This post is the greatest of all time

When Appalachian State beat Michigan this past weekend, people started immediately saying that it was the greatest upset of all time. Michigan came into the game ranked number five in the preseason polls and the Mountaineers are in the Football Championship Subdivision (or The Football Division Formerly Known as Div I-AA, iconic symbol pending), although they are two-time defending Football Championship Subdivision Championship Game Champions (no, that is not an error). When Corey Lynch blocked Michigan's field goal attempt to seal the game, history was made: for the first time ever, a Div I-AA team (I'm not going through that again) defeated a Top 25 opponent. But was it truly the greatest upset of all time?

Ever notice that we've had a lot of 'greatest of all time' moments lately? The Heat's Finals comeback over the Dallas Mavericks was called the greatest ever. The 2004 Red Sox ALCS win over the Yankees after falling behind 0-3 was too. The 2006 NCAA basketball tournament was called the greatest of all time, at least until the later rounds when everyone found out that huge upsets early in the tourney means good, not great, teams in the Final Four. The 2005 USC Trojans were hailed as the greatest team of all time, then lost the Rose Bowl and the National Championship to Vince Young and the Texas Longhorns. Then that game was called the greatest of all time and Vince's performance was called the greatest individual performance of all time.

OK, I won't argue with that last one.

We've even turned it into an ironic acronym: G.O.A.T. Used to be, if someone said, "Who's the goat?" the answer was Bill Buckner. Now it's Alex Rodriguez. Come to think of it, Barry Bonds could arguably be the answer to both questions.

Why do we feel the need to attempt to validate today's sporting events, teams and athletes by naming them the greatest of all time? Is it not good enough to put on a great performance? Why do we need our teams to defeat not only their opponent, but also history? Is it because we live in a world of mass media, the internet and SportsCenter highlights? Is it our arrogance to believe that we live in the greatest era of mankind? Or is it simply a desire to feel as though we are witnessing history at every turn? Whatever the case, we have become a society of statistical outliers, the tapered ends of the bell curve, where the greats of today (and the worst--it works that way as well) will be quickly replaced by tomorrows G.O.A.T.s (or goats, as the case may be).

App State's win over Michigan was not the greatest upset of all time, but it was a great game, and that's good enough for me.

In today's high paced society, we have become very sensationalistic (if that's a word) and in order to hold the viewer/reader's attention, authors feel the need to "hook" the audience. The more sensational the headline and story, the better. It gets people's attention and promotes discussion. Hence, the reason for calling events the 'Greatest X of All Time'.

Yeah, I know, I get all that. But it cheapens the experience and it's starting to have a 'cry wolf' effect, at least on me.

Me too. It's not the Greatest of All Time. It's a media created event to get and hold out attention.

Of the ones mentioned, the sox comeback was huuuuuge...that is the greatest comeback of all-time...i mean, a huge rivalry and a comeback by the little guy in a position that no one else had ever come back from...and then went on to win the whole thing...

I might agree with you, but something that might actually be deserving is cheapened by all the other G.O.A.T. talk. Particularly something like the USC situation when they lose right after being declared the greatest.

I know the App State game was the greatest college football upset in my eyes. Off course, that's coming from an Ohio State fan who was driving through the Appalachian Mountains as it happened...

The outlets that cover sports have so many different channels and publications, it seems like there's a glut of airtime and column inches. With the need to attract viewers RIGHT NOW, hyperbole starts to run amock. That is why we get so many "list" shows that declare one thing or the other "the best ever".

When I'm watching a game, I know when I've seen something great and I even know when I've seen something historic, but there's no scientific way to put everything in accurate historical context, especially with the limited footage of certian players/teams from the past. For instance, every list ranking the "greatest baseball players of all time" should include players from the Negro Leagues. Where should they rank relative to the ir MLB counterparts? We don't have video of the games, we don't have accurate newspaper coverage from the time. All we have is the fading, increasingly-romanticized memories of a few, which, as is the case with anything, tend to make biggest players of the day bigger, the fastest players faster, etc. That's not the proper foundation for a accurately ranked list.

Let's just agree that great players/teams/performances were great and appreciate each on its own merit.

The word "EVER" is the bane of this decade (The Naughty Aughties). It's the bastard offspring of "Awesome" and "gag me with a spoon".

I agree with you on most of this, but I don't think it is necessarily hyperbole to think that that upset was the biggest in college football history. There is no parallel for it.
