Two Coaching Decisions Influence Playoff Wins - And Norv Turner Got It Right

If you listened to the pundits last week discussing the Chargers/Titans game, you heard the same idea over and over again:

Norv Turner was a liability to the Chargers' hopes of winning the playoff game.

Turner has been a favorite target of analysts since the moment he was hired last summer. No one seems to doubt Turner's abilities as an offensive coordinator, but his history as a failed head coach in both Washington and Oakland have led to an inordinate amount of criticism as the coach of San Diego.

Turner made a critical decision yesterday at a critical moment that helped his team advance to Indianapolis next week. The Chargers were faced with 4th and goal from just outside the 1-yard line, trailing the Tennessee Titans 6-0. The crowd wanted to go for the touchdown. The team wanted to go for the touchdown.

Norv Turner kicked the field goal.

Was it the correct decision? The proof is in the pudding - the Chargers dominated the game from that point forward and defeated the Titans 17-6. The decision to get the points, keep the momentum and ignore the cat calls from the crowd and players was a difficult, but important one.

As an offensive guy, you know Turner wanted to score the touchdown. You know he had a list of plays in his head to get it done. He also had the sense to make the right call. The Titans defense was stingy all afternoon and points were tough to come by. The Chargers' all-world tight end and favorite red zone threat Antonio Gates was out with a toe injury. And what if the Chargers had been stuffed on 4th down? Momentum swings back to the Titans, the Chargers come away with nothing once again and are forced to play from behind (limiting Tomlinson and exposing Philip Rivers to the Titans impressive pass rush) in order to advance.

Compare Turner's decision to the one make by Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin against the Jacksonville Jaguars. With the Steelers down 28-23 and over 10 minutes left in the game, Tomlin decided to go for two points to make it a 3 point game. With so much time left in the game, the Steelers were likely to get two or maybe three more possessions, so there was absolutely no need to gamble for two points.

To make matters worse, the Steelers were penalized for holding on the initial try (which they did convert) and were moved back 10 yards. Tomlin's decision? To try for two points again.

Huh?

The Steelers failed on the attempt, leaving them down 5 points. They then scored the next touchdown of the game, making the score 29-28. Now Tomlin was forced to try another 2-point conversion just to get the score where it should have been with two simple extra points. If Tomlin had not panicked, his team would have led 31-28. Instead, up only 1 point, Josh Scobee's field goal gave the Jags a 31-29 victory over Tomlin's Steelers.

It is easy to pick on Norv Turner, but for one important afternoon he made the right decision in a key moment that gave his team the best chance to win. It is not easy to pick on Mike Tomlin, a popular coach who made a terrible decision that hurt his team's chances to win their playoff game.

Yeah I hear what you are saying in the article but IF the Chargers would have lost that game you would be writting an article ripping on him. And Timlin's decision was just bad. I don't understand what he was thinking at all. You chase points when you need to chase points. Until then you kick the damn ball. That decision cost me a lot of money. Thanks Tomlins. However, I made a ton of money on the Giants!

The is no difference between being down 5 and down 4. Thats why Tomlin went for it, so that they would be within three. Kicking the extra point there, does nothing for you except some sort of moral victory.

I would not have ripped Turner for going it there because I'm pretty conservative and think you should always take points when you can get them, but I imagine most people would have done so. One reason I decided to write about this is because it gets so little credit when it really deserves it. Going for it on 4th down is supposed to take guts, but it seems to be that doing what an entire stadium and group of players wants to do is easy, not gutsy.

I gotta say, giving in to the fans is a very bad sign about a coaches leadership.

Steel Town - there is a HUGE difference between being up 3 vs. being up 1. That is the problem with the decision - it was so short-sighted. With 10 minutes left in the game, Tomlin should not have been thinking that he needs to get within three points. He should have taken the easy point. When the Steelers scored again, he would have had a 3 point lead. It makes NO sense to start going for two points so early in the game.

The Steelers lost by how many points? 2, that's right. If he had kicked the extra point, they would have lost by one. That easy point doesn't mean a thing.

