USA Swimming: Phelps is Phive for Phive

Baltimore’s own swimming sensation Michael Phelps is five for five in his quest to surpass Mark Spitz and win eight gold medals. After winning two races last night, he now has eleven career gold medals—the most out of any Olympian…ever.

As if winning the 200 butterfly in world record time isn’t hard enough, Phelps did it for a seventh time last night…and he did it blind.

During the 2-fly, Phelps’ goggles began to leak. From personal experience, this is the most anxiety-inducing experience that can happen to a swimmer during a race save losing your suit. It’s like trying to run with beer goggles on. And sight is everything in swimming. Swimmers, especially butterfliers and breaststrokers, need to use their depth perception to time their strokes for a proper turn so they don’t glide into the wall or get jammed on the wall. In other words, it’s nearly impossible to do an Olympic-quality turn with water in your goggles.

Phelps usually explodes out of his last wall in the 200 fly, and that didn’t happen yesterday. He began his turn a little early, resulting in a much less powerful final turn than normal. I thought it was kinda funny when he finished the race. He looked up at the scoreboard, saw that he had another gold medal and another world record, and he was unhappy. Only in Phelps’ world is that result a failure…

In the 4x200 freestyle relay, Phelps led the team off with a split that was almost three seconds ahead of world record pace. The team of Phelps, Lochte, Berens, and Vanderkaay shattered the world record by about five seconds and became the first team to break the 7:00 mark in the race.

When these Olympics are over, the questions and comparisons will begin. Phelps is inarguably the greatest Olympian of all-time, but is he the best athlete of all time?

I’m not sure I’m ready to address that question, but he certainly belongs in the discussion. I’m just not ready to compare him to Tiger, Mays, Babe, Brown, or Federer…not until his career is over. But looking ahead, he has at least one more great Olympic performance left in 2012, possibly another in 2016 (he’s only 23 years old).

Think about this: when it’s all said and done, Michael Phelps could have more than 20 gold medals. If that’s the case, I think he would become the best athlete we’ve ever seen. Maybe I’m biased because he’s from Baltimore…or he’s a swimmer…but people don’t get 20 gold medals. That just doesn’t happen. But, as we’ve seen so far during these Olympics, Phelps has a way of making the impossible become just the opposite.

Another point to think about: the program Phelps is swimming. He has to swim 17 races against world-class athletes in nine days.

That’s SO much to ask from your body. Mind you that during every one of their swims, swimmers push their bodies to the point of almost passing out. Swimming is the only sport where you have to hold your breath when your body needs more oxygen; and when you’re desperate for air coming into the last wall of a 200 breaststroke, holding your breath for 15 more yards is some of the worst pain in the world. It’s like sprinting all the way around a baseball diamond without breathing. Especially when you take the anaerobic nature of swimming into account, it will take incredible stamina and athleticism for Phelps continue to swim at this clip.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, Phelps' biggest hurdle will be the 100m butterfly, where he has to take on teammate and world record holder Ian Crocker. Crocker claimed the silver medal at the 2004 Athens games in the same event. The final this year takes place this coming Saturday. It’s the only event Phelps has that day, so he should be focused.

The only question will be his stamina level, as he must swim the 200 IM final and the 100 fly semifinal on Friday. Phelps will have to expend all of his energy in both races and may be more fatigued than Crocker on Saturday.

But I think Phelps will win the 100m fly because Phelps has had Crocker's number lately. He has posted three swims in that event that are faster than anything Crocker has done over the past year.

After his career is over, we will all have to take a long hard look at Phelps and possibly consider him as the best athlete in the history of sports.

One of the Russian swimmers said that Phelps was "from another planet." I think we can all agree on that...it just so happens that his spaceship landed in Rogers Forge.

Best athlete in the history of sports?!?!?! Cool your jets...he is a phenomenal athlete and an otherworldly swimmer. Best swimmer ever, best Olympian ever, and so on and so forth.

I think I've gotten into this discussion with people before...if you're talking about "athlete" in the context of someone who participates in a sport, or if you're talking about sheer athleticism, like Bo Jackson type stuff.

If you're talking about the first case, then we'll see how he does in 2012 and world championships, if he can continue to be as dominant. I think he's entered and surpassed Tiger and Roger territory as far as that goes. But THE best athlete ever? Among the best, maybe, but THE best?

I think there's more local pride in this article than common sense - which is fine. Brag about it all you want... it doesn't make you a decent swimmer. =)

If swimming (minus diving, synchronized and water polo events) is the "best sport", then maybe?

It's a narrow field of specific events - maybe there's someone out there that could tread water longer, hold their breath underwater longer or do the doggy paddle faster? Until we can broaden the term "sport" a little more, let's just call him a great swimmer/great Olympian/World record holder...

