The Tomahawk Times - Braves place Moylan on 15-day disabled list

MIAMI -- The Atlanta Braves were forced to add right-handed reliever Peter Moylan to the list of injured hurlers this season. Moylan was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain on Tuesday.

Moylan originally felt some discomfort in his pitching elbow during Friday's outing against the Washington Nationals, when he recorded his first save of the season.

"He couldn't have thrown any better when he closed that game out on Friday in Washington," said Braves manager Bobby Cox. "The next morning, he woke up and had an elbow full of fluid and could not straighten it out."

Moylan flew back to Atlanta on Sunday and was diagnosed with a strained elbow after undergoing a battery of tests including an MRI. The Braves would like Moylan to get a second opinion from renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday before charting a course of action.

Atlanta called up right-hander Buddy Carlyle to take Moylan's spot on the roster and serve the team in relief for now. Carlyle also provides insurance for the starting rotation with Tom Glavine nursing a hamstring injury.

Moylan carries an 0-1 record on the season, but has not been scored upon since opening day, when Ryan Zimmerman victimized him for a game-winning homerun. Over his past six appearances, Moylan has allowed just four hits and recorded his first save of the season in Friday's win over Washington.

With Moylan out of action, the Braves will likely turn to Manny Acosta to assume the closer's duties. Atlanta manager Bobby Cox had planned to use both Moylan and Acosta for save opportunities with Rafael Soriano already on the disabled list. Cox indicated that Blaine Boyer and Will Ohman may see some chances as well.

"We'll piece it together and see what happens till Soriano gets back," said Cox. "Whatever it takes to win, that's what we'll do for the next nine or 10 days."

Acosta, who is just two weeks shy of his 27th birthday, was battered around by Pittsburgh in his initial outing this season as well. Since then, he has registered four scoreless outings and allowed just two hits while striking out three. Acosta registered 12 saves and nine wins for Richmond last season before joining the Atlanta in mid-August.

I was fairly certain Moylan was going to be their closer, now they have to turn to Acosta...could be a rough couple of weeks for the Bravos...their Pen wasn't all that scary to begin with...

No doubt about it. Moylan was more or less the steady influence of a year ago and was going to be counted on big time with Soriano down. This changes everything.

thanks for the updated news. I went and grabbed Acosta on one of my fantasy leagues. Unfortunately he was picked up last week in the other ones.
