To Any Steelers Fan, I have a question?

So there I am sitting in front of my T.V. the other day and a special comes on about the Steelers' linebackers from this year and years past. Now, I am a Cowboys fan but my best friend is a Steelers fan so I follow them along with the NFL in general. So this program is going on about how great your linebacking corps have been throughout the ages, and yes I agree (who couldn't?). But when and where did Kevin Greene make his huge mark to be include in that list? Now if I'm wrong, I'll be the first to admit it but I just don't ever remember him really playing there. Any explanation would be great. Thanks. And GO STEELERS!!! KILL KURT!!!

And yes, I am back after a short absence. I know no one here missed me. GO NAVY! BEAT ARMY!

Well personally, I wouldn't have put him on the list with Lambert, Ham, Loyd, Porter, Harrison (etc., etc., etc), either. Greene played for Pittsburgh for just three years, but in two of those seasons he was a Pro Bowler and an All-Pro in one of those seasons ('94). So, I understand where they are coming from. I think he would've made a much bigger impact had he been a Steeler for more than those three seasons.

I couldn't agree more. That is exactly what I was thinking. I mean three years really wasn't that long with a team before the free agency era began.

What I don't understand is why a player of his caliber moved around as much as he did. He was a monster, a sack machine! Even in his final NFL season he recorded 12 sacks in Carolina. He played for four different teams (started in LA then to PIT for 3 seasons, Carolina for one and San Fran for one before going back to Carolina). In his 15 seasons Greene recorded 10+ sacks ten times, finished with 160 throughout his career. He had good size, too (6-3, 247 pounds).

I think that him being a roid-raging fellow might have had something to do with him moving around. Remember his sideline altercation with his D coordinator (I believe Kevin Steele) in Carolina?

Another thing is that I feel that the Steelers make the linebacker rather than the other way around. Pittsburgh values linebackers and puts them in a position to excel. This is not to say that these guys were not good/great linebackers before getting to Pittsburgh, but being in a place that has such a linebacker pedigree certainly helps.

At one point he was tied for the Steelers single season sack record. Plus, I believe he helped them get to the super bowl in '95 that they ultimately lost to your cowboys. Following his playing career he came back to Pittsburgh to help coach the linebacking corp in training camp. He was a fan favorite and comes back to the city for a number of charity and football related events. Hope this helped.

[edit] Football career Greene played football as a walk-on at Auburn University, and in 1984 won the Zeke Smith Award as Defensive Player of the Year. He had 69 career tackles as a Defensive End and 11 sacks his senior year. He was selected by the Birmingham Stallions in the 1985 USFL Territorial Draft and later selected by the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League in the fifth round (113th overall) of the NFL Draft the same year. He played for the Rams for eight seasons, and made the Pro Bowl in 1989 with the team. He later went to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he made two more appearances in the Pro Bowl and played in Super Bowl XXX, a loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He signed with the Carolina Panthers following their 1995 inaugural season and helped them reach the NFC Championship Game where the team lost to the eventual Super Bowl XXXI champion Green Bay Packers. In 1996 he was named the NFC Linebacker of the Year and received the George Halas Defensive Player of the Year Award. He set an NFL record with 5 consecutive multi-sack games. After one season with the Panthers, he played one season for the San Francisco 49ers before returning to the Panthers for his final two years. He retired in 1999 as a five-time Pro Bowler and the NFL's third all-time sack leader with 160, behind only Bruce Smith and Reggie White. He is one of only 3 players to lead the NFL in sacks in multiple seasons ('94 with the Steelers and '96 with the Panthers). He also ranked third all time in fumble recoveries with 26.

Damn that is crazy. Thanks for the stats. I never knew he was that good. Guess I was wrong to question him as a great linebacker. Just never realized that. Thanks again.