BTW, there was no holding on that play. The refs really blew that one. (Not an excuse, just an observation)

Steel Town - they lost by 1 because they went for two, then had to go for two again because of the initial mistake. Kick two extra points & you are up three. And you are correct - that was an AWFUL holding call and a great catch by Ward. Should have been 2 points.

I can agree with you on the second attempt from the 12. But they did convert on the first one and I thought it was a good decision. The Steelers had the momentum and were confident they could get it in for 2. It worked. I don't really know why he went for it the second time.

Agreed, Norv did a good job to keep the critics off his back for a few more days, but by no means am i agoing to crown him as a great coach now after one playoff win. He still has a long way to go to prove himself to me.

The Chargers definately dropped off this year, not much changed besides the head coach.

The impotent Titans offense had a bit more to do with San Diego's win than any decisions made by Norv Turner. Tomlin's decisions were questionable. You don't start looking at that cheat sheet that tells you when to go for 2 until the clock has time for only 1 or 2 possessions.

C'mon Rawb, you have been following a team all year that has continually bucked the conventional football "wisdom". As I said before, forget about what he was supposed to do, that two points makes it a tie game.

When you have Brady, Moss, and Welker, you can buck all the wisdom you want. Otherwise, you have to play within conventional norms.

They got the two, a bad call took it away. And all it took was little ol' Ben Roethlisberger and Hines Ward.

The Chargers played well yesterday....but playing a defense like the Titans did allowing Chambers to get open helped a littttle bit. Oh, and the "never hold on to the ball" RB's that are LenDale White and Chris Brown also helped. Oh yeah, and a Rob Bironas chip shot missed helped them a little bit too. Wait, and that craptastic offensive line allegedly protecting the ass of Vince Young helped some more. Other than that, great game by San Diego.

Can't we just all agree that it's easier looking back and saying "should have, could have, why did't he, why did he..." blah blah blah blah blah. He took and risk. Risks will either make you a god or make you a retard who gets fired and lose your job leaving your wife and kid out on the streets. For example I put a lot of money on the Giants.

Pretty proud of that Giants pick, huh? You going to let it ride this week against the Cowboys?

It is easy to Monday quarterback, but I would argue that the two DECISIONS would have both been wrong even if they had worked. Hitting on 19 and catching a deuce will make you some money in blackjack, but it is a terrible decision. I think going for two in Tomlin's case or going on 4th in Turner's case were both the wrong decisions. Turner made the right one by kicking the field goal.

Even if the field goal had been blocked, the decision was still the right one. Even if the holding call had not occured and the Steelers had converted for two, the decision was still wrong.

Hi, Since my fave Buccaneers got eliminated it is nice that the "local" Chargers won their game. Would Marty Schottenheimer have won that game? is the question to ask. The Chargers have a good chance to win against the Colts, too.

It's unfortunate to all that their dreams continue onward after this weekend. It really doesn't matter who won the last games.... unfortunately it's going to be a freakin Dallas-N.E. superbowl. I also heard that they are going to move the superbowl up into the mountains for Tom and Tony. Rumor has it that for the last 2 summers they have spent a lot of time in some undisclosed mountain herding sheep. Since it's going to be a media love fest over who has the "nicer ass" the NFL has decided to grant Tom and Tony's wishes. The superbowl is now going to be called the "Bustin' Chop Bowl". This of course is also the saying of the day.

The only thing that counts in coaching decisions is execution. We wouldn't be talking about Norv Turner's field goal decision to be good if the Chargers would have ended up losing. We wouldn't be talking about Mike Tomlin's bad 2 point decision if the Steelers would have gotten 2 points (even after the "holding" call). People talk about coaching moves based on the outcome, not whether it was actually a good or bad decision initially.

hey steel town. go back to math class. tomlin blew it. i love the steelers and was nearly sick watching him go for two from the 12??? there were 10.5 minutes left and the steelers were moving the ball at will. the 2 extra points would have tied the game. he choked, plain and simple. in addition, after garrard ran for the first on 4th and 2, he let the clock tick off about 13-14 seconds. and what about pittsburgh having the ability to keep the ball and run out the clock. 3 runs and a punt??? ben was on FIRE in the 2nd half. tomlins first year was all in all pretty good, his first playoff game was a DISASTER.
