The Tomahawk Times - Bruce, Reds take game from Braves in 11th, win 3-2

CINCINNATI -- Heralded rookie outfielder Jay Bruce collected four hits and scored the game winning run in the 11th inning on a Chipper Jones error, as the Cincinnati Reds grabbed a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday.

Neither Edinson Volquez nor Tom Glavine were around to figure in the decision. Both hurlers went six innnings and allowed two runs on five hits. Volquez fanned seven while Glavine answered with five of his own.

The Braves scored single runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Mark Teixeira delivered a sacrifice fly in the sixth to score Kelly Johnson with the game's first run. Atlanta scored their only other run in the seventh when pinch-hitter Ruben Gotay bounced into a double play.

Cincinnati pushed two across in the sixth against Glavine. Bruce doubled in their first run and then scored on a sacrifice fly to give the Reds a brief 2-1 lead.

The game remained in a 2-2 tie into the 11th inning. With Royce Ring (1-1) on in relief, Bruce singled to open the frame. Ken Griffey Jr. followed with a bad hop single through Jones to give the Reds two men on and bring the Atlanta infield in.

Brandon Phillips promptly smoked a line drive through Jones and into left field to bring in Bruce with the game winning run and put the cap on a very frustrating game for Jones and the Braves.

Bruce owned the night, collecting three of his four hits against Glavine and notching the first four-hit performance in his young career. Bruce is now hitting .571 (8-for-14) in his first four games in the Majors.

On the other side, Jones had one of the most frustrating games of the season, going 0-for-5 and bouncing into a pair of double plays in addition to being charged with a game-ending error on Phillips liner.

The one-run games continue to go against Atlanta, with Friday's loss making then 0-12 in one run contests on the road and dropping their record to a dismal 6-18 in road games this season.

Not only did the Braves suffer yet another one-run defeat, but they also lost center fielder Mark Kotsay to the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain. Kotsay is the second Atlanta outifelder to go on the DL in the last three days, joining Matt Diaz, who could miss up to six weeks with a slight tear in the posterior cruciate ligament of his left knee.

On Deck: Atlanta will send their own rookie phenom, right-hander Jair Jurrjens, to the mound against Josh Fogg of the Reds as they seek to even the series on Saturday. Game time is set for 3:55 PM EST,
