The Phillies - Can We Believe?

Last year on this date, the Phillies lost to the Mets 10-9, capping off a missed opportunity to bury the Mets by sweeping a 4-game series. Instead, they lost the last three games, and enabled the Mets to draw within 2 1/2 games.

Of course, the 2008 season turned out just fine for the Philadelphia phaithful, and now that we look at 2009, the nemesis is the Florida Marlins, who currently sit 2 games out, after scoring a win in the last of three games against the resurgent Giants. Thank you, San Francisco, for taking two of three. We'll pay you back next call...

After some shaky baseball that included three humbling losses to the Braves, one loss in three games to Toronto and two more losses to Tampa Bay - a 3-6 stretch, things weren't looking so good for the Phils. Like their jaded fans, I'd wager that Charlie Manuel's team was probably all too glad to be done with the American League.

But we'll take our chances against the AL in November, won't we, boys? :-)

Of course, as mentioned earlier, the return to NL competition didn't start off all that well, as Atlanta kicked the snot out of the Phils' bullpen, savaged ace Cole Hamels and survived a gutsy 7-inning gem by J.A. Happ. In the midst of Sherman's march through Philadelphia, something good did come.

Continuing a surreal batting slump that inspired a wretched reworking of a classic song and included an 0-8 log in the first two games, Jimmy Rollins made like Lazarus and went 2-for-4 in the third game. It's true that a .209 average was nothing to write home about, but the performance was a welcome respite as they headed into the maelstrom of a three-game weekend series against the hated rival Mets.

This time, it would be different. No more would the Phillies lose in spectacularly bad fashion to their rivals. Nay, an unknown Rodrigo Lopez pitched a terrific 6 1/3 innings and enjoyed a scoreless performance by the bullpen to take game one by a 7-2 count. And... Jimmy Rollins went 2-for-5 and raised his average to .212.

Yes, it's true that the Mets have been decimated by injuries. But that aside, the Phillies need to start winning games that they should win. They've lost too many winnable games already, and now they had the Mets by the throat. Could they send them packing again on Saturday?

The elder and wise statesman Jamie Moyer came, saw and conquered the Mets, scattering five hits and surrendering one earned run in 6 1/3 innings. Moyer also enjoyed a scoreless relief effort from the uneven bullpen, including a 13-pitch, 8 strike pitching outing from the once invincible, now merely very good, Brad Lidge.

Now the stage was set for that most delicious of things: a three-game sweep of a hated rival. What could possibly be more demoralizing than that? And what could possibly take the wind out of the Phillies sails more than the Mets salvaging a win?

But it was not to be, as Joe Blanton came storming out and silenced the Met bats, limiting them to four hits over 7 1/3 innings, and protecting a slim 2-0 margin - fueled by solo homers courtesy of Rollins and All-World Chase Utley. What made this one all the more impressive was that the Phillies felled arguably the best pitcher in baseball, Johan Santana.

So the sweep was complete. And now Phillies fans had something to cheer. Will it last? Considering they are in a very similar position as they were last year at this time, it certainly seems possible. I'd like to believe in the Phillies... and a series like the one they had against the Mets goes a long way toward restoring one's faith.

Go Phils!!

I checked mlb.com for the standings (as I do at random times during the season), and I couldn't believe my eyes when I found out that the Mets are in 4th place. The Phillies are doing good, but could be doing better. Sure, they're in first place, and sure, they recently kicked the snot out of the Reds, 22-1, but with the amazing lineup that they have in Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Shane Victorino, Jimmy Rollins (even though he's not doing too well at the plate), Raul Ibanez (even though he's injured), and Jayson Werth... and as defending champs, I think we should be seeing these Phils with a larger lead than 2 games. The Marlins have their own problems with their pitching, the Braves are just starting to develop but still have a couple of links in their chain... and the Mets... well... yeah...

I agree that the Phils should be further out in front. I have not given them any slack this year, despite numerous Phillies fans reminding me that no matter how bad they looked, it was still early and they'd just won the World Series.

