The most (blank) Olympics ever?

Michael Phelps is the most dominant swimmer ever. Canada is having the worst Olympics ever. The opening ceremonies were the most fake ever. Etc, etc, etc.

Seems like these, the 2008 Summer Olympics, are the most (blank) Olympics ever.

No matter where one looks, seeing or hearing about how dominant the Men’s swimming team is cannot be overlooked. And while they are doing exceptionally well, one wonders if the media – especially the US media – has gone more then a little overboard in their touting of Michael Phelps as the greatest ever.

Really, he is? Better then Jim Thorpe? How about Babe Dickerson? Are you telling me that because he has shattered records while wearing a swimsuit that dramatically cuts friction, because he has training regime that was unthinkable 20 years ago, because he has better dietary habits then any Olympic athlete before him…

Are you honestly saying with a straight face that he is the best ever?

True, he is shattering records. And yes, he has gone undefeated thus far in the Olympics. His team had a dramatic come-from-behind win over France a few nights ago.

But is it really fair to say he’s better then Jesse Owens? He succeeded in harsher times, with less training, less-advanced equipment and under more pressure - the middle of Nazi Germany in 1936. A country where he couldn’t sit on a bus wherever he wanted? Where he was called an ape by the national press?

Did you really think that the US was under any kind of pressure when they beat the French a couple days ago? That’s not pressure. Jesse Owens winning in Nazi Germany was pressure. Mark Spitz competing in Munich after Israeli athletes were abducted and killed was pressure. If only they just had some trash talk directed at them.

A less pressing topic, Canada’s fruitless Olympics. No medals yet, behind countries such as China, the United States and the Netherlands. This could go down as Canada’s worst summer Olympics ever, one supposes.

But it’s not a huge deal. For a country of our size and population, competing with China or the US is entirely the wrong idea. They have more money, more people – more talent, if only by sheer numbers.

Besides. Canada has never been much of a summer games country. Only once has Canada won more then 20 medals (the 1984 Olympics don’t really count because of the Soviet boycott which resulted in over 400 people representing the country, a number that is rarely approached since then).

No, Canada should be comparing itself to countries like Morocco or Kenya, countries with similar populations. To Belgium or Austria, which have similar GDP. To Finland or the Netherlands, which have similar total medal counts. They should be the competition, if Canada really needs one.

A more superficial matter, the opening ceremonies and the seats. Two girls, one ceremony, as it were. Does it matter that one girl lip-synced and the other sang? Or that the firework display was a CGI production? Only about as much as the other falsehoods in China, and perhaps less.

The internet sites are blocked by the Chinese government are blocked because they make China look bad. Rules recently put into effect – no spitting, keep it quiet, etc – are to keep China from looking bad.

Basically, China is an insecure country with an image problem. All these creations from the opening ceremony, as well as the problem with nobody getting to the games, stem from this. China doesn’t ever want to look bad, especially not to it’s own people and especially when the whole world is watching.

But does it ultimately matter? One would assume that no, it does not. It means nothing at the end of the day. What does matter are actions of consequence – if their athletes are clean, of legal age and the like. That matters – it cheats people out of a medal.

You could say it’s the most pressing Olympic issue ever.

You have some valid points, but you sure take a lot away from phelps, which is incredibly unfair...you're giving all the credit to "technological doping" and advanced lifestyles (to that of his predecessors) and yet no respect to what he's done...

He's beating the pants off all his competition and all of them (the serious ones being the french, australians, South Africans, etc) all have the same advantages...swim suits, diets, access to coaching, etc...Spitz put it best earlier this morning; "Everyone has the same advantages"

and he's still significantly better

You mention how he didn't face the adversity spitz did...Phelps is in China, in a world stage that certainly has animosity towards americans and a recent stabbing death. Nevermind the increased scrutiny on Phelps versus...well...any olympic athlete before him

Nevermind the United States (and many other leader countries) not dedicating entire lives of children to a sport, unlike that of china

You can debate whether phelps is the best swimmer or athlete or whatever, but its just insulting to downplay his accomplishments

I don't mean to rip on Phelps, but I do think he's getting a little too much credit. In all sports - but perhaps in the Olympics most - you have to put things in context: Babe Ruth hit 714 home runs, but he never had to face black players. Wayne Gretzky scored 802 goals, but he played in the highest scoring era of the NHL.

