The following is just a thought/philosophy and should not be taken as an opinion.  It is simply a thought experiment to see where people stand on this situation:

The CY Young is a funny award. The front runners for the award this season are Tim Lincecum and Cliff Lee. Both deserving of the award, no doubt. Isn't it funny though how both their teams don't know how to play .500 baseball?  Think about it.  A team has the best pitcher in the league, yet cannot seem to win more games than they lose.  What a shame?

What makes this argument most interesting is the comparison to the Most Valuable Player Award.  Most people agree that the CY Young is the MVP for pitchers.  When it comes to the actual MVP Award, it is argued by many that "Most Valuable Player" stands for the player who has helped their team the most when it comes to winning.  Think about how many times it is argued that a player who's team misses the playoffs should not win the award?  Think about how many times it is said that numbers do not matter the most but winning does?

Why does this same logic of arguing not apply to pitchers as well?  What makes pitchers the exception.  Either the MVP should be based solely on numbers or the CY Young should be based more on the teams individual performance.  Yes, position players have the ability to help their teams every day, but should this double standard even exist?

What;s the maximum impact a pitcher can make? Is it 32 perfect 9 inning starts? Even if that happens, the team is still only winning 32/162...or 20% of their games...what about the other 80% (which is a lot)

Last year's MVP, Jimmy Rollins played every game and had the most ABs...ever. Hypothetically, Jimmy could go at least 3/3 with 3 home runs and odds are that doing that every day will produce more wins than the pitcher pitching 32 perfect games...

The Cy Young is much more individual of an award while the MVP is probably more of a team award...

A very nice arguement. Hypothetically improbable but it gets the point across well. Why would you say it is more of a team award?

Admittedly, any human pitcher cannot do what he does without some help (defense and runs), but the fact of the matter is, both of those are probable outcomes...the best pitcher on the worst team will still win more than he loses (Maybe we should call this the Roy Halladay rule, because his offense sucks)

As an offensive player, you really can't do much else if your teammates don't help...and more over, hypothetical jimmy above would probably just get walked...

Home runs don't get hit without pitches to hit, RBI's don't get driven without baserunners, and hits don't really happen without a need to pitch to said player...

So if both require help (given that this is a team game) why can't they both be considered more of a team award?

Just to clarify, this is just to make you think, not to say you are wrong on any level. Understand?

would a pitcher with 288 consecutive perfect innings with a 0-0 record not merit the Cy Young?

technically speaking, if you remove wins from the equation, he doesn't need any help beyond defense

A batter needs help during every AB

The Cy Young is not the Most Valuable Pitcher award - it's an award for the BEST pitcher, period.

There IS an award that recognizes the best player as well - it's called "Player of the Year". They hand it out every year to the BEST player. It just doesn't get the fan fare because - it doesn't generate debate among the masses.

The Most Valuable Player is not the Best Player Award. Valuable, not Best... it's not a difficult concept.

Why is it not exciting? Is it not exciting because you believe it is not exciting? Is it a fact that is not exciting or an opinion? How does everyone feel on this issue?

I think the idea of the MVP/Cy awards going to "the best player on the best team" is absolute crap. Plus, the fact that Lee can go 20+ wins with under 2 losses, and Lincecum with only 3 losses, despite their teams being crap, actually shows how great they are pitching - they may be even better with good teams then they are now.
