Vladimir Klitschko Much Better Than Muhammad Ali

I really love boxing. This was huge sport in Soviet Union. My friend from army was name Yuri. We both went to army together as young boys to be trained as infantry. Because our schooling was in mechanics, we were spared ground duty in Afghanastan.  Instead we spent long hours on base in very hot weather working on ground vehicles. Many hours we spent talking about sports and our favorites were always boxing. Olympic boxing was so much better during days of Soviet Union compared to now. Then, they fought hard and well. Today, too much padding around head and no more knockouts. Best matchups were always against Americans. Almost always, Soviet Union won but not all the time. Gold medal in boxing always mean becoming huge hero in Soviet Union. Klitschko and Ali have many similarities. Both were considered best of their time. Both win gold medals in Olympics. And both are huge heros in their countries. Klitschko has many homes all over but he will always be Soviet Union to me. His father was important man in army but I did not know him. Klitschko is much taller than Ali and that gives him big advantage over the smaller Ali. Klitschko also much smarter and would find a way to beat Ali. Ali was not that smart. Unlike Klitschko, he never got doctor degree. Ali did not even pass army test and then refused to go into army because of Vietnam. I don't agree with not fighting for your country. In Soviet Union, this is act of traitor. People just didn't do this. They go to work camp and never seen again. Yuri hated army but I didn't mind because I was doing my best for Soviet Union. Klitschko is in military family and I like that very much. This makes man stronger in ring. Ali boxed much to long. His last fight was big news in Soviet Union because he was nearly killed. Now he is sick and old. I liked very much how Ali used to talk but it is sad to listen to him now. Even though I did not agree with Ali on war, I understood his big fear of fighting. Not all men can fight in army. I must make it clear that I did not fight in Afghanastan. I had a weapon but never fired it. Instead I worked on cars and trucks for soldiers. I always did my best because they were brave and needed my best work to fight against enemy. It is funny to me that Americans used to hate Soviet Union for fighting in Afghanastan. Huge misunderstanding. Taliban was never freedom fighters like Americans wanted to believe back than. Now America understands that they were terrorists but it is sadly to late. Soviet Union was never fooled by terrorists like United States was at that time. If two countries worked together instead of cold war, maybe no more terrorists today. We will never know but it is what I think. I remember Yuri telling me that Americans were also in Afghanastan helping our enemy but I never saw any so I did not believe him. Instead we talk about boxing because we did not want to fight over politics that we had no control over anyways. We were different in thinking but best of friends. I don't understand why Vladimir changed his name to Wladimir to sound more German. And he fights to much in Germany. Either fight in America for more money or go and fight in Russia to make people very happy. And maybe also in Ukraine which used to be Soviet Union. I think Klitschko could beat Ali in boxing match but I know for sure he would destroy Ali if he was trained during days of Soviet Union. He is perfect in every way. American media don't give him enough respect because he is from old Soviet Union and not United States. If Klitschko was from USA he would be a big hero here. Everybody would love him. This is hard time for me right now. Yuri died from illness in Afghanastan many years ago. No, he was not shot or killed. Just got sick in lungs infection and died in hospital. I promised him to take his wife Olga and young boy Nicolai to United States because he wanted better life for his family. I never wanted to go but my friend needed me to do this. I had no family. So when Gorbachaev allowed us to leave, we did. I never forgot Yuri dreams. Later, Olga marry man fro m Poland and they have children. I moved around a bit and became mechanic again. I also married to a American woman and now have daughter and son. Together we watch Klitschko fight whenever possible. I can not always afford HBO but do the best I can.  Life is funny sometimes. You do things that you never thought possible. Yuri died 28 years ago on next Monday. I miss him. He would have loved to watch Klitschko become world champion in boxing. It was his dream. Have a nice weekend everyone. Maybe I write tomorrow if I have time.

What kind of Soviet happy fool are you? My God, Ali was the Greatest! And always will be! Klitschko? That great white hope would not have lasted a round against Ali. And by the way, Ali was courageous for refusing to enter the draft. Hell even Corrie Sanders knocked out Klitschko. Don't let political rhetoric blind you from the truth!

I understand our "comrade" being totally clueless because he wasn't born here, but for someone who was to say Ali was overrated is a facking joke. Mike Tyson is overrated, Larry Holmes is overrated, if anything, Ali is underrated.

