The Ryan Leaf Fiasco: 10 Years Later

The year 1998. It's the NFL draft and the greased hair assassin and the gang are already to make their last minute projections, get burned on national television and then say its the teams fault. The draft this year featured 2 franchise quarterbacks, Washington State's Ryan Leaf and Tennessee's Peyton Manning. Manning was the projected top pick, but Kiper said Leaf had a mental advantage over Manning. The Indianapolis Colts had the first pick, as Kiper predicted back in 1994 (how dare they pass up Trent Dilfer), The Arizona Cardinals had the second pick but the San Diego Chargers traded two first-round picks, a second-round pick, reserve linebacker Patrick Sapp and four-time Pro Bowler Eric Metcalf [1] just to move up one spot to #2 to ensure they got in on one of these "once in a lifetime QBs".

Peyton went first, to no one's surprise, and the Chargers snatched Leaf. Following the draft, the Chargers signed Leaf to a four-year contract worth 31.25 million, including a guaranteed $11.25 million signing bonus. It was, at the time, the largest signing bonus ever paid to a rookie. Shortly after being drafted, Leaf declared, "I'm looking forward to a 15 year career, a couple of trips to the Super Bowl and a parade through downtown San Deigo.....

So now the Aftermath

  • Peyton over his 10 year career would go on to win 1.5 MVPs, a Superbowl, on pace to shatter every passing record in the game and has appeared in 2948 commercials
  • Leaf over his 5 year career (15 years....how ironic) has been regarded as the biggest bust in NFL draft history, was featured in a Simpsons episode, is the quarterbacks coach and head men's golf coach for Texas A&M University...err I mean West Texas A&M University and has a movie on his horrible career coming out.
  • Mel Kiper's "credibility" survived the hit and would go on to declare Cincinnati Bengals' Akili Smith as the best passer they have since Boomer Esiason in 1995 (turned out to be biggest bust since Leaf), The Patriots would go 0-16 in 2001 (they would win a Super Bowl that year) but not to worry the "do" is still good
  • The Colts would land another top 5 pick the following year, Edgerrin James from the U, they would win 13 games that season and has since become a perennial playoff contender.
  • The Chargers would go on to have 5 consecutive sub .500 seasons, notably their drafting strategies changed trading their #1 pick in 2001 to the Atlanta Falcons for 2 first rounders and a 2nd rounder the next year, those picks would become Former NFL MVP Ladainian Tomlinson, QB Drew Brees and Kick Returner Tim Dwight. They would land another #1 pick in 2004, drafting Eli Manning and trading him to the New York Giants for Phillip Rivers. Eli would win a Super Bowl three years later but hey can't win them all.
  • The Cardinals, who dodged the bullet that was Ryan Leaf have failed to become relevant still...

A good, amusing summary of a nutty QB collapse. I was fine not remembering much about Leaf! :-) The Colts definitely did all right. And the Chargers recovered. I can't believe that Leaf is a QB coach. Would you want your young passers to be influenced by him?? And Kiper - does anyone besides the denizens of ESPN listen to him anymore?

Leaf was good when he had five WR's running patterns ,and only had to throw 10yds. That would not be too hard to teach to other college QB's.

This would also continue the tradition of Wazzu players bombing in the NFL.

Drew Bledsoe went to WSU. I won't call his career a bomb

Bledsoe ranks 5th in Completions and Attempts, 7th in Passing Yards and 13th in Touchdowns. That's not a bad career at all.

You never mentioned his playoff performances or interceptions thrown though.

That postseason knock could be applied to many non Wazzu QBs that are hall of famers. Marino, Elway and Jim Kelly come to mind. It's not all bad, but it doesn't tell the whole tale. Bledsoe's numbers are pretty good.

SS, I'm not arguing for Bledsoe to be in the Hall or saying his is the greatest quarterback. I am simply saying that he has had an extremely productive career. You say everyone coming out of Wazzou has bombed in the NFL. Ranking 7th in passing yards in your career is far from bombing even if he has had all those interceptions.

For a first overall pick, I would argue that Bledsoe was a bit of a bust...

Bledsoe was not great but there is no way you can call him anything less than very good. Make fun of him all you want, but he was a solid starter and a class act. That and being his back-up was a blessing!

Pip, I agree, but the number 1 overall pick should not just be "very good". If he's anything short of great, he should be considered a bust.

I'm not sure I agree with this. It's a crap shoot no matter how you slice it. There's no guarantee. At least Bledsoe wasn't an ass. He was the QB of a team in the Super Bowl. I'm not sure how much more you can ask of your #1 draft choice. Luck is a big factor. One wonders what would have become of Tom Brady if Bledsoe had not been injured?

And an intangible: Bledsoe buys Dunkin Donuts for his movers. That's all you need to know about him as a person.

Bledsoe shouldn't even be mentioned on a page about Ryan Leaf

The story of Ryan Leaf, such a tragic tail. He will never be able to live down what he failed to do for the Chargers. Leaf and A. Smith just teach us that you need to watch more than 1 seasons worth of film on a guy before you grant him as the second coming.

Who said Rodgers is the second coming? He fell all the way to 24th. Obviously teams didn't rate him nearly as highly as Smith or Leaf. I'll be thankful if he can run the offense and not create too many turnovers.

At least Leaf will never have to worry about picking which helmet to wear into the Pro Football Hall of Fame because 1. They don't make helmets for jerks and 2. He is not even close to being voted in.

Leaf's start went from shitty to super shitty right from the beggining. Injuries, media, and fans were instantly relentless and it showed in his game. great guy. It just was too much for him too fast. It was not fun for him anymore period. The Ryan that lashed out was a beaten down, and miserable. It was tough to watch. Now he has moved on and is happier than ever. The nfl has moved on so should everyone else.
