The Tomahawk Times - Glavine hurt, Braves fall to Cubs 10-5

CHICAGO -- Another close game took a turn for for the worse in the late innings for the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, as the Chicago Cubs scored four times in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure a 10-5 win in the first of a three game series at Wrigley Field.

To make matters worse for the Braves, starter Tom Glavine (2-3) was forced to leave the game and will miss at least one start with a strained left elbow. Glavine allowed four runs on six hits and four walks in just three innings of work.

Ted Lilly (6-5) picked up the win for Chicago, overcoming a three-run first inning by Atlanta to go six and two thirds innings and earn his first win since May 19.

A three-run homer off the bat of Greg Norton was all the Braves could muster off Lilly, who struck out eight men and retired a string of 11 straight hitters following a lead-off triple by Omar Infante in the second.

Braves reliever Manny Acosta was battered for the third time in four appearances, surrendering a three-run homer to Giovanni Soto among five runs allowed (two earned) in an inning and two thirds worth of work. Since May 31, a span of five appearances, Acosta has allowed 12 runs in four and a third innings, including four home runs.

The Cubs impoved their National League best home record to 27-8, while the Braves fall to a Major League worst 7-22 away from Turner Field. The loss also drops Atlanta under .500 (32-33) on the season.

Chipper Jones appeared as a pinch-hitter and drew a walk against Lilly in the seventh, but was replaced by a pinch-runner. The Braves hope to have Jones back in the line-up as early as Wednesday.

On Deck: Atlanta sends Jair Jurrjens tp the mound against Ryan Dempster on Wednesday, hoping to even the series at one game a piece. Game time is set for 8:05 PM EST.

Braves are not the same team without Jones but hope he can play everyday after missing so many games lately.