I fully respect what he's done. WInning as many gold medals as he has is no easy feat. But it's grossly unfair to say what he's doing now is better then anybody before him. He may be the best swimmer ever, but is he the greatest ever? How do you quantify what he does against somebody else - like Jim Thorpe, Jesse Owens, Babe Didrikson or Mark Spitz?

I don't know if you can, at least objectively.

And in regards to animosity, what happened in Munich was much, much worse then anything that's happened since. Jewish athletes abducted, kidnapped and then murdered for no good reason at all - and as the most visible Jew on team USA, Spitz was watched like a hawk for his own safety. That's why he didn't attend the closing ceremonies.

Its impossible to compare (you know this)

And its an age old sports question...you could make these comments about anyone.

But its quantified by winning...Tiger woods is/has blown away his competition.

Phelps is the winningest Olympian ever. He's defeated his peers at the highest levels more times than any other person has (their own peers)...and he's not done this year...or for his career...

Your claim is the same reason people don't declare Rocky Marciano the greatest boxer ever...problem with swimming is, there's so few experts (who provide national news/columns) that we've got little to compare (or understand)...

But Phelps is easily one of the greatest olympians ever (he's got the hardware) and he's not done...

Most sports fans today, specifically those of a younger generation, associate greatness to the athlete's material accomplishments. Tom Brady's a better QB than Dan Marino because he has more rings. Steve Nash is overrated because he has none.

Discussions about Michael Phelps being the greatest ever have little regard to his ability as a swimmer. It's about the number of medals he has. Put Mark Spitz in a time machine, make him 23 years old, give him Phelps' training routine, who is to say Spitz still wouldn't be better.

Put a 30 year old Tiger Woods in 1965, with the same equipment and conditions as a 30 year old Jack or Arnie, would he win 30% of the tournaments he enters? I think not.

Watching Phelps, or the Chinese divers, or womens' basketball is anti-climactic. We know before we turn on the TV they're going to win. We watch because we want to know by how much.

Prediction: Ryan Lochte will win gold in the 200M IM.

Another factor to consider, at least in any attempt to compare Phelps to other Olympians who compete in other events: number of opportunities. One of the primary reasons he is being talked up as the greatest Olympians of all time is his medal count. But is it fair to use that as a yardstick when Phelps will compete for eight medals while others only compete for one?
This is not meant to take anything away from Phelps--he has dominated a very good field. But this is a G.O(lympian).A.T. comparison that doesn't need to be made.

Regarding Ruth: other white ballplayers weren't facing integrated pitching, but none of them could hit anywhere near as many homers as Ruth.

Regarding Gretzky: Similar argument. Although he played in a high offense era, his offense was the highEST. He led the NHL in scoring 10 times and took home 9 MVP Awards. It may have been easier for him to amass goals and points, but he still did it better than any of his contemporaries.

And the same can be said for Phelps. The world records are falling because of the suits and the training. I've seen events in which 4th and 5th place have beaten the record time. But Phelps is still dominating his competition. He isn't winning because of the suit, he's winning because he's better than the other guys in the pool with him.

It appears that you are referring to the past up until now and not into the future in that sentence. I agree that ever is widely abused, which was the point of this article. When you used "used in the olympics" you quantified "ever", limiting it to just the past and present. A sentence like: "They used the widest pool ever." would be an irresponsible way to use "ever". I didn't elaborate on my first comment, but my point was that the context greatly affects the meaning of the word "ever".

Upgraded? or specialized? Sometimes advantages aren't so clear cut.

No one seems to take into account that Phelps is winning and breaking records in the widest, deepest pool ever used in the olympics, either. I'm only an amatuer physicist but my education in fluid dynamics tells me that waves dissipate over greater depths and lengths more easily than at shorter and shallower because the energy is transferred over a greater volume.

