The Lacks of Blacks in Baseball: Trizz Digs In

So I was reading Niteowl's article, he brought up an interesting point on the lack of blacks in baseball, (after all you can't spell black without lack </quick lame joke>) but instead of leaving a long ass comment on his article I decided to have a "spin-off" of some sort.

Every year around Jackie Day, some stats geek releases a report on the amount of black players in the MLB, its a flawed report seeing as they don't count Latinos with black heritage but nevertheless it makes conspiracy theorists cringe, noble people concerned, and me say "give me a break". The percentage of black American players has dropped to 8%, and many wonder what's going on. While some could cry prejudice in other fields, in this day in age as far as sports concerned if you can play you will play regardless of race or in some cases age. As an African-American and a baseball fan, I'm not concerned because in the end it will work itself out as I will explain later. There are plenty of reasons blacksare turned off from the nations pastime. I will now go into a couple.

1. Lack of Role Models- Michael Jordan, Penny Hardaway, Allen Iverson, and previously Michael Vick. Those were my sports idols, I watched every game I could, I always played as them in video games and I have almost every home, away, alternate and throwback jersey. When you look at baseball there is that lack of a black superstar. There's Barry but he isn't exactly shown as a role model, but maybe that will change. You look at the game you have players like Ryan Howard, Delmon Young, Justin Upton they have the potential to be great. You show them on TV enough kids are going to grab a bat and want to be like them, but they don't get that exposure. You turn on the TV and you see a bunch of white players and the typical black child doesn't see someone he could emulate. Hell you look in the crowd, seeing a black person is like finding Waldo even in packed ass Fenway.

2. Convience Factor- Youth baseball is one of the more expensive sports, between uniforms, cleats, bats, gloves, balls, Tide detergent it could be a hassle. Look at youth basketball all you need is some shorts and sneakers. It's cheap, it's convenient, it keeps your child busy. Football is kind of expensive as well but it sort of contradicts the point I'm getting at so we're just going to leave that one alone. It doesn't take much to get a group of guys to play a pick up game of ball, to get a pick of game of baseball its much less convenient so basically more blacks are exposed to basketball more.

3. Lack of Peers- A lot of my friends don't like baseball, probably for the first two reasons I stated but I always did. But eventually it became a solo thing, no one wanted to just play for fun, I was on teams of kids I barely knew, no one wanted to watch the games with me prior to 2003, but really what ended my baseball career was in the 8th grade. I remember trying out for the JV team and I wanted to pitch, the coach kind of rolled his eyes when I told him that but he gave me all the paperwork I needed prior to trying out. So the morning of tryouts, and we was all stretching and I looked around and I just felt real out of place even though some of the kids were in my class I just didn't feel I belonged there. I made up some dumb excuse and just went home, never played organized baseball since.

4. Too Systematic- Unlike basketball when you basically score back and forth or football when you at least get to hit, baseball lacks that all around interest. I hated fielding, especially if nothing came my way I felt like I was just standing there which is why I wanted to pitch. I hated batting because none of the pitchers ever were that good so it was like i was always being unintentionally intentionally walked.

5. Hip Hop- Then again everything is hip hop's fault right. Hip Hop has become synonymous with basketball, rappers are in videos dressed like basketball players, basketball players are on TV dressed like rappers. As for baseball, there is no sort of love for hip hop. I play MLB 08 with the music off because all the songs suck and NBA Live's soundtrack sounds like a mixtape. Even though most rappers wear baseball caps but once again if it contradicts my point it shall be omitted.

Will things change, will the NBA continue to fall off leaving inner city kids to go to the MLB where all the money is at. Or will things take a turn for the worse and I'm going to have to brainwash my future kids into playing baseball, only time will tell. But regardless what happens I don't care because I see no problems. I know personally that since the Red Sox won, a lot of blacks here suddenly love baseball, maybe if the Yankees, Phillies, Dodgers umm not the Rockies and lets say the Cubs win then more blacks will hop on the bandwagon like baseball too. If not, football will always unite races alike until they release a report on the lack of latinos in the NFL...

With Football the necessary pads are typically provided by the team. and uniforms are returned at the end of the year. so all you really need is cleats, or not even that if the field is turf.

