New York Yankees

Let's face it: the Yankees needed to add some offense; it's hard to believe, but it's true. They added a productive bat in Xavier Nady, a quality veteran lefthanded relief pitcher in Damaso Marte and an everyday catcher in Ivan Rodriguez. The Yankees didn't give up anything that cannot be replaced. Ross Ohlendorf has really good stuff but no command, at the moment. He is still young enough that he might be good. Mike McCutcheon and Jose Tabata are solid prospects. Tabata was once referred to as a Manny Ramirez without power. Now he's tossed aside because of disciplinary problems? He's only 19, so giving him up was a gamble. Jeff Karstens had no future with the Yankees. Kyle Farnsworth is not to be trusted in a big spot. Plus, if Jorge Posada has any setbacks, don't rule out the Yanks resigning Pudge and making Posada a first basemen (Jason Giambi's contract is up next year).

Los Angeles Dodgers

C'mon, how can you not love this trade? They get Manny Ramirez, don't have to pay him and give up two prospects. Sometimes one big bat like Manny can reconstruct an entire lineup. Really, the Dodgers have quality bats in Matt Kemp, Russell Martin, Andre Ethier, Jeff Kent, and James Loney, but they lacked the straw to stir the drink. Manny's presence might make this a potent linuep, I still think the Dodgers are a little thin on pitching, but this is a weak division, so perhaps they can pull it out.

Chicago Cubs

Granted it wasn't at the deadline, but I still love the Cubs getting Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin. The Cubs showed you that you can never have enough pitching. Harden is a no. 1 starter when healthy and Gaudin is good in middle relief. Plus, I don't like Matt Murton or Eric Patterson. They showed nothing in their stints with the Cubs. Sean Gallagher has good stuff, but he's too young to rely on this year for a World Series run. The Cubs have given themselves a legitimate shot to win it all this year.

Arizona Diamondbacks

"What did they do?" you might ask. Well, quietly, they added Tony Clark to their bench and Jon Rauch to their bullpen. Clark is a power bat off the bench and a veteran presence, which this young Diamondback team can use more of. They also, obviously, have trouble scoring runs, so Clark should help. However, getting Rauch was a steal. This guy is as durable as they come and has excellent stuff. Adding him to an already solid bullpen (Chad Qualls, Tony Pena, Brandon Lyon) was quietly a really solid move.

Neutral

Chicago White Sox

I didn't know that the White Sox needed another guy who hits .240 and hits home runs (see Nick Swisher, Paul Konerko, and Jim Thome). I also didn't know that Ken Griffey Jr. can play center field anymore or not get hurt doing it. He has to play center with Carlos Quentin and Jermaine Dye manning the corner spots. I don't think the White Sox needed offense and Nick Masset was important in the bullpen. Kenny Williams sounded as though he made this trade so that Griffey had a chance to play in a World Series. Nice sentiment, but I don't think it helps the White Sox at all.

Los Angeles Angels

Not quite sure this trade was necessary either. Casey Kotchman is younger, still under arbitration and is having a breakout year. He only has 11 homers but that should improve with age. He has been hitting close to .300 all year and driving in runs behind Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter. Teixiera has better power numbers and RBIs, but he also was hitting third in Atlanta. Plus he is a free agent at the end of the year, meaning that the Angels will really overpay to keep him or they end up without a first basemen next year. I just don't think this team needed more power and Kotchman was a nice compliment in the lineup.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Really, what difference does anything that this team does make? Now they have a million prospects, some of which will become good major league players. When that happens, they will trade them for prospects. This team should be blown up.

Philadelphia Phillies

I don't know, I just don't get the whole Joe Blanton fascination. He's just not that good and he's not a difference maker for the Phillies. In fact, they have plenty of starting pitchers who are just like him.

Losers

Boston Red Sox

I like Jason Bay, but give me a break. The Red Sox gave up one of the best hitters I've ever seen, pay the rest of his contract and give up two solid prospects (Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss) for Jason Bay. Bay is basically slightly better than J.D. Drew, a .280 career hitter who will hit 30 homers and drive in 100 RBIs. He's a nice player, but he can never put fear in an opponent like Ramirez and cannot protect Ortiz to the same degree either. Boston already has some problems offensively and this trade won't help. Nor did they improve their bullpen.

Atlanta Braves

Atlanta gave up 5 prospects, including Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Elvis Andrus (SS) for Mark Teixeira last season, failed to make the playoffs and then trade him for Casey Kotchman and a prospect this year because they didn't want to pay Teixeira. Kotchman may turn out to be good, but they traded a lot to get Teixeira and they needed to resign him.

New York Mets

I don't know what Omar Minaya is smoking, but this team has holes in the outfield, in the rotation, and in the bullpen, and the Mets stand pat. John Maine has shoulder problems, Pedro Martinez is a shell of his former self, they have gotten way more than they could have ever thought out of Fernando Tatis, and the bullpen needed a shot in the arm. I don't think the Mets will have enough to make the playoffs this season.

