Yesterday, Major League Baseball announced their All-Star rosters for 2009, and to my surprise, Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton was named a starter.  Now, if you happened to be living under a rock for the past year or so, you may not think there is anything wrong with this.  But, if you happened to be following the MLB all season long, like myself, you would know that this is an outrage.  Personally, I would really like to know what is wrong with these fans.  He got his deserving attention last season when he surprised everyone with his sweet, powerful swing.  But come on.

Hamilton, hitting just .240 in his 35 games played thus far, is just coming off the disabled list today and has struck out 31 times with just six home runs.  Does anyone else think that Adam Lind was much more deserving of an all-star vote than Hamilton?  Lind has a nice story as well.  Lind quickly stole the spotlight in Toronto this year, alongside teammate Aaron Hill.  Lind has already doubled his career-high in HR's (18) and is hitting .310 as of today.  Adam is putting up career numbers while leading his Blue Jays to a 42-41 first half, eight games behind the first place Red Sox.

Hamilton will start in the outfield for the American League All-Stars in St. Louis despite playing in just 35 games.
Hamilton will start in the outfield for the American League All-Stars in St. Louis despite playing in just 35 games.

It wouldn't be quite as bad if Hamilton was an All-Star reserve instead of the starter.  Carl Crawford and Curtis Granderson, two of the American League's five outfield reserves, have had fantastic seasons with their respective team (Crawford: .318 BA, 41 SB; Granderson: 18 HR's, 43 RBI's, 15 SB) and were much more deserving than Hamilton.  Fans nowadays seem to latch on to someone, and after hearing Hamilton's story at last year's All-Star game in New York, fans just couldn't let go of him, which is really a shame.  The All-Star game is supposed to give players who have had a great first half some recognition and the chance to shine in front of millions (plus the media), especially for those small-market cities.  It gives them exposure while they compete for the World Series home field advantage for their league.

The American League got screwed.  Here they are attempting to win home-field in this year's World Series and one of their starters is just returning from injury and played just 35 games in the first half of the season.  Jermaine Dye and Nelson Cruz were notable outfielders who did not get the nod, both with 20+ HR's and close to a .300 batting average.  Other than this big screw-up on the fans' part and Michael Young getting the nod as the third base reserve over Brandon Inge, there really wasn't any other obvious mistakes with the rosters this year, although I wouldn't have been surprised had Manny Ramirez ended up on the NL roster, but luckily he is not.

On a brighter note, 22 players on the AL and NL rosters will be making their first career ASG appearance this year in St. Louis.  Most notable for this feat include Yadier Molina, Raul Ibanez, Matt Cain, Jonathan Broxton and Ryan Zimmerman for the NL; Zach Greinke, Tim Wakefield, Aaron Hill, Curtis Granderson, and Adam Jones for the AL.

I really don't have much more to say on this issue other than the fans need to start voting properly.  Lets start actually watching baseball and giving it to the hardworking, deserving players.

I didn't even bother participating in voting in what was a preposterous year of All-Star voting. Just like you said, Josh Hamilton is in over Dye and Cruz... that makes no sense to me. The all-star game is just a popularity contest now. Nothing matters, except the names of the "superstars"... guys who bust their asses everyday, guys like Dye and Cruz, like you said, basically get screwed. Good stuff, as always, Ben.

Oh, and by the way, Dan Haren played in the All-Star game twice already (he actually started the 2007 All-Star game for the American Leaguers, if I recall correctly).

But yeah, there are a lot of younger guys who have proved themselves to be MLB material, not to mention All-Star material. And also, there have been guys (i.e. Ibanez) who have had major breakout years and are finally getting recognized.

And I'd like to also point out that this is Wakefield's first All-Star game of his career. After 17 seasons, the 43 year old finally gets the nod to become an All-Star. Are there other pitchers who are more worthy than he is? You could make an argument for that. But for a guy who has a 10-3 record, I'd say that's pretty good to get you in, as you have held the lead so many times for your team to get those victories. (This may also lead to a good way to end his career. A championship would put the icing on the cake).

Whoops, that was a mistake. It's fixed. The rosters I was looking at said it was his first selection, so I blame that typo on them!

The selection process for All-Star Games has always been weird to me anyway... Are we selecting the players who we feel are the "best", as in "most talented"? Because I think there's no doubt Hamilton is one of the most talented players in the league, and a much better player than his '09 numbers alone would suggest. Or are we rewarding the best performance in the first 3+ months of the season, irrespective of talent (in which case Hamilton has no business being there, much less starting)? Is it just a matter of preference? And then there's the fact that the All-Star Game is really a showcase for the fans, so maybe there's nothing wrong with the fans picking their favorites without regard to either talent or performance.

