The Tomahawk Times - Roster move forthcoming, Carlyle back with big club

MIAMI -- With the Atlanta Braves pitching staff in somewhat of a state of flux, the Richmond Times-Dispatch is reporting that the club has already recalled right-handed starting pitcher Buddy Carlyle from their Triple-A Richmond affiliate. The move was made following Richmond's 3-1 loss to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Tuesday.

The Braves are hoping that Tom Glavine will be able to make his scheduled start over the weekend, after being forced to depart with a strained hamstring after just 16 pitches on Sunday. Glavine is still listed as day-to-day and plans to throw on the side to assess the next step.

If the Braves have to place Glavine on the 15-day disabled list, Carlyle would likely fill that void, at least in the short term. There remains the possibility that the move could be unrelated to Glavine's condition.

Carlyle, 30, was in contention for the fifth starter's spot during the spring before being beaten out by Jair Jurrjens. In two starts this season with Richmond, Carlyle has no record and a 7.04 ERA in seven and two thirds innings pitching.

During 2007, Carlyle became a mainstay in the Braves rotation, going 8-7 in 20 starts (22 appearances overall) with a 5.22 ERA. Carlyle enjoyed the best month of his career in July of last season, posting a 3-1 record and a 3.23 ERA while walking just four men in five starts (30.2 IP) for the month.
