The Tomahawk Times - Nationals Open Park in Style, Beat Braves 3-2

The Least You Need To Know: Despite a late rally by the Atlanta Braves, the Washington Nationals opened their new ballpark with a 3-2 win, courtesy of Ryan Zimmerman's walk-off home run.

Game 1: ATL @ WAS

The Braves trailed most of the game after Tim Hudson allowed 2 runs in the first inning, but Hudson righted the ship quickly after his early struggles -- he went on to retire every batter he faced from the 2nd inning on. Atlanta cut into Washington's lead in the 4th, when Chipper Jones provided a solo home run to make it a 2-1 game, but for the most part they struggled to get on base against Nationals pitchers Odalis Perez, Saul Rivera, Ray King, and Luis Ayala... Until the top of the 9th inning, that is. With 1 out, Mark Teixeira doubled to right and Bobby Cox put pinch runner Martin Prado on second. After Jeff Francoeur moved the runner to third on a groundout, Paul Lo Duca let Jon Rauch's pitch go past him to the backstop, allowing Prado to score and tie the game at 2. The tie was short-lived, though: after retiring Cristian Guzman and Lastings Milledge in the bottom of the 9th, Peter Moylan served up a fat pitch that Ryan Zimmerman deposited in the center field bleachers at shiny new Nationals Park, giving Washington a 3-2 victory.

Next For The Braves

The Braves will fly back to Atlanta for their own home opener tomorrow, kicking off a 3-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Then they'll play host to the mighty New York Mets on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

I can sense an amazing game a mile away... maybe even 5,000 miles away. How amazing is Ryan Zimmerman? He's hit a bunch of walk-off homers already. This has gotta be his 4th... at least. David Ortiz... watch out. 2 outs, down by 1... how clutch is Zimmerman!? What a way to start off the season for the Nationals. 161 to go.

It was a good game, a bit of a pitchers' duel. I was feeling conflicted all game, since Zim, Hudson, Ayala, and McCann are all on my fantasy team -- I didn't know who to root for! In the end, Huddy pitched really well after a rough 1st and Zim hit the walk-off shot, so things worked out pretty good for me at least. :)

Just to let everyone know, I checked, and Zimmerman has hit 4 walk-off homers so far out of 8 GW situations he's been in (3 singles, 1 walk (compared to David Ortiz's 11 HRs out of 16 GW hits). AND HE'S ONLY 23!

So if the Nats and Braves play .500 ball the rest of the season, Washington will actually finish ahead of Atlanta for the year? I'm just sayin'...

No, the Padres could have avoided that situation entirely if they had won a few more games earlier in the season. It's about all 162, not just 1.

So, at least for one day, I was right. Ryan Zimmerman, best 3Bman in the NL East.

Hey, Zim's on my fantasy team, I think he's great, but David Wright would definitely disagree. And so would I.

Put Zimmerman on the Mets and he would put up better numbers than Wright. Shit, Mario Mendoza would put up Wright's numbers batting between Beltran and Reyes and Delgado.

Right. And put Neifi Perez on the Yankees and suddenly he's a better-fielding version of Derek Jeter...

That was great for the Nationals franchise. First ever game in their new park (a new era) and they start it off with a win on a walk-off home run from their franchise player...

anyone else notice the extremely shakey response Bush received before throwing out the first pitch? He's got a nice fastball though. btw, looks like a nice ballpark down in DC

I was quite impressed with the new ballpark. RFK was a dump! It was forced on them. I will shed no tears when they blow the place up. Granted, it's not Turner Field but then again, when a team wants to build a new place to play, who do they look at? Yep, you guessed it. I did notice some booing, Falcon. He did run (or try to run) the Rangers... look at how well that turned out. That team is the only team in baseball to NOT win a postseason game. My hats off to the Nationals.

Braves have to play better than this if Peter Gammons is picking them to win the World Series...the bullpen has lost two games for them now.