Seattle Mariners

This team has shown no guts all year and had pieces to trade in Jarrod Washburn and Raul Ibanez. Make the trade! They should have given Washburn to the Yanks for a bunch of bats if they were going to take his $11 million contract for next season. Jarrod Washburn has been awful since they signed him. Plus, Raul Ibanez, a rather average outfielder, was also in demand.

Oakland Athletics

Don't get it at all. Someone explain to me why the A's are fielding a team? To continue to beat the small market mantra is understandable, but when you trade Dan Haren, who was signed to a reasonable contract beyond this year, and Rich Harden, who was signed to a reasonable contract beyond this year, and you trade Harden when you are only 5 games out of first before the All-Star break, then you aren't even trying. Like the Pirates, the A's give their fans no reason to root for them. Take them off the map.

Detroit Tigers

They should have been sellers because they aren't making a run at anything this year. They have a lot of tradeable pieces too.

Why is it so difficult for people to understand the Manny Ramirez trade? Five words:

I understand the Ramirez trade, I just don't agree with it. Manny has always been a selfish, classless act and yet he helped the sox win 2 World Series titles. It's a gamble because you are in danger of getting nothing for him at the end of the year and at least now you have Bay for next year but why do you think Ortiz voted no to trading Manny. No one in their right mind will pitch to Ortiz now.

People are drinking too much of the Gammons Cool-Aid...Hansen's ERA is close to 6 and Moss has been in the minors for 6 years for a reason. Yeah, both of them could have been helpful, but Aardsma will come off the DL (I trust him more than Hansen anyway), and Coco/Jacoby will be the fourth outfielders. It's not a big loss. Hindsight is 20/20 (see: trading David Murphy for Gagne), but right now, both of those aren't as big losses as some people would like to make them seem.

First off, I could care less what Peter Gammons says since I know what I'm talking about. Hansen is a quality arm, obviously he hasn't performed well for the Red Sox but he has good stuff and like most young pitchers, needs to have better control. I stand by my statement that he is a good prospect. Plus you are forgetting that the Red Sox traded MANNY RAMIREZ. Why would they throw in any prospects at all? Red Sox fans are the least objective people I've ever met. So please, stop drinking the Theo Eptein, Red Sox propaganda cool aid.

You could have the best stuff in the world and not be a good pitcher. He might do better in Pittsburgh without all the pressure, we'll see. They traded the prospects because they had to in order to trade Manny. They would have not been able to get rid of him straight up.

You probably should pay more attention to what Gammons says, because you're not as smart as you think.

The Yankees signed Posada knowing full well he would move to first after this year, and would DH as well. You're about 8 months late on your "don't rule it out" theory.

Neither Moss nor Hansen are "top prospects". While I believe Hansen will eventually become a mid-level closer in the Jose Valverde/Brandon Lyon mode, he had no chance of beating out Paplebon and no chance of becoming the next Mariano Rivera.

The Red Sox likely would have lost Moss at the end of this year as a 6 year minor league free agent. While he has no value as a ML outfielder, (he can't even beat out Ellsbury), at least you can say the Sox got something for him. He's a fourth OF at best, any team breaking spring training with Moss in their starting lineup isn't a very good team to begin with.

Jason Bay is a far better player than JD Drew. While it's true Manny's a HOF player, he is clearly on the downside of his career, over the next year or two Bay's production would have surpassed Manny's. Drew is an 11 year ML player who spent the majority of that career in ballparks favorable to LH hitters and has had ONE 30 HR season and ONE 100 RBI season, and that was 100 even. He has made ONE All-Star team. Bay is in his sixth season and has spent the entire six years playing in a ballpark which is death for RH hitters and in a lineup where he is the only true offensive threat, yet has still managed 2 30 HR seasons and 2 100 RBI seasons, and will reach those totals this year as well.

Bay is one of the most underrated players in the game, Drew, in my opinion, is the most overrated.

The Dbacks were losers, not winners. The Pirates were winners, not neutral, the Mariners and Braves shouldn't even be on the list because they have no postseason shot.

Tabata has been passed as an OF prospect by Austin Jackson. Yes, the Yankees grew tired of a player with a bad attitude and no production. McCutchen is a mid level prospect, he could make it or not, Karstens is coming off an injury, and while your statement about having little future with the Yankees is true, its not because he sucks, its because the Yankees have more prospects ahead of him. He pitched pretty good yesterday against the best team in the NL, on the road. Ohlendorf is also coming off an injury, he, too, should do well in Pittsburgh.

You want to battle wits with me? Ok, fine.

