe either, he spends most of his time by playing very minor events. That's why his world ranking never reflected his true ability until now. He's a vital part of the European Ryder Cup team in September though.

Let me start out by saying, I like the Olympics (DON'T HURT ME!). It's always fun to see countries go at each other in physical competitions. Sometimes, you have to overlook all the hoopla in order to enjoy these games. Granted, commercialism has put a HUGE dent in these games, but it's the same way in other aspects of our life. It sucks balls, but we have to overlook the bullshit sometimes.

I like the Olympics, because we get to see sports which don't usually form part of our usual sporting diet. For instance, I've never been so nervous about a Women's Team Archery Semi Final. Or even Judo. It's amazing how many sports which get no exposure, such as Sailing, that Great Britain are actually #1 in the world at.

BigPPup, sadly Rugby 7s can't be in the Olympics. You'd need 4 continents, and 75 countries in order to "qualify" for the Games, and while it has the continents (Europe, Oceania, Africa, South America, North America), I think they don't have enough countries. Rugby Union would struggle to get to 75, let alone the Sevens. That said, I think there is a campaign to get it into London 2012, even if it's an unofficial demonstration event. Twickenham won't be being used for the Games, so it would be an ideal destination.

I think cuesports should be in the Olympics, personally. 9-ball Pool is hugely popular globally, and snooker could sneak in through the back door! You can have individual and team events - I think it would work quite well (the individual snooker event could perhaps be a ranking event). This probably won't happen, since cuesport does not have a governing body which covers all of the variations.

I know there are also constant negotiations from other sports to make the Olympics, squash (racketball as you call it) is the highest profile sport trying. It's in the Commonwealth Games, and many people around the world feel the IOC should let them in.

No you are right Alex, they are working to get it as a spectator event. They actually played Rugby 7's in the commonwealth games. I think they could reach the 75 country mark. Any country playing 15's can play 7's. I'm not even a 7's fan but I think it would be a great fit in the olympics much in the way beach volleyball is. The IRB tour does very well. I actually dont like 15's as an Olympic sport because I fear it would end up being too much like Soccer. What I mean is, there are so many international tourneys already that the Olympics would be at the bottom of the list. I cant see the Kiwi's, Aussie's or SA passing up the Tri-Nations to play in the Olympics.

You're right, Rugby 7s is always in the Commonwealth Games, but that works well because England, Scotland, Wales etc. are split up. We'd have to form a united Great Britain team, which would reduce the countries. It wouldn't be too impossible, because we have a British Lions Union team already. Rugby 15s should never be an Olympic sport, because it won't fit in the two weeks. And then you get the Great Britain problem again, reducing the countries. 7s can be done in a weekend though, so I see it as the #1 choice of non Olympic sports to get in.

Original DDub, I kinda agree with you on your take about the Olympics. It's a mass marketing machine banking on the illusion of "patriotic pride". They try to make these games seem more important than they are because of the smack-us-in-the-face political slant. These games were invented/rehashed specifically to BYPASS the political slant and to JUST PLAY GAMES.

No one - and I mean 'NO ONE except the participants and their families' - cares about these sports in this form at all until the theme music gets cued. And like you, I find it INCREDIBLY annoying overhearing conversations on the streets from people who know it all now and will forget EVERYTHING they saw in a matter of weeks or months.

In fact, sometime between Halloween and Thanksgiving you should hold an Olympics Trivia Test and I bet 98% of all the people yapping about it now will fail the test then... PROVING how pointless and unimportant the hype really is.

But do I enjoy watching them? Sure. It has nothing to do with being American - because whether a fellow American wins or loses impacts my life exactly this amount - None. I love watching sporting events. I love to observe things - especially COMPETITION. I don't care who wins as long as someone does (and it's not the Red Sox or Patriots). I watch fishing shows, drag racing and skeet shooting on TV. I watch poker tourneys, game shows and even America's Next Top Model just to see who wins. I watch the Scrabble Tournament too, so it's not saying much. I'd watch a two people have a race to fall asleep if you let me bet on it...

Anyway, there's lots of sports that SHOULD be Olympic sports that aren't, rugby included. Meanwhile, I'll go back to watching ribbon twirlers, heptatheletes and synchronized swimmers...

The Olympic Games really is just a homage to our Greek ancestors, who coined the idea. They were invented in Shropshire, England, in the 1850s, and Pierre de Coubertain (sp?) came up with extending it to modern sport. It's one of those events that may not be our #1 choice of viewing, but it's good that it still exists. I sense that if somebody tried to start them up again in the modern day, the idea wouldn't get off the ground. As for watching pointless things, I watched a chess tournament for the last two weeks on the Internet. Beat that!

I know what you're getting at Meg, but what I meant was the world played basketball for years and had their own leagues and players etc. Remember the USA lost to the Soviets in 72. The USA had to bring in ringers just to get those blow out scores in 1992 Softball is an American sport and it has very little presence overseas and so the teams just aren't competitive.

Chess should be in the Olympics! Whether you think it a sport or not, the IOC recognises it as such. It has over 100 countries, on about 6 continents. It could have individual and team events too... Okay Russia would probably win both events, but you would get a lot of countries taking part. It probably wouldn't be the most spectator-friendly event, as each round would last all day, but from a competition perspective it would work. At least Manny would watch!

Interestingly, chess does have its own Olympics, I've discovered, called the Olympiad. They're just not held during the Olympic Games. As far as the IOC (and Sport England) are concerned, chess is a sport. They consider it a mental sport though, which is an interesting concept.
