The quote A-Rod would love to have back

From All on the Field sports blog:

When microphones and tape recorders are constantly shoved in your face and under your chin, it's tough to avoid occasionally sticking your foot in your mouth.

If anyone would know about media scrutiny, it's Alex Rodriguez. So Rodriguez should know that when you're asked a difficult question, you dodge it: not overtly, but by using a lot of words and subtly changing the subject or the tone of the conversation.

And A-Rod should certainly know that you never volunteer anything that could incriminate you. When asked the obligatory questions about steroids in baseball and the alleged use by Roger Clemens, Rodriguez managed to violate just about every one of the keys to an effective interview.

“Last year, I got tested 9 to 10 times,” he said. “We have a very, very strict policy, and I think the game is making tremendous strides.”

You what? As the New York Times story points out, 9-10 tests could be an indicator of positive tests; most players are only tested twice and additional tests are typically reserved for those who failed initial tests.

Fortunately, Rodriguez has a media relations director looking out for him, as he later explained that his initial statement was a matter of hyperbole. It was really 7-10 tests, he said.

Hmmmm. Looks like that foot is still pretty much lodged in there.

I think the real point is , he couldn't have tested positive or the whole world would know it by now.

I agree, that's how rumors get started.Truth is if you're tested 7-10 times and you're not punished for testing positive , then you didn't test positive. No matter what the New York Times THINKS, to say being tested 9-10 times means you COULD be testing positive is stupid. If you test positive you're punished plain and simple. Just ask Palmario.

well, if he hasn't gotten busted for it, I'd assume multiple tests have to do with his stature (you're lying if you think MLB wants to ensure A-Rod isn't caught) and the fact that he's probably toeing the line for steroids... it isn't just a steroids test

As much as I don't like A-Hole, I find nothing in his comments to suggest immediate 5 bell alarms that he is cheating by using PEDs.

Yeah, the point wasn't that I think he's a juicer; I have no idea, to be honest. It's just that his comments raise suspicion.

Hey, just watch guys in the next few months admit to taking HGH (just once mind you and of course for an injury) even if it ISN'T true! Apologizing for PED abuse is starting to become the hip thing in MLB!

Personally, I'd like to see amnesty for the guys...

Do you really care if Bonds or Clemens or Pettite is suspended for PEDs anymore...My opinion is not

But I would like to know and I do believe it should have an impact on the HoF for those who have a shot...but doesn't the pound of flesh have a time value that increases...

I'd rather take my whipping now, then have the guise over my career and life forever (Clemens).

Give everyone 30 days to come clean without punishment. If you don't, that's it and if you're caught, its 50 games...

The funny thing is that those named in the Mitchell Report and confessed their use of PEDs are already forgiven by and large from the public and moving forward in their lives/careers.

The only ones pissing in their pants are the liars attempting to duck Congress.

Fack'em.

Exactly, I'd give you more plusses if I could... You might as well take it like a man (Pettite). To me, its a great way to purge the issue in baseball and appease everyone. Fans are happy because they know and players are happy because they keep their paychecks...

IMO:

The landscape has changed on public perception of steroids and baseball.

Really, it has.

It is NOW not because guys like McGwire, Sosa, Palmeiro, Bonds, Clemens used steroids/PEDs that is destroying their legacies, HOF bids, etc. etc.

It is because they either ADMIT TO NOTHING, DOWNRIGHT LIE or REFUSE TO "TALK ABOUT THE PAST" that pisses off the public. And ironically, the Fed Government (see perjury consequences of Bonds and soon-to-be Roger Clemens)

Many see this standoffish attitude as a teflon attitude that these guys really believe they are above the rules.

The public WANTS their heroes to remain as..... uhhh heroes. And in America, the public FORGIVES the wrongdoings of those such said heroes.

But they don't want their heroes to LIE.

Now that jackasses such as Bonds and Clemens have drawn lines in the sand on this subject, the ugliness of this debate is only to grow.

The Mitchell Report gave the players an opportunity to speak on this subject. Those that did (Giambi), survived quite nicely in the aftermath of a comparatively small shit storm. Others that were implicated and admitted their guilt (Pettitte), have moved on.

George Mitchell encouraged everyone in his report to move forward and look to future improvements on preventing PED usage in baseball. But in no way, shape or form was that a suggestion to the players to LIE about their pasts.

These guys had their chances to come forward. So if a few liars get jammed up to "protect their legacies", I say throw the book at 'em. It serves a great lesson and deterrent.

I'd be surprised if anyone came out on their own and admitted hgh use.Being there isn't a test it's use is still probably rampid in MLB. Unless the trainers start squealing, and the smart ones probably self inject , nobody is going to out themselves.Too much to lose.

As much as I don't care for Mr. Rod, I do think that he's clean and it'll be a good day for the sport when he passes Bonds on the all-time home run list in 6 or 7 years.

First of all, you're right on with the passing of bonds TS...

But as far as the 04 ALCS...is that really any different than a Pass interference call in the NFL?

To put it in perspective, if that were you, would you be thinking "How can I get out of this?"...no, to me its just insticts...an illegal tactic he (the yanks) was punished for, but nothing I fault him for

There is to much focus on Bonds, Clemens, Sosa, etc... as far as I am concerned the only reason its such a big deal is due to media attention. Punnishing two or three people for performance enhancers in the MLB is like taking a cup of water out of the ocean; it doesnt ammount to anything! I firmly believe the majority of people in the majors have used some form of performance enhancer. And you know what? I still don't care. I still love baseball, I will continue to love it, and I will always cheer on my team. In my oppinion, Im tired of the political BS in sports, can we get back to the game!
