Trade Rumor: Coco Crisp to the Chicago Cubs?

For the first time in years, the Boston Red Sox are facing a player logjam in the outfield. Since of those players is a top 10 MLB prospect (Jacoby Ellsbury) and one of them is the best defensive centerfielder in baseball (Coco Crisp), platooning doesn’t seem to be an option. That leaves one other course of action, a trade.

The Deal: The Chicago Cubs are the first team to come calling for a swap that includes Coco as the centerpiece. Unfortunately, they are putting starting pitcher Jason Marquis and outfield prospect Sam Fuld on the table and the Red Sox want nothing to do with either of them.

My Analysis: Jason Marquis is a VERY overpaid number 4 starter that has never been able to put up consistent numbers. You might remember him as the guy that the Sox got 7 walks and 6 hits off of in 7 innings during the 2004 World Series. He’s not worth getting even if it is to add a tiny bit of depth to the starting pitching.

Sam Fuld was an MVP in the Arizona Fall League during 2007 and has put up stellar numbers for the Cubs AAA team (.269 BA but an insane .397 OBP). He could be major league ready but he’s got Felix Pie and a few other players in front of him so he doesn’t look to start anytime soon. The only problem is that we already have too many outfielders and we don’t need another one.

Look for Boston to counter with a request for more prospects (3B or C preferably) or someone to help out in the bullpen.

If Coco DOES get traded, I'll miss him too. He was like a daily highlight reel.

Wouldn't Marquis get bumped to the #5 starter? Also, he is currently making $16.5 million over the next two years (again, for a #5 pitcher) compared to Crisp's $11 million so it would mean adding even more salary. I just don't see a reason for it.

The current rotation (in my opinion): 1. Beckett 2. Matsuzaka 3. Wakefield 4. Lester 5. Buchholz

If you figure that one of the top 3 will go down for some time before/if Schilling comes back than Colon steps in. If a starter goes down and Buchholz isn't ready to carry a full MLB schedule than you have Tavarez. I just don't see where Marquis fits in.

Man, I wish they hadn't done the Gabbard, Beltre, and Murphy for Gagne trade.

Colon has been doing really well during spring training. I know Spring Training doesn't matter much at all, except for the players when they're competing for a position, but for Bartolo Colon, it sure does matter. He's competing for a position in the starting five. I honestly think that since Jon Lester has a really high pitch count most of the time, they're going to stick with him as the main middle reliever (sorry Tavarez), and have 'Tolo in the #5 spot.

Anywhere Coco goes, he'll be missed. I'm sure Cleveland fans miss him too. Not as much as the season he went to Boston, but still enough to feel a little emotional.

Even though he's a sucky batter, he's got great defense. What are we going to do with him now that we have Manny, Drew, and Ellsbury to rely on? :(

Either he's gonna get traded, or he's not gonna get any playing time. I feel bad for COCO!

He's got pretty good range from what I've seen. He didn't make an error last season in 257 innings played. Pretty good for a rookie. I can't wait to see what he'll do in the outfield this year...

his defense is overrated, and he's pitaful at the plate... trade him and give jacoby his well deserved chance.

His defense is probably the best in baseball at this point...maybe you're thinking of his arm, which isn't very good.

Hey, at least it's better than Johnny Damon's. Ellsbury's is better. Center field just gets better on defense. I wonder who we'll get after Ellsbury. :)

Ellsbury does have a better arm than Coco. But Crisp covers more ground in center than anybody in baseball (with the possible exception of Beltran).

Ellsbury's arm is NOT better than Johnny Damon's, you homer. And it's not better than Coco's either.

Last year at this time everyone was saying "Dice-K will win 22 games and the Cy Young and ROY and blah blah blah. What happened is he did what everyone else who aren't Sox fans knew, he's a barely .500 pitcher who was whacked around far too often to be considered a top pitcher.

A year from now Red Sox fans will all be saying, "damn, Ellsbury really isn't that good after all, I wish we had Coco back."

Think I'm full of shit? Let's talk in October then, shall we?
