The Tomahawk Times - Chipper belts 400th homer, Braves win 7-5

ATLANTA -- It was a historic night for baseball at Turner Field on Thursday, as Chipper Jones became the 43rd player in big league history to reach the 400 home run club with a sixth inning blast off Ricky Nolasco in a 7-5 Atlanta victory.

Jones is enjoying the finest start to any season of his 15-year career in 2008. A 4-for-5 night at the plate raised his average to .418 on the year, the best mark in all of baseball.

The Braves overcame a four-run Florida fourth inning, with Jair Jurrjens (6-3) gutting his way through six inning to earn the win. Jurrjens allowed all five Marlins runs on 11 hits, walking two and striking out four.

Brian McCann put Atlanta on top to stay with his two-run homer in the fifth inning off Nolasco (5-4). It was one of three homers allowed by Nolasco, who went five and two thirds innings and allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits.

Atlanta also got a homer from Yunel Escobar, his sixth on the season, and RBI's from Mark Teixeira and Jeff Francoeur to round out the scoring barrage.

Getting a start in left after Greg Norton was a late scratch, Josh Anderson went 1-for-3 with his first career triple. Anderson is now batting .308 in his first seven games since being recalled from Triple-A Richmond on May 30.

Rafael Soriano threw a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his third save of the season, following scoreless frames from Royce Ring and Jeff Bennett to pave the way.

Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez wasted littled time getting the Marlins on the board, driving the first pitch of the game from Jurrjens over the right centerfield wall for his 12th homer of the year.

On Deck: The Braves will welcome the Philadelphia Phillies for a three game series that begins on Friday. Tim Hudson will be on the mound to make the start opposite Jamie Moyer of the Phillies. Game time is set for 7:30 PM EST.
