Twins Add New Design: Santana Staying?

The Twins have added new graphic art to their website.

<"min_logobanner_primary.jpg">;"

In this picture is: Joe Mauer (3 years left), Ron Gardenhire (not going anywhere), Justin Morneau (just signed a new multi-year deal) and Michael Cuddyer (also just signed a new multi-year deal). Also, is Johan Santana. This is the first day I have seen this new graphic. Could this mean that Sid Hartman's article[1] about Santana's agent realizing we made a good offer be true, and he could be locked up as well?

My question is... Why would the Twins create a new graphic with a player they are planning on trading, just to have to make a new in a few weeks?

It's not happening. Boston doesn't seem to want him anymore

The Twins may be hard up for cash but one would think it would not cost that much to change a banner.

Love the new banner! I also like the modification of the "This is Twins Territory" logo. Very nice! Right now, the only talk I've heard this week regarding Johan Santana has been the Mets. Only if he doesn't stay in Minnesota, I'd prefer one of the New York teams where he'd wind up. Forget Boston, they've already got a solid rotation. Besides, who needs me to root against Santana if he's wearing that dreaded uniform?

I agree with Trizz, if they disclude Santana, they are all but telling the fanbase that they don't expect him to be around.

Yeah, if you're making a new graphic, you've gotta keep your best player on there even if you are still looking to trade him. Otherwise fans would look at it as a pink slip and not buy as many tickets. That being said, I don't think Santana's going anywhere.

Holy hell. The Twins are not hard up for money. Carl Pohlad is the 349th richest person in the world. His net worth is $2.6 billion. And yet, he never spends money on his team and is forcing the Twins fans to finance their new stadium. Oh, and the Red Sox don't need Santana, and any team giving up top prospects for one year of Santana are overpaying...by a lot.

stadiums are a very high risk investment. When Robert Kraft paid for Gillette Stadium, it took him over a decade to pay of the debt from it. If the team doesn't succeed relatively shortly after the stadium, it gets harder and harder to break even on the stadium.

And that's while Kraft was winning Super Bowls AND taking in massive playoff revenue and revenue sharing.

The stadium thing is a whole separate issue, but as for Pohlad not spending his money on players...obviously, he *could* spent more money on players. But all the owners are billionares, and they all could spend more than they're spending too. If you start ripping one owner for not spending his money, then you're going down a slippery slope...next thing you know, every team has a $200 million payroll and average players are making $20 million per year.

The Twins are only paying $125 million dollars of the total $522 million dollar tag. I realize they are expensive investments, and the public funding for stadiums (which I realize all teams do) doesn't bother me as much as the idea of an open-air stadium in Minneapolis.

like they wanted it in downtown minneapolis, and there was no way in hell they could get any money to pay for the roof

buliding open air in the Twin Cities makes as much senes as spending for a retracable roof in San Diego.

I'm going to take your word for it, FP, you know much more about Minnesota sports than I do.

The only think I know about Minny sports, other then that the Lakers use to be there and stuff about the Vikings, is... nothing. I also take FPs word on Minny Sports.

the problem was that they wanted to put it in Downtown.

Burnsville (which is like 30-40 minutes from downtown) was willing to pay for it and put a retractable roof on it, but they didn't want to put it out there. Truth be told, there's not a lot out there. Zygi Wilf (the Vikings owner) is putting some developments out there, so probably a few years after the stadium open, there will be some activity out in the area.

It was a lose-lose scenario for the twins, but they took one of the two options
