U.S. Olympic basketball team eyes gold

I was certainly one who was skeptical that this team, minus Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan inside, had the depth and team ethic to win against countries with more entrenched rosters and programs. But, to date, the USA has gotten it done with an excellent trapping defense that creates turnovers and breakaway baskets. There are still tougher opponents to play, but the USA has to be rated the favorite for gold in Beijing at this point.

The biggest surprise has to be Dwyane Wade, who has completely healed from injuries and is scoring in transition well. LeBron James has played a lot of power forward on a U.S. team built for speed. Using James that way allows the USA to utilize three smaller/quicker players for their tough backcourt defense. The potential issues inside where Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh are the only real bigs has been nullified because most opponents have not been attacking in post play. The USA has won the rebounding battle in each game so far, with most opponents chucking three balls as the bulk of their offense. Missed threes then start fast-break baskets for the U.S.

It's not over yet, and they are still very beatable. But these guys have come to play. They are the team every other country has to beat right now to even consider gold.

the opponents are not attacking the post for several reasons.

1) ball pressure makes it tough to get entry passes and the US has been applying great pressure.

2) dwight howard and chris bosh despite being the only real big men are playing very well defensively. and most importantly

3) the international game doesn't focus on post play. With different rules such as the smaller lane, the closer three point line, the ability to play zone etc its easier to focus on a post player. additionally most foreign teams try to play inside out where they drive to the hole and kick out for threes. Colangelo and Coach K knew this when they put the team together.

As long as they stay motivated, don't get cocky and don't miss toooo many three's or FT's they will win gold.

This is an example of Mike D'Antoni's style of basketball being executed by an entire roster. The Suns only had Amare as the only big man when they were doing it this way...

Ibearg, um, the lane is bigger and post play is MORE important in International ball. USA has just pushed the defensive focus to the backcourt to deny entry and disturb the rythym of that flow. Credit Deron Williams, Jason Kidd and Chris Paul for being supremely more talented than the rest of the world's ballhandlers.

Manny you are correct that the lane is bigger. However I think that further supports my point that traditional post players, ala Dwight Howard, Tim Duncan, Shaq, Kaman guys like that are less important in the international game. They're forced further from the hole on offense, and have to defend pick and roles against quicker big men who would rather shoot the three anyway. Chris Bosh has been so effective because he's so versatile. You are correct however the guards to deserve alot of the credit for pressuring the ball. It has absolutely made it harder for teams who would actually try to attack the post to do so.

The two stand outs from this team have been Wade and Bosh. The rumors of the death of D. Wade were highly exaggerated. I thought Coach K was the perfect fit for a team like this (no long season for him to wear them down for an inevitable collapse), but I've been wondering, do people think this team's performance is Coach 's doing, or the players coming together and deciding they aren't losing?

I'm just happy that Kobe and Carmelo aren't getting all the face time/credit. They are both severely overrated - ESPECIALLY in a team game with the international rules where the system is more effective than the individuals.

I think this team maybe in fact a little better than the dream team, only because of their team defense. Watching Kobe take apart the other teams point players has been very interesting, especially when you consider this is the really first time the USA team completely understands the Olympic style of play and basketball rules. Different teams different players but same result Olympic Gold. Only if this team continues to play the type of pushing defense and hits the shots outside the paint.

Better than Dream Team? Ridiculous. Who would win a game if you jumped in the time machine and played them against each other?

NO CONTEST.

Dream Team was the best basketball team ever assembled HANDS DOWN - even WITH Christian Laettner on the team instead of Shaq. They had how many Hall of Famers as ROLE players???

Go no further than Magic, Larry and MJ. Add 9 AGMers with those three and "Redeem Team" would lose...

My buddy and I were debating this same issue and he suggested to me "but the dream team had so many HoFers" while the Redeem team has none...of course my response was...well they're all playing right now...

So we considered the following concepts. Given their current status and previous results, what can you ascertain from the current team. Moreover, its important to keep in mind that the redeem team still has numerous years to add to their own legacy...its unfair to both squads to suggest that one is better, simply because A) the Dream team is filled with legends and B) the Redeem team has potential legends that, given what we knew in 1992, would probably be the same for those on the dream team

Then again, we also played with a system, which did give the benefit of the doubt to the redeem team but also really pushed some ideas. Keep in mind, I'm a basketball amateur (and a moron), but its at least a fun idea

Redeem team roster:

Carmelo Anthony

Carlos Boozer - High Level NBA Talent

Chris Bosh - Potential Mid Level HoFer

Kobe Bryant - Top Flight HoFer/Legend

Dwight Howard - Potential Mid to Top Flight HoFer

LeBron James - Legend

Jason Kidd - HoFer

Chris Paul - ??? Top Flight HoFer?

Tayshaun Prince - Top Flight NBA Talent

Michael Redd - Top Flight NBA Talent

Dwyane Wade - Potential HoFer

Deron Williams - Mid Level HoFer

And now the Dream Team:

David Robinson - Mid/Top Flight HoFer

Patrick Ewing - Top Flight HoFer

Larry Bird - Legend

Scottie Pippen - Mid HoFer

Michael Jordan - Legend

Clyde Drexler - Mid/Top Flight HoFer

Karl Malone - Top Flight HoFer

John Stockton - Mid HoFer

Chris Mullin - Good NBA Talent

Charles Barkley - Top Flight NBA Player

Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Jr. - Top Flight/Legend

Christian Laettner - Bum

I'd still go with the dream team but they do have the advantage of 12 complete NBA careers...

Wasn't that bad...

The Redeem team has Kobe, LeBron and JK as legitimate HOFers, and a couple "maybes" and a handful of "probably nots"

The whole Dream Team is Hall of Famers except Laettner, (Mullin will be, eventually).

The Dream Team would destroy the Redeem Team.

Consider the 2004 squad by comparison

Tim Duncan, Emeka Okafor, Carmelo Anthony, Carlos Boozer, Richard Jefferson, Shawn Marion, Lamar Odom, Amare Stoudemire, LeBron James, Allen Iverson, Stephon Marbury, Dwyane Wade

Of those, Only Anthony, Boozer, James and Wade returned (mostly because they were all really young)...

and only Duncan is a surefire HoFer, While LeBron, Iverson and (maybe?) wade are probablies

I did some whatifing a while back with this question, and the Dream Team came out ahead, but this year's squad definitely won some games. I found it mildly ironic that potentially Karl Malone and P-Ew could've been the difference makers.

I'd say the current team had four sure Hall Of Famers, with a couple of more possibles. That is a good point, given the historicizing some do about previous teams. There are some great players today, and some of them are on this team. The Dream Team was a contrived monster that has no real match ever.