Just keep in mind - in a perfect world there'd be some athletes that had far more medals than they ended with... There's a LOT of swimming events - if there was as many styles of hurdling events as swimming Edwin Moses would have had 20 medals easy. If it weren't for boycotts, the 4 year wait for the next games, freek injuries, opportunities or MONEY there'd be some athletes you never heard of with double digit medals, for instance.

It's all relative...if you ask him, http://www.u...imming_N.htm he'll tell you he's not much of an "athlete" at all]. Stick Tiger Woods on a football field, stick Roger Federer on a basketball court and who knows what happens?

I wish we could just appreciate athletes in the context of which they are great, and not question their merits when it comes to something they have no control over.

Michael Phelps. Best swimmer ever. The end.

I'm kinda with Manny on this one. If other sports had as many events as swimming then they too would have numerous gold medals. How many pro sports does Phelps participate in along with his swimming. Phelps is by far the most dominant swimmer and possibly the most dominant olympian. I wont name him greatest athlete until he hits a double, steals a base, rushes for a touchdown, throws a touchdown, gets a double double and then goes on to win gold medals. Look at the diversity of Thorpe's events in the olympics, it makes Phelps look like a one trick pony.

Do you mean like winning the gold medal in the Pentathalon and Decathalon in the same year. He won 8 out of 15 contests in those two events in 1912. Not to mention in the same year he played in the first ever baseball exibition/demonstration game in the olympics.

Backstroke and Breastroke complete the IM. Also, the breaking of world records is slightly less impressive due to some rule changes. You were never allowed to flip turn on the backstroke before, and now you can. He's still miles ahead of the field, and mind blowingly impressive, he's just not a clear cut above all other types of athletes at this time.

Babe won more Olympic medals (3-2) but only because Babe was DENIED the opportunity to qualify for more than 3 events.

She started her own pro sports league (LPGA) after playing against men (she only missed the cut of a PGA event one time, her first attempt - when she had only been playing golf but for less than three years!)

She also played baseball, was an excellent roller skater (a big deal in those days) and was a remarkable bowler!!!

And she was a mere 5'5" tall...

Thorpe was good at all he did but he was never truly EXCELLENT in any of them for long. Zaharias DOMINATED the field in every sport she attempted. Maybe Jim Thorpe was "the male Babe Zaharias"...

Why is there an argument over who is best athlete here? Phelps IS right now and probably WILL be!

As to comparing to other sports, Phelps is doing this accross the board, ALL events except individual breast events. Bet if hey trained for them, he'd win those TOO! It would be similar to tracks decathlete only. Play football in all 32 stadiums and rush for 100 yds each, ya rite! No sport is equal to swimming as to use of the human body. Every muscle, every bone, and every vein is being stressed at this level of competition. When a NASCAR driver holds his breath that long its when he ties his shoes! The training at this level does not compare to any Spring Training or driving range to prepare to set World Records! AND no need for time machine as his world record breaking swims line him up with the past greats as FASTER!

Micheal Phelps is proving that hard work, good character, and a DRIVE TO BE THE BEST can make you the GREASTEST OLYMPIAN and ATHLETE!

Not to take anything away from Phelps, but the events in a decathlon are much more diverse (notice I didn't say harder) than the swimming events Phelps has won. And you only get one medal for winning a decathlon.

And I don't get the "play football in all 32 stadiums and rush for 100 yards each." I just don't understand the sentence.

I'm glad for Phelps, because he busted his tail, worked hard and is being rewarded. But like my dad told me when I started having those feelings about girls, "If you want to be the greatest of all-time you're gonna have to go for more than four minutes and three seconds." We were really close when I was growing up.

Who ever put Babe Z ahead of Jim Thorpe either doesn't much about Jim or very little about both of them. As Olympics go, Thorpe's medals will stand head and shoulders above anyone, including Phelps. What he did in both those events the Deca and Penta make 8 golds look like a walk in the Park. 17 Swims in 10 days is something very special and like everyone has been writing something we may never see again. But Thorpe's wins considering the time and distances and events are way over the edge. No one has even tried to do both in a long time. And like Phelps, Thorpe won big dominating almost every event he was in. No question in anyone's mind what Phelps has been able to do is on the edge of unbelievable, and like all of us I loved any minute and saw every minute of it. But the individuals that think his medals surpass Thorpe, please go into the record books and look what Jim Thorpe did in all his events and compare them with Phelps. Maybe the two greatest individuals in Olympic history bar none.......

i think its retarded that ppl talk about how spitz didnt use goggles or he had more hair when he swam and that it makes him a better/greater swimmer. If the arguement was talking about Phelps's times vs. Spitz's TIMES then it would be a factor to include but it doesnt change the fact the Phelp's has outdone his competition moreso than Spitz did in his time. The amount of hair the swimmers had is all in comparison to their time periods. It's not like Spitz was the only one with a mustache while all the other swimmers around him had shaved.
