Trizz vs. The Retired Number

Everyone wants to be remembered, whether it's by having children or getting a bronze statue. In sports, there are three ways to be remembered for doing something wrong: becoming a hall of famer or having your number retired. So anyway I was watching the Celtics game and the commentators were talking about Kevin Garnett who was prohibited to wear his 21 and instead had to settle for 5, one of the few numbers left. The Celtics have 22 retired numbers, thats almost 25% of numbers allowed to be worn. At what point does this honorable deed become excessive?

For some players, they choose their numbers because of sentimental reasons or to idolize their favorite player. Yet if they were to end up on the same team as their idol they would have to change it. While I think its a great deed to preserve the memories of players at the same time its not like your are making sure everyone knows Dennis Johnson, you are just saying there will never be another #3. Growing up I had no idea who half of the retired numbers were so it seems a little unnecessary to me.

Fact of the matter is that if the Celtics had got Kevin Durant, that wouldn't make people forget about Reggie Lewis; it's just a number. And while you can say your right it's just a number, so why don't current players just pick unretired numbers? The NBA is still a business. Jersey sales is a key part of their revenue and I don't see myself buying a #69 jersey, no matter how good the player is. If you look at the picture provided the numbers 1, 2, 3, 6, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 31, 32, 33, 35, 00 and if you count Dee Brown, Antoine Walker, and Paul Pierce all likely retirees, thats 7, 8, and 34 off limits. Now look at how many players wear those numbers. Point I'm getting at is that there must be another way to remember these guys than copyrighting numbers. What do you think my fellow Armchairicans?

Too many jokes..:)

As for retired numbers...it should be up to the notable players who wore the jersey number to decide whether a player is worthy of it....not the organization.

Why in the hell would the C's EVER retire Dee Brown or Walker's numbers??? The C's could always get creative and go to Triple Digits!!

Why would talking about Bias get you minused? Is the fact he was a #1 draft pick on Sunday and Tuesday he was dead from snorting a half pound of blow? Or because he screwed the next five generations of his family out of never working again? Or he screwed the Celtics out of a couple more rings? I wouldn't minus you because of that.

I don't know, I've already been in trouble with Boston sports fans on this site, and another one, so I don't want to continue.

Instead of correcting me, you could have said - the Yankees were the first team to wear numbers (as well as the first to retire a number - 4) Besides, twice sounds better... Oh, and when Mo Rivera hets his number retired - I WILL be right!!! Ha Ha!!!

The Yankees were the first team to permanently wear numbers, in 1929. However, the 1916 Cleveland Indians were the first ML team to wear numbers, on their uniform sleeves. They were removed because fans complained they couldn't see them and the idea was shelved.

Yeah, the Indians also put numbers on the back the same year as the Yanks, but let's be honest here... the Indians don't count.

They'll probably have another one retired, if they can: Mariano's 42 (it's already retired by Jackie Robinson).

I dont think that having a lot of numbers retired in basketball is that bad since you only have 12 players on a roster, football is a whole different story though since they have 45 active players per week.

Hence why I've always believed in symbols instead of numbers on jerseys. "Holding on the offense, on the lineman formerly known as 73. 5 yard penalty..."

Announcer 1: "Ampersand to Star for the touchdown!!! What a comeback!" Announcer 2: "Look at the blocks he had on that play. First Pound Sign took out Yield and Obtuse Triangle then that paved the way into the secondary where he juked Pedestrian Sign, ran right over Women's Restroom and scored! Waht a play!"
