The Truth about the 2007 New England Patriots

There is something that has said over and over both here, and in the media about the 07 Pats. Something that is so blatantly false despite both common belief and perception that I too was convinced that it was true until I decided to look it up myself.

The 2007 Patriots are not that bad of a rushing team. Seriously. This is not another rambling by a senseless pats fan (though some of you think I am a sesnseless pats fan, but that's besides the point.) This is an objective look at what turns out to be a commonly accepted lie.

Exhibit A

Here is the rushing stats for all 32 NFL teams, courtesy of NFL.com:

Interesting to note here that the pats are 8th out of all 12 playoff teams in terms of rushing, especially considering that Indy, Green Bay, and Dallas are below them. I think that this is extremely important, as if the pats lack of a running game hurts their Super Bowl chances, imagine what it should mean for the Packers, who are the worst playoff team in terms of running, and they too have to endure the hardships that come from playing in the cold. Assuming that the Pats and Colts meet in Foxboro to determine the AFC representative in the Super Bowl, they too would have to endure the cold. So why is it that the pats get the bad rep for the running game, when of the teams in the playoffs not playing this weekend, they have the best running game?

Now, the next thing I though of after this was that some of you would pull the Sammy Morris card on me. He was thriving as the Running Back early, but when he went down, so did the Pats running game, right? Wrongwrongwrongwrongwrong.

This Screenshot also takes care of another myth. That being the one that this year's pats rushing game is worse than it has been in previous years.

I now turn to...........

Exhibit B

In case you didn't pick up on it, the 07 pats are having their third best season rushing since 2001 in yards per game. For those of you who are TD friendly stat geeks (coughdaviscough), the 07 pats are having their second best season since 2001. In terms of ranking in the NFL, the 07 Pats were tied for the third highest ranked team in terms of rushing since 2001.

And Maroney and Morris are/were having almost identical seasons statistically.

So what does this all mean? The Pats are for real, and their rushing game is as strong as it has been in their recent success run. It also means that everyone who thinks that the pats will lose because they can't run the ball need a new excuse for hating the pats.

haters is a very general term in my book. It generally refers to skeptics. And maybe AGM doesn't feel this way, but the mass media certainly does

Look, it's easy to be a decent rushing team because every defense is expecting the pass.

Nice chart, FP. I'm actually a bit surprised, because there is actually no change at all. So the addition and subsequent impact on Randy Moss' on the passing game can't be overlooked. If YPG and Attempts and TD's are virtually the same, but the Pat's set NFL records in scoring and touchdowns then the run did in fact set up the pass, which is the way football is designed to be played.

The beauty of stats is that you can make them show whatever you want them to show. Give me a chart that lists the best rushing teams after Week 7, and it would look very different.

"I think that this is extremely important, as if the pats lack of a running game hurts their Super Bowl chances, imagine what it should mean for the Packers, who are the worst playoff team in terms of running, and they too have to endure the hardships that come from playing in the cold."

I don't know if you heard, but the Packers just ran the ball for over 200 yards in the cold.

Any team should blitz Brady the first 10 times they have. They have to get into Brady's face and come up with a sack immediately, and/or a fumble, and/or an interception. If they can pressure Brady in the beginning and rattle him they have a chance.

Yeah - Bc Brady has really soon a propensity toward "rattling". Has he been perfect all career? Nope, last year his INT sealed the loss, vs the Broncs his play contributed to their loss. But that is not "rattling". That is making mistakes as all big players have done and do - as they are trying to win the game.

blitz's cause those mistakes genius...

Look at the teams that came close to beating the pats this year...they blitzed very well, played tough pass defense and made every effort to hit brady...and it was successful...

it was also too bad those offenses were led by the likes of AJ Feeley, Kyle Boller and Eli Manning...

its almost like you're saying that there is no way to beat the pats, which is untrue...

The bottom line is that you must execute well to beat the pats...they're a good team, but as beatable as any other good team...

"Imagine what it should mean for the Packers, who are the worst playoff team in terms of running" That takes into account the entire season, before Ryan Grant stepped into the starting role, and shelled out multiple 100 yard rushing games. I'd like to see the statistics from the second half of the year before you claim Green Bay's running game is in trouble.

Note to all: There have been multiple users ask for second half stats. However, I have yet to find a site that has either week by week statistics, or statistics through a certain week. THe only way to do it would be to manually go through the boxscores week by week and add them up for each team, which I am in no mood to do. I will continue looking, and publish whatever I can fine

Even without second half stats I feel the Cowboys with Barber and Jones, the Colts with Addai and Grant in Green Bay pose a greater threat to the opposition than Maroney despite the yards per game over the season

I told you guys a few weeks ago, they were sandbagging the running game until the playoffs. They had to tip there hand a little early though, but the strategy will still work. The entire NFL has the Patriots down as a Pass First team and come game time next weekend they will be a run first team and it will be halftime before the other team puts the 8th man in the box and then MVP goes wild in the 2nd half. After Morris got injured they kept Maroney under wraps giving him limited action because if he got injured it would be all passing all the time for the Pats and even they aren't that good. Maroney's legs are fresh and he will be a beast for three games, I promise.

I concur. That makes no sense. That's would be like saying you have an undefeated UFC fighter and telling me that he has no weaknesses, even if I kick him in the balls.