You are a fool. Klitchko would have made easy work of that loud mouth negro. The term great WHite hope applies to people who are not Champs. The Klitchko brothers are the heavyweight champs of the world. The term great black hope now applies, and there have been mountains of great black hopes that Klitchko has utterly destroyed. Later fool.

Ali was overrated, there's little question about that. He slipped around people, got a lot of help from Don King, lost at least two fights each to Frazier and Norton, plus Young and the huge embarrasing loss to Leon Spinks, who was like 6-0. He almost got KO'd by 185-pound Henry Cooper.

That said, he was a phenomenal boxer: long arms, great speed, on his toes he was about 6'6, good power for a 220-pounder, very tough, great mental tactics. Certainly one of the best ever. To consider Klitschko vs. Ali, two fights help. Ali vs. Foreman and Lewis vs. Klitschko. Foreman had size and power too, though Klitschko would fight Ali smarter than he did. Lewis cut Vitali badly, and Ali would too. Probably worse.

Ali never fought a guy like Klitschko, who was a real package of size and skills when healthy. But he would likely beat the Ukrainian on cuts, and could take Klitschko's punch long enough to win. Just my opinion.

Ali was not underrated. C'mon. How often did he loaf on the ropes and clinch while opponents did the work? The guy's a hell of a saleman, I'll give you that. Buffaloed a lot of people. Tyson was not overrated. He was used. He's a huge symbol for the sport. Ali was built up into a superhero, Tyson the super villain. BS in both directions.

That's not being a salesman, that's called strategy. He knew Foreman would have killed him if he stood toe to toe with him, so he forced Foreman to punch himself out. He knew from the first Norton fight he had trouble with his unorthodox style, he just developed a way around it. He knew that Frazier had a great jaw and could punch with both hands, why risk getting knocked out when he could move around and pick his spots? After all, isn't that why the sport is called boxing?

Where's the great black hope? All four heavyweight belts are held by WHite fighters. You wouldn't even hear about ALi if he was fighting today.

granted i don't follow boxing much anymore but does anyone dispute the competition that Ali faced, Frazier, Foreman etc was better then the guys Klitschko is facing?

To essentially call Ali a traitor or a hero for not fighting in the vietnam war is a vast oversimplification of the issues. From racism to religion to international politics there were alot of things going on there. things that would take this forum down a route it does not need to go.

Especially since it has nothing to do with his skills as a boxer.

Kel, he didn't force Foreman to do anything. Foreman was ahead by eight points after four rounds. He could have waited for Ali to come take his belt after that. He got bad advice. You should check out " When We Were Kings ", and see the shabby way Foreman was treated for that bout. You'd never know he was the champ.

As for getting around Norton, who chased him and pounded him round after round, that was Don King, not Ali. His title was a sham by that point. No one was allowed to beat him.

Dre-Lo, don't laugh off Klitschko that hard. Ali never fought anyone like him. Ali could not KO him, and Klitschko always kept coming. Ask Lennox Lewis.

Do we dare even compare the competition that Ali faced to what Klitschko has to face today in a sport that's dying a slow death. And Perhaps Ali wouldn't have knocked him out, but it would have been one-sided.

Kel, Klitschko sucks? Be real. He pounded Lewis all over the ring. Did Lewis suck too? Did the guy actually ever lose a fight? He was six rounds ahead of Byrd, a good heavy, in his first loss due to injury. He had Foreman's power with more range and skill. He stands up well against many all-time greats. No, he did not fight 1970s-level competition. But he didn't lose twice to Frazier and Norton plus Jimmy Young and Leon Spinks and have Don King rig his fights for him either. Dre is right. It's a dead division. The Klitschkoes have dominated it this decade. Don't blame the competition. Larry Holmes fought a lot of second-tier guys too. Give the guy his fair credit. He would chase Ali, too. Ali would have to respect his reach and power.

To answer you question, yeah, Lewis sucked too. And yeah, his competition sucked as well. Being undefeated against a bunch of stiffs is far from being impressive. And to say Lewis was better than Foreman is almost as funny as Klitschko being better than Ali.

This fight is stupid. Anyone who knows boxing already accepts that Ali was number one. Everyone else is a distant number two. Comparing Klitschko to Ali is as comparable as ranting that Anna Kournikova is better than Martina Navratilova.

Sonny Liston was heavyweight champ, he fought (and beat) legitimate fighters, including Patterson.

He was a drug addict, he was in the mob's pocket, he was a wife beating adulterer, he was a tax cheat, and probably a number of other things.

He was not, however, a tomato can.
