As Seen on The 3rd String Safety
ESPN Page 2 Columnist Art Garfamudis wrote a column today which discounting Money Ball because of Catcher Jeremy Brown's retirement.
Brown was an overweight catcher, but a good college player leading Oakland A's General Manager to draft him. He was a key figure in the book, and became a figurehead for the SABRmetric movement. The problem was, he just never devolped into anything. So, obviously every player who scouts have ever called a "5-tool" player has developed, right?
Wrong. For every Alex Rodriguez, there is a Dallas McPherson. For Every Felix Hernandez, there is a Mark Prior.
The point is that no system is ever going to be able to scout every single player correctly. That would take all the fun out of it. The idea that Moneyball is discredited because one player didn't pan out is absurd.
Because for every Jeremy Brown, There is a Nick Swisher.
