ATLANTA -- Always looking for ways to add depth, the Atlanta Braves agreed to terms with versatile veteran Scott Spiezio, signing him to a minor league deal and assigning him to Triple-A Richmond of the International League.

Spiezio, 35, made his Major League debut in 1996 for the Oakland Athletics and has played for four clubs in his career. St. Louis opted to release Spiezio this spring following an incident off the field that had occured during the off-season.

"After talkikng with Scott his past weekend and meeting with him this afternoon, we feel he is sincere in his contrition and we are willing to give him a second chance," said Braves general manager Frank Wren.

The bat of Spiezio may be the much discussed veteran pinch-hitter that the club believed they were lacking toward the end of spring. During his 12 year career, Spiezio has served as an infielder and outfielder, hitting .255 with 119 homers and 549 RBI in 1274 games.

"I am very appreciative of the second chance I've been given," said Spiezio in an official statement issued by the team. "The Braves have made no promise to me, except to give me the opportunity to prove that I have made amends and that I can still perform at this level."

Spiezio will work out with the Rome Braves on Tuesday before joining the Richmond club on Wednesday.

He better be sincere or he's gone. Atlanta ran Isaiah Rider out of town, so he better have his ducks in a row.

Further proof the Braves dynasty, and way of doing things, has changed. The "old" Braves would never have signed him, too much baggage. Disappointing, to say the least.

Sometimes a second chance is always warranted, but we all need one from time to time. Spiezio's bat could prove valuable if he is over his off-field issues.

True. Let's hope that he has his life back in tact. He's too good a player to do something as stupid as that. After all, the Braves did stand by Furcal after his DUI conviction.

Surprised Bobby Cox would OK the deal if he had any input. Guess if he is called up that will mean Prado is headed back to minors.

Speizo's a nice insurance policy i suppose...there's essentially no risk here and Speizio is a pretty solid utility infielder... although, the braves already have Yunel Escobar who can play every position this side of catching and pitching...