I have heard of all of these reason's before. I beg to differ on some of them.

Lack of role models- I am Caucasian, and my favorite players are Ken Griffey Jr. ,and Frank Thomas. A player does not have to be of the same race to be a role model, IMHO.

Convience Factor- most of these things are one time purchases, and most are not even necessary to buy. unless you need to play at home. We always played pick up games, we did not need two full teams. That fact that most kids do not hit the other way you typically only need to cover half the field. We typically played either a round robin, or 4 on 4. You can always just do BP, or a HR contest.

Lack of Peers- Can't help you out there, maybe you should have brought some buddies with you? If you want to do something, that should not stop you.

Too Systematic- Can say anything about this one, it is what it is, either you like it or you don't.

Hip Hop- hmm, I always saw that as a media cop out. most leagues embrace it, b/c of the revenue potential. IMHO

Having gone to school in Cinci not really. KG is on the Reds promotional crap, but they have slowly worked to scale back on that. In recent seasons theyve done more to push the younger players. And Barry Larkin is still the hometown hero

KG is 5 HR away from 600 career, and he has not ever been link ,associated, or even whispered about in Steroids. That should put him on top of the Role Model List. Big Frank, still has a .302 career BA, and 5+ HR. He has never been linked to performance enhancing drugs.

Forgot one thing. Out of all sports, baseball is without question the most difficult to master. A kid signs out of high school and is faced with three or four years in the minor leagues, riding buses, eating takeout, for maybe $2000 a month. If he went to college for four years, he still has a year or two in the minors. In other sports, basketball specifically, you can go to your high school graduation and play in the NBA the next day. No minor leagues, no long, hard ride to get to the top. The top is handed to you. So you now have a young, black kid, who even if he came from the middle class, on his own for the first time at 18 or 19 years old, with a million dollars in his pocket, and I don't know any kid, black, white or green with purple spots, who would turn that down.

Very good point. I think that is a big reason people dont flock to baseball. Think about it, how many times have you heard a player say I saw football, basketball as my way out. It was a way to a different life. With baseball unless your an amazing superstar you're gonna spend a 5 or more year aprentenceship in the Minors after you leave college. And for most thats just too much to take.

Along the lines of what KD said... if a player has options to toil as a star in the minors, riding busses or play 3-4 years of a mediocre NFL or NBA career, what will he choose?

On the other hand - there are guys like Carl Crawford that could have been a pro football or basketball player and chose baseball because it was the one he could play the longest... and he just loves the game.

If you learn the game early, I think it greatly enhances the chances you'll be a life long fan or not. If you played baseball and were half decent, it will never leave your blood.

Sorry, guys, I keep walking away, then having another idea and coming back again.

Where was baseball's opening day this year?

Five years ago, the Mets finished building a state of the art baseball academy in the Dominican Republic. Those 16-17 year old kids are now early 20's, and some are on professional rosters. Without the academy, they would never have been found, so they are taking roster spots from some others. And the Mets aren't the only one, just an example. I'm not suggesting these 50-60 Dominican kids on minor and major league rosters took roster spots from African American kids, nor am I suggesting the Japanese and Korean kids are doing the same thing, but 100 roster spots in the minors that didn't go to African American kids means 100 less chances at the major leagues.

And the Diamondbacks just finished a multi million dollar facility in Mexico that puts their Spring Training facility to shame. In five years, I venture a guess there will be far more Mexican players in their minor league sytem then there is now, which means far less roster spots for other players, African American or not.

Agreed, there is no doubt the impact hispanic players have on the rosters of MLB teams. However they also open a very messy bag of worms. The players coming out of those Dominican and Mexican camps dont have to go through the draft. Meaning they are essitiently a dime a dozen compared the what the Scott Boras players in the first round of the draft command. And now youre talking business moves not racial.

I think its a shame. I've noticed a decline in interest in baseball across the board. I keep hearing that kids don't like baseball because its too boring. I don't know...I've loved baseball ever since I can remember. I can remember as a kid going out back with a bat and a tennis ball, throwing it up, hitting it, chasing it and doing it again. My friends and I devised ways to play if there were only two or three of us. I hope that overall kids will come around to baseball again. Good, thought provoking article, Trizz.