How can I be 8 months too late about Posada when he got hurt this season and the yanks just traded for I-Rod? I am commenting on recent events that could lead I-Rod to stay with the Yanks into next season. Did you foresee rotator cuff surgery and I-Rod being traded to the Yanks, 8 months ago? If so, please go to Las vegas and get off this site.

I never used the term "top prospects" so don't "quote" me inaccurately. I said they are prospects. How you define that to me is someone who has a chance to be a major league starter. As you admit that Hansen (a first round pick) could be a mid-level closer (never heard that term, is that a closer?), then I think you agree wtih my comment. If moss is a 4th outfielder, that's better than no chance at all to make a roster. He then has some value, especially since many contending teams (mets, marlins, yankees) were looking for outfielders.

Don't know where you got the idea that I was complimenting J.D. Drew. Believe me, as a Yankee fan, I'm always glad to see him up in a big spot. However, the numbers speak for themselves. Jason Bay's numbers are not superstar level, sorry, take a look at them again.

Wake me up when the Pirates contend with the very same players from the Red Sox that you are claiming are not top prospects who they received for Jason Bay, who you are claiming is the next Manny Ramirez. How that makes the Pirates winners is beyond my comprehension. You have argued against yourself in circles but that's besides the point.

I can comment on any teams I like and claim that they are winners or loses since it's my article. It is your own narrow mindedness that does not understand that a team not in the pennant race can and should make trades to help them for next season.

Thanks for the cogent argument that proves that the D-backs are losers.

Your discussion of the Yankees prospects makes no point. Was I right or wrong? I still say the Yankees are winners and don't think we disagree at all. My point was that the Yanks gave up nothing they can't replace, which you seem to agree with especially since you say that Austin Jackson has passed Tobata. I don't necessarily agree with that statement anyway (and it sounds like something Peter Gammons said). Tobata is 19, god, give the kid a chance.

If you want to add something to the conversation, fine, I'm all ears, otherwise, probably should go find something else to do.

The only one who took it personal was you. And careful about making assumptions, you have no idea who I am or what I do. There's a famous saying around here, "know your audience." Your assumption everyone around here is a faceless blogger like you couldn't be farther from the truth.

I didn't disagree because of his opinion, I disagreed because he used incorrect facts to form that opinion. Correcting him was the right thing to do, whether you agree or not.

You seem intent on arguing for some reason, maybe it's that faceless thing again, but whatever. My career in sports has long been established, Armchair is a forum to express opinions on a personal level, to talk about sports in a manner I don't get to do on a professional level. I don't have my own website or blog because I don't need one. I don't care who reads my stuff or votes for it.

So, again, have a nice day. If you want to have an intelligent conversation about sports, I'm your guy. If you want to make an incorrect assumption about something I said, then attempt to debate me on it, I know I have better things to do.

Good luck with your site, hope it gets you the attention and 15 minutes of fame you desire.

Posada was injured LAST year, he chose to attempt rehab over surgery.

OK, fine, top prospect, solid prospect. Apples and oranges.

The Pirates netted themselves six minor leaguers who will help them at some point, that makes them winners.

The Dbacks did nothing to improve themselves, that makes them losers.

You're right, it is your article. But when you say things like you don't care what Gammons says because you know what you're talking about, then write an article which proves otherwise, you have to expect to be questioned.

I have no problem with Peter Gammons, I was responding to someone who said that I was listening too much to Peter Gammons, which isn't true. I hardly listen to any of those guys, I watch the games, read statistics and scouting reports and formulate my own opinions. I know, really novel idea.

Still not sure what the problem is with what I said about Posada since I was commenting on the I-Rod trade and that he may not be a rental.

The Pirates netted players that will help them do what? If the idea is to field a team, yes they will help them do that. If the idea is to win, as soon as any of these players get good, the Pirates trade them. That's their history year in and year out.

True, that is the Pirates history, but they completely replaced their upper management and scouting over the offseason. There appears to be a new attitude in the clubhouse. Players are being held accountable. Players performing poorly are being sent down to the minors and minor leaguers are getting a chance to prove themselves. Neil Huntington stated that he was not going to make any trades this year unless it was to help the team in the longrun. That is exactly what he did. These were not salary dumping trades. They used their few players that they could and helped bring in some talent to a less than stellar minor league system. The Bucs have a horrible reputation, but the new management from CEO all the way down is showing that they do want to build a contender. Only time will tell, but from my perspective they are moving forward.

And let's not forget the biggest losers of all...Tampa. Every team in the postseason race in the AL made a move except Tampa. The two teams within their division made significant moves, they sat around and did nothing. I hope when they're sitting around after falling to third place and watching the postseason on TV they realize to be players you have to play the entire game, not just on the field playing

Unlike the Bucs, the A's are actually building for the future. Remember the A's teams we enjoyed almost getting by the Yanks early in the decade? We'll see more teams like that from Oakland in 2011,2012 and 2013.
