UCLA to Fans: Leave Wooden Alone

UCLA was to right to bar fans from seeking Wooden's autograph.
UCLA was to right to bar fans from seeking Wooden's autograph.

Apparently UCLA officials want all fans that attend Bruin basketball games at Pauley Pavilion to let the 97-year-old John Wooden watch basketball uninterrupted. Spokesman Marc Dellins announced on Wednesday that fans won't be allowed to continuously walk up to the former coach during games and ask for autographs.

UCLA Coach Ben Howland strongly favored the decision, saying, “I think it’s long overdue. When Coach Wooden comes to a game, it would be nice if people respected the fact he’s there to enjoy the game and not just sign autographs."

“Here’s a living legend and it’s something he’s done for years and years. I suggested this a year or two ago. He’s got to have a little more protection. He’d be there all day just doing that because he’s so great. He hardly says no to anybody.”

It was a much needed decision by UCLA, especially since Wooden always finds it difficult to turn down request. While most fans are pleasant and patient, it is fairly common to see a line of 10 or 15 lined up in the narrow aisle at Pauley waiting for an autograph. Every person, Wooden included, has the right to watch a basketball game and not be disturbed by autograph seekers. There is nothing wrong for seeking Wooden's John Hancock but it would be more fitting to have him sign at an autograph session.

Maybe, and given that fact that wooden is such a nice character, they could have one (or a few) john wooden sessions...

The wizard of Westwood is, afterall, a 97 year old man...i'm sure his hands aren't what they used to be...

or he could just keep a stack of 8 by 10s in a bag with him and just hand them out...heh

Good grief people have some class. The man is just trying to watch the game he loves. Let him have some peace and enjoy the game. I applaud UCLA for taking care of him.

I'm glad UCLA is doing something about this. Not only does Wooden get annoyed, but everyone in the seats around him must get perturbed when some kid is blocking their view of the court.

If it was only "some kid". It's usually an adult or one of the students. Either way the many is nearly 100 years old he deserves to sit like a King in a bulletproof box courtside.

Well I don't know how they do things at UCLA, or where Wooden sits, but on the floor for BC games, we keep it very tight. Nobody without a floor ticket is ever allowed to get on the floor. And there is NO standing in the floor sections except at half-time.

Here's what UCLA should do. During each home game, there should be an autograph session with not only Wooden but other Bruin greats before the game, say about 2 to 2 1/2 hours before tip. That way, no one gets slighted, Coach gets his privacy and everyone goes away happy. It does get bothersome for the people around you when someone is blocking your view, which is why Rawbeezeitz got the check.

but Cougar, Wooden doesn't attend each home game. That's why he gets so much attention, because him coming to a game now is a 5 time a year thing. But the idea for the games he does attend sounds pretty practical.

97-year olds are not likely to come to a game 2 or 2 1/2 ahead of time. They don't have that much stamina.