For me, though, it keeps coming back to the home-field in the World Series. Why on earth you would take something that should be fun and laid-back like the ASG and arbitrarily assign it an importance completely out of step with the spirit of the festivities continues to blow my mind year in and year out. Because even though it's fun to argue about All-Star selections, in the end we wouldn't really care if Hamilton deserved to start, provided the ASG were just an exhibition game like it ought to be. But since "this one counts" (kill me now), something so silly as fans voting a favorite player in despite poor numbers suddenly takes on a ridiculous amount of meaning.

I agree...

Though, the only reason "this one counts" started was because of how pathetically lame it got. Personally, I think its great for fans to see their favorites play, irrespective of "talent," 1st half performance or whatever qualifiers. But I also remember thinking how much of a disservice it was to the fans that players would do nothing but swing for home runs (like a David Eckstein), not run out balls...in the field and just not play a real game...

I'm fine with it not meaning anything outside of those 4 hours, but if you're going to dick around, there's a celebrity softball game on Sunday...

Perhaps instead of "this one counts" they could give up bonuses (not sure of the financing) for winning the thing?

That's what I always wanted it to be about: none of this "World Series home field advantage" garbage... but just the fact that one league is better than the other. Why do I always root for the AL in the World Series? Because I am a Red Sox fan, and the Red Sox are in the NL. Granted, their are some teams and players that I like in NL, but I'm still going to want the AL to win over the NL.

For those soccer fans out there, it's like the Champions League. From my perspective, I wanted to see Barcelona win over Man U. Why? Because I'm a fan of La Liga... and to see Barcelona bring back the trophy to the Spanish league would be amazing. And they did just that.

(I know it's kinda different... but I'm trying to make some sort of analogy here).

It's all about the "fun" nowadays though. No one has a sense of pride for their team to win. Pete Rose was a great example of that.

Pete Rose was a classic on-off switch kinda guy...either you played (and you played hard) or you didn't play at all...(what'd be the point) Obviously, Manny Ramirez knows the in betweens...very well

Nice read there Ben. I truly enjoy your passion for the subject even if I do not share it. All Star Games are primarily exhibitions so I cannot get overly worked up over who goes and who stays.

Good article here Ben. As an Angel fan, I find this bothersome. Torii Hunter has been having a career year, yet Josh Hamilton gets voted in based on his performance from last season. Hello people, this is the 2009 all-star game, not the 2008 all-star game.

Im a big Hunter fan, and I agree with you 100% beast.

Youkilis over Morneau is crazy.

Youkilis has 14 HRs, 47 RBIs, a .290 avg, and a perfect fielding pct.

Morneau has 21 HRs, 69 RBIs, a .320 avg, and a .998 fielding pct.

Youkilis has a slightly higher OBP, but Morneau is on track for an amazing season, one that is significantly better than youkilis's. Granted, it helps to hit in between Mauer and Crede, but it's not as if Youkilis is stuck on a bottom of the pack roster. Then again, it's not surprising considering the Twins are regularly snubbed in All Star voting (Mauer doesn't count - if you make the cover of SI, it's hard not to get noticed).

Youk over Morneau isn't that much of a stretch... Set aside the RBI -- Morneau has come up with 62 more men on base, of course he has more RBI -- and the difference between the two is actually only a matter of 8 points of OPS. Not exactly a landslide, especially when you consider Youkilis is the better defender.

i mean, we're talking about 1.00 vs .992 for fielding pct this year. At that point it's basically a wash. Also, i'd rather have the rest of the red sox players on defense sans Mauer than the Twins defense. Not that it's a huge factor, but the better the rest of the team is, the fewer errors theyre likely to make. THen again, I might just be bitter that the Wild made a public service announcement that they no longer care about winning...

You should know by now that I couldn't care less about errors and fielding %... Btw, Minnesota has actually been the 6th-best defense in baseball at turning balls in play into outs -- and my Red Sox are 3rd-to-last.

i honestly didn't considering that you value defense more than almost anyone I know (and I tend to agree for the most part that D is undervalued). Anyways, that surprises me. The twins have had some pretty bad defensive performances this year. I did not expect them to be towards the top in defense

I wish that I could get up the interest that you have in the All-Star game, but it's been a long time since I cared one way or the other about it.

I think for curmudgeons like me, the best thing that MLB could do with the AS Game would be to scale it back. It's so in your face, and so grand, and then the game is usually a disappointment. When the home run derby is the thing that folks talk about most (at least, this is what I hear about most), then I think there is a fundamental problem. It seems that the game itself isn't enough.

Perhaps I am too far removed from it to be accurate in saying this. I would be the first to admit that I don't follow the AS Game any closer than listening to ESPN talk about it.