Trizz, speaking specifically on your tryout experience, that was your fault buddy. I grew up in southern california where soccer is on par with basketball and only bows to american football. I always played up an age group and in game where each team had 18 players, 5 were hispanic and I was the only black player on either team. Needless to say I wasn't with any of my school friends, and wasn't with anyone who wanted a black kid who was younger then them taking "their" playing time. I spent much of my childhood playing expierence being picked on by teammates for being the youngest and being black. I never let it keep me from playing the game I love with undying passion. I paid my dues and took the shit because the game was more important and I knew the game was going to take me to college. So in my opinion, being the only black kid, being younger, being uncomfortble is never and excuse to not play or to not get where you want to go. My Dad would tell me when I would get upset after some practices "Son, your whole life will be tough and filled with pain and distress if you let others decide your life for you"

as a black ballplayer myself, i tend to be the one in school that everyone repsects because of how im into baseball. this was my first year in this high school and many didnt think i could get on the team because they havent seen me play on my old teams. but its nice to go out and prove them wrong. the problem with blacks in baseball is that if it is introduced into our lives, it wasnt introduced early enough. the past two years when ive tried out for different teams, there seems to be a respectable amount of blacks that show up to tryouts. but the number of blacks that make the team are slim. this is most likely from them not being introduced to it at a younger age and having a little experience playing baseball so that they could have the opportunity to play in whatever level they want. when i tried out for my freshman year, it was my first year ever handling a bat. i didnt make that team, but most of that came because i didnt have experience like the other people i was competing against. so i came back the next year and got a lucky spot on the team and now it seems like there isnt a problem with me playing at the same level as the other kids. i think its all just a timing thing. if more kids are introduced to it at a younger age, who knows...maybe they'll take more interest in it and continue througout the years playing it.

I agree with Si-hypocycloid. Not only there is a significant decline in baseball in the black community, but there seems to be a decline across the board. Baseball is not generating the interest that it used to and the current steroids scandal made thingd doubly worse. There is only a slim amount of baseball players today that young folks can idolize. I used to idolize Bonds, Mcgwire, Sosa and many of those and my younger brother did as well. Now that they have been exposed, who are the ballplayers today that the youth can look towards for inspiration. I'm sure MANY, MANY more players were on the juice. Baseball is becoming a distant 3rd now. Ratings for the World Series has dropped. I hate to say it, the new American pasttime is football.

My brother, who is 14 made the JV baseball team in his high-school. His high-school is in a community that is primarily African-American. He had a couple of years experience playing baseball in Little League, then he didn't play for a couple of years because he wasn't in the best of health. His athleticism got him on the team. I stressed to him to learn as much as the basics and fundamentals as he can because he hadn't played in a while. Of course, I assumed the coach would stress the fundamentals. However, I have to hear my brother coming home frustrated every game they lose because it is so plainly obvious to him and his teammates that his coach doesn't give a damn. He says his coach is just going through the motions. Practice ,Game, Blowout. Practice, Game, Blowout. There was one game in which he said that the pitcher balked 10 times!!!! Plus, he said that they make so many errors on the field. So now I KNOW they're not learning the fundamentals. My brother said that the worst part is that they are getting blown out every game and that his coach and consequently, his teammates don't give half of a damn. I had to talk him out of quitting. I told him that maybe it's in your calling to become a leader at this point and to get all you can out of the situation. With his situation, this is first-hand proof of baseball falling off the ladder in interest. Not to mention creating a culture where losing is accepted.

Yeah - fundamentals are pretty bad. Look at MLB players. There are many who can't field well and many who don't know what base to throw to...It's a shame. My son played baseball (and I was an assistant coach) and there wasn't much practice at all. They moved right into games. I don't know how you can instruct in a game situation. I was more concerned with making sure nobody got hit with the ball. My opinion - at young ages (maybe 10 and under) - it should be all instruction and no games.

It is disturbing to me what our PC society has done to sports these days. Most baseball leagues in my area preach just have fun, everyone gets to play, winning isn't everything, everyone gets a trophy, so nobody feels left out. Yes the kids are 8 but still, this was not the case when I was growing up. It is being made into a game, instead of a sport, IMO.
