The Jets and Favre is Not a Good Idea

Fall is almost here, and as such, football camps are getting into full swing this week. Time for us beat reports to have something to talk about. As such time to talk about the Gang Green, and this rumor about them and Brett Favre.

The news broke today, as reported on ESPN by Chris Mortensen, that the Jets have been granted permission to speak with Brett Favre. You all know how much I love the Jets, and I would love to see the Jets in the Super Bowl. And no one can deny the greatness of Brett Favre, he has had a storied career. But trading for Brett Favre is not the way for the Jets to make it to the promised land.

First of all, you already have healthy competition at the quarterback position. You can debate back and forth as to whether Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens should lead this team this year and going forward. The Jets have improved this off season with signings such as Alan Faneca, and Damien Woody and others. The Jets are trying to build a solid program for years to come. The process will not be furthered by acquring Brett Favre for one year.

Secondly, it will affect the chemistry of the team. Eric Mangini and Mike Tannenbaum have spoken at length about the type of players they want on this team. They want versatile players, and more importantly, they want team players. They want an atmosphere that is centered around the team concept. If they bring Brett Favre in here, it will be all about Brett Favre. The constant frenzy surrounding him and him alone will so far outway the couple of games they will win with him at the helm.

Finally, there is no good reason to make a move like this. They don't need to sell tickets, the Jets have been and will be sold out for years. By the time they open the new stadium, Favre will already be gone, so it isn't like they need to put a face on the new stadium. And, it is not as if the Jets need one player to make it to the Super Bowl. Favre needs to go to a team where the quarterback will put the team over the top. The media frenzy is not worth bringing him in to maybe go 9-7.

Bottom line, Mike, Eric, this is a bad idea. I am concerned that when Mangini was questioned about it today in a press conference, he said "It's internal." That leads me to believe that the conversations are fairly serious, otherwise the team would be willing to downplay it publicly. It scares me as a Jets fan. It's a bad idea and will set our development back. Mike, just say no to Favre.

The New York Jets have already had an outstanding offseason using their salary cap to make great moves. Kris Jenkins will be a monster in the middle. I was at their training camp practice today and he manhandled the Jets starting O-line, mainly Nick Mangold. OG Alan Faneca and FB Tony Richardson will shore up the Jets running game and the line will be able to keep Chad or Kellen up this year. They already drafted a rookie QB in Erik Ainge. It would be a waste of salary cap to have TWO high-priced veteran QBS on your team. The Jets must not make the mistake of gambling long-term success for the allure of winning now. They've put themselves in a good position for the long run. Signing Favre would ruin it.

All those moves were of the win-now variety, though -- possibly the last gasps to save Mangini and Tannenbaum's jobs... And adding Favre would be the ultimate win-now move. It would be perfectly in keeping with their offseason.

So true D21, Damien Woody and Allen Faneca aren't "investing in the future" acquisitions.

The moment that Favre signs on that dotted line and becomes a J-E-T, he becomes the face of the franchise. It will be about Favre and not the team. There's no question he's an upgrade over the QBs we have now. The Jets have put themselves in a stable position in which they should be successful for a while. That's a position they haven't been in lately. A 11-5 or 10-6 season would be followed by a 4-12 or 3-13 season with one injury. Getting Favre would have to mean getting rid of Chad. You pay a penalty cap-wise if you do that. With this move, their salary cap position is threatened greatly because other moves would have to take place as a result.

I wouldn't say that the competition between Clemens and Pennington is "healthy." There's no such thing as healthy QB competition in the NFL. And to use the old cliche: if you have two possible QBs, you really don't have any at all. The Jets have more problems than the QB position. But that is a glaring one right now. Favre doesn't fix the problem permanently, but he could act as a tourniquet and stop the bleeding. Also, if it's Favre/Pennington, or Favre/Clemens, then the QB competition disappears, which is always a good thing.

favre cannot just "be great" on the jets. they play in a tough division now. this isn't the shitty nfc where you can run slants all day. bill belichek will tear him apart. The bills have a great defense this year as well. Watch out brett! this is not going to be the cake walk that you expect! I hate to say this...but favre is going to suck