IMHO, if you are the defending WS champs, you should look like it. There should not be losses to the Padres or Orioles. You should be beating the Mets and Braves.

This isn't the first time this season that the Phils showed flashes of the great August/September 2008 play that carried them to the postseason. Now I'd love to see them maintain this momentum and build on that 2 game lead. It's not much. But if they keep playing like they've been in the past week or so, things are looking very good indeed for the Phils.

In my response to your comment, Sj, I believe that some of these Phillies fans are the same Phillies fans who believed their team would win 95-98 games, and believed their team would dominate the NL. So far, it looks like the Dodgers are this team. Right now, the Phillies are battling for first place, and could be in fourth place by the time next week approaches; it most likely won't happen, but I'm just saying... there's a lot of competition.

And I definitely agree. If you're the defending WS champs, you're should look like the team to beat. There is only one team that I can safely say deserves to be called "the team to beat"... and that's the Dodgers. I can't really say the Phillies, since they've been on and off, as they usually are the first half of the baseball season. However, if they keep this momentum going into the All-Star break, they should be all right. And you have to think about the Cole Hamels factor... as he was first injured, and since then, has been on and off, as well.

Not only him, but guys like Jimmy Rollins (whose batting average went up by about 20 points since you wrote that poem about him), Brad Lidge, the workhouse in Jamie Moyer, and (of course) Brett Myers.

Romi, I'm calling you out

Brett Myers is on the DL and is out for the season...most likely, his entire career as a Phillie is over

Ruben Amaro (Phillies GM) has said that they are looking to add an Ace. They've got the pieces in the system to make that type of move...they've also got J.A. Happ who's pitched really (really!!!) well. Joe Blaton's ERA for the last month has been 3.13

Yes, Cole Hamels is still a big question mark, but when he flips the switch, you know how good he can be...

Making the playoffs requires the best team in the division - once you're there, it's a total crap shoot - that's why, not matter how good a team is, there's never a guarantee

I am intrigued by the Dodgers. I referred to them as overblown, and I do believe this. If not for Brad Lidge's unfortunate timing/injury (blown saves), the Phils would have swept the Dodgers in a four-game series earlier in the year. Maybe the Dodgers are better than the Phillies, but they sure didn't look the part in that series. This is the Phillies team that I think they could/should be.

There aren't any teams in the NL that really scare me. I think the Phils are as good as any of them. And I agree with JuT. As long as the Phillies make the playoffs, anything can happen. And I'd bet that there aren't many teams that would be psyched to be facing the Phillies in the postseason.

I had no idea about Brett Myers, JuT. Thanks for informing on that.

I definitely agree that there are some new guys who have been performing much better than expected, i.e. J.A. Happ. He's been doing really well. Who'd ever think he'd come out of the bullpen pitching this well. His 5-0 record could've been 7 or 8 and 0 if the Phils gave him a little more run support.

Joe Blanton is another good pitcher who's been doing really well. He has a 2.61 ERA from if you only count his last 8 starts. I'm not buying the fact that he's going to stay like that until the end of the season. I'm still going to say his ERA with a 4.50ish ERA. But you're right... it looks like he's performing up to better than par.

And you guys are definitely right about things never being a given... especially in the MLB. There is never a guarantee for anything... when you're talking playoffs, a division, or even a regular season game. You could sweep every sucky team, and do decently well against good teams, and still not make the playoffs. There's just too much talent nowadays.

There are only 4 spots... and everyone's jocking for position. The Dodgers may have the better record, but like Sj argued, you can make it seem like the Dodgers aren't the #1 team in the league, since Philly can beat them on several occasions. Once you get to the playoffs, everything changes. Take two examples: the 2001 Mariners... and the 2006 Cardinals.

Hey, the Cubs had the best record in the NL last year and they were one-and-done Besides, on July 9, 2008 the Phillies were 6 games above .500 - the same as they are now.
