The Tomahawk Times - Byrnes' slam keys D-Backs 9-3 win over Braves

ATLANTA -- The Arizona Diamondbacks broke out the lumber for the second time in three days, with Eric Byrnes connecting for a fifth inning grand slam that sent Tom Glavine the Atlanta Braves to an 9-3 loss on Sunday.

A lead-off homer by Chris Young on the second pitch of the day was the start of a two-run inning for Arizona. Chris Snyder chipped in a sacrifice fly that scored Orlando Hudson before Glavine was able to escape the inning with a strikeout of Byrnes.

The Braves went to work on Micah Owings in the second, scoring twice to tie things up at 2-2. Omar Infante laced the Braves fourth straight single to bring home the first run. Owings walked Yunel Escobar with the bases loaded to account for the other run in the inning.

In the third inning, Justin Upton misplayed Jeff Francoeur's liner to right for a two-base error that allowed the Braves to take a 3-2 lead into the fifth.

Byrnes' bases loaded blast spelled the end of the day for Glavine (2-2), who lasted just four and two thirds and allowed six earned runs on five hits and a season-high six walks. It is just the second grand slam allowed by Glavine in his 22-year career.

Owings (6-2) squandered the early lead but settled down to go six innings and allow three runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out three.

Brian McCann was forced to leave the game in the 8th with what the team called "heat related symptons." He is not expected to miss further playing time.

On Deck: This series concludes with a Memorial Day matinee on Monday, with Jair Jurrjens taking on Brandon Webb in the fourth and final game. Game time is set for 1:10 PM EST.

Glavine just can't seem to get into the 7th inning this season. In 9 starts he has pitched into the 7th inning only twice. Great matchup today with Webb and Jurrjens. Hope Chipper can play today.

Chipper's in there and the first two innings have the Braves ahead 5-1 over Brandon Webb. What a difference one man makes, altering the opponents entire game strategy.