Meaning - when 8 guys all swimn in one direction, then turn around to swim against the current they just created, a bigger pool will spread that energy further creating LESS resistance...

Maybe it's NOT just the suits?

The SEXIEST Olympics ever. Or the most SEXY Olympics ever, however you prefer.

They have been all about what is on the surface, what people see, and what China/the media want us to see. It's all about images. Not a lot of people are going to remember Jason Lezak in five years, but everyone is going to recognize that picture of Phelps screaming like a mad man. Everyone enjoyed the lovely picture of the Georgian and Russian athletes on the medal stand, while the two countries began a war. We're all up in arms about how young the Chinese gymnasts look, yet no one will discuss how graceful they are and how well they performed.

It's all about the look. These Games can have all the personality in the world, but they wouldn't be nearly as successful if there wasn't a concerted effort by China and the media to put a beautiful face on them.

B) With the Olympics being in (essentially) an opposite time zone, it really works out well to broadcast events both live (for those on the net and working non 9-5) and on delay (for primetime)

C) I mean, if you're concerned about missing you're favorite Universal network or USA Network TV show, I can understand, but otherwise, you're not really missing anything you wouldn't have watched anyways

My old man would say that Michael is on the same level as Jesse. Both faced unbelievable odds to do what they had to do. But Michael is having to swim 17 races in a small amount of days. Jesse only had to compete in the 4 events and it is hardly doing the same thing as Michael. Both were at the top of their games and it is a interesting conception to come up with Michael isn't in the same league as Jesse. My old man is fishing back home for the next two weeks but I will have him look at this article and maybe give you a birds eye view of both the events and individuals. He meant Jesse Owens a number of times over the course of the following years after the 1936d games. According to my dad, Jesse was an extra ordinary individual and a very special person.dd Owens didn't have to contend with the media in the amounts that are following Micheal on a day to day or really minute to minute ordeal, so it is maybe within reason to compare the two only with what they did on the field of play. Four for four and maybe Eight for Eight, but even if he doesn't get 8 what he has done stands out as the greatest sports achievement is the history of the Olympic Games.

Besides, if they DIDN'T try to make every event the biggest EVER, what would they do? Be creative? Originality is unfamiliar to the majority of the audience, and familiarity is what breeds success. Rehash, repackage and rehash - New old, same old. "Hey we know that, so we like it!"

It's laziness and irresponsibility on behalf of the media, but they don't care - they gets paid.

I remember when I was an 18 year old kid experimenting with every form of booze known to mankind, you couldn't buy Coors anywhere. We had to drive to Brewster, NY to a distributorship there and buy it off the truck. We'd go down with a UHaul and load up the bitch.

Admitting you drove to get Coors is like admitting you liked Yentl. Some things you just don't do!

Back then, actually having to drive to get it was the thrill, and at 18-19 years old, there's no such thing as bad beer. Ever try Carling Black Label?

Hey Mabel... If we're going for UK lagers, I'd vote Tennants.

"Hey Mabel, Black Label" was a popular slogan for Carling.

Wow, that's right!! Good memory.... The only thing I remember about Black Label is the taste. I think that's where the term, "weasel piss" orginated.

And some beer is better than none.

I can't get Yuengling out here =(

("All beer is good"? Sorry. I'd rather drink my own piss than a Anheuser-Busch product.)

I never thought I'd like a Black and Tan in a bottle, but Yuengling's is darn good.

Yes, JuT, they even sell the Yang at Tropicana Field. Needless to say I snuck more than several into the press box during my expedition with the Rays. I'd take a plastic (non-see through) cup from the press box out to the concourse (I prefer mingling with the fans more than the press anyway - it's my angle) and buy a Yang and switch cups (don't forget the lid!). It's easy to slip a press pass into your pocket when you don't go with the dorky lanyard and even easier when no one except the security staff (that I greased up with kindness and feigned interest early on) recognizes you.

When all else fails - vodka looks great in a water bottle and captain morgan passes easily for tea!

That's your "Manny Stiles how-to-get-tanked-in-the-press-box-with-no-suspicion tip of the day"!
