The Eight Belles Post-Mortem: One Fan's Take

It has been three days since the tragic events unfolded at Churchill Downs took place, wherein Eight Belles was euthanized after breaking both of her front legs. Between PETA polluting the nation's airwaves (both on radio and television) and the aftermath from the perspective of Larry Jones and other associated with her, this story has gotten some serious mileage and a wide spectrum of opinions have been offered.

Well, here's where I'll put in my two cents on this matter.

If you read my user profile, you will find that I come from (and currently reside in) Saratoga Springs, New York, home to the Saratoga Race Course. As such, I make sure that horse racing gets a mention several times a year, including the 36-day meet in late summer. It was essentially the only time I put horse racing in as a diversion from baseball and auto racing in my Armchair Weekend in Review features.

To the citizens of Saratoga Springs, the track drives the local economy during the summer season, bringing in thousands of visitors from across the country – I may have exaggerated a bit, but just to give you a general idea. Now, unlike some of the residents of the Spa City, I am not a horse racing savant (I'll wager that many of you out there will be glad). While the Eight Bells tragedy has turned some people off of the sport, there are some who will still continue to watch it on TV and/or go out to their local tracks this summer to see it in person, as will yours truly once the 2008 meet begins in late July here in Saratoga. Until then, the sport will consider how to make sure anything like this doesn't happen again at any track in the United States.

One can only hope that this sport can ultimately come out of this tragedy in better shape, even two years removed from Barbaro. As a life-long citizen of a town raised on horse sense, the negative effects could be virtually devastating in the long run.

I happen to agree with you, JB. The PETA heads (MAY THEY ROAST IN HELL WITH APPLES IN THEIR MOUTHS!) are screaming that Eight Belles was on steroids. That is BULLSHIT! Granted, she was a filly but she was about the same size as the male horses. Steroids? I don't think so. Now the problem may be genetic, given the fact that she and Barbaro are related (albeit distantly). Giving a horse a drug is in most states illegal, if I am correct.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, and exerpted in today's Arizona Republic, ALL of the horses in the Derby were related.

Matter of fact, according to the report, through geneology tests, not only was the entire field related, but the past fourteen Derby winners were as well, traced back to 1953 Derby and Preakness winner Native Dancer.

The story goes on further to say that upon his death in 1967, autopsy results showed numerous defects, both inherant and incurred, with his legs and feet.

So, the problem appears to be generational inbreeding in which certain birth defects are passed down, sometimes with no effect, sometimes with catastrophic effects. The problem isn't steriods or drugs, but screwing your brothers and sisters.

Your right Manny, inbreeding is very common with dogs. Infact, with dogs the problem is far worse. It leads to many health problems with dogs too. The public needs to take a serious look at breeders of all species in my opinion.

The reason for that according to an article I read is that everyone wants horses that have the genes to win, so if they breed a male derby winner with a female even if they are related they will get what they want, makes sense i guess, but the real reasons the horse died was from the whip! HAHA

Eh, I can't wait until they have a race for clones of champions only...

While they will tell you endlessly that they don't give horses "steroids" - they won't tell you about the blood meds, anti inflammatories or pain meds they DO give them on race day.

They give the horses blood meds and anti-inflammatories so they don't burst blood vessels in their lungs and bleed to death from running so hard, or the pain meds to keep them from feeling the pain of going all out (Eight Belles ran with one broken ankle before breaking her other leg - how far could YOU run with a broken ankle without pain meds?)

These horses are trained for a specific duty - to run like they are on fire. If they are successful, they live extremely happy lives studding to their heart's content (or getting jacked off if they're a gay horse that refuses to do the deed naturally)

PETA is just looking to trap a few more suckers with bleeding hearts AFTER the fact, just like usual. They don't bitch this loud at Amish people who work the hell out of far inferior and less coddled to horses, do they?

Yes, they are inbred... so are the vast majority of dogs. Most dogs breeds that are popular today didn't exist until the late 1800's. If you think horses and dog inbreeding is bad, stay FAR AWAY from aquarium fish.

Inbreeding is man's way of playing Mother Ephing Nature for a quick profit.

And if anyone REALLY wanted to bitch about anything - they should question why the Triple Crown is still run on the much more dangerous dirt and turf instead of the newer, safer artificial turfs - turfs which have PROVEN to dramatically diminish injuries.

Why won't they change to the safer surface? Because the finish times would be altered compared to the great champions of yore...

Nostalgia trumps common sense yet again...

I completely agree. It's time to give up the ghost; Secretariat still holds the Derby record for a reason - he was a brilliant freak of nature.

Years ago when I lived in PA, my roomate and I would go to Penn National and hang out, I remember once we had some beer with this old gambler and he said it is impossible for a thoroughbred to run longer than a half mile without drugs.

Like Manny said, blood thinners, anti inflammatories, novocaine, (they are just numb enough not to feel severe pain). A horse is like any other animal, if it feels pain or discomfort it will stop running.

Without drugs, there is no racing. And I don't think synthetic surfaces will have an impact, a 1200 pound horse running 30 mph is still dangerous for the horse, dirt, synthetic or cotton balls.

The synthetic surfaces have proven to reduce injuries SIGNIFICANTLY but they also slow the speeds, thus the times - which means records would never get threatened and "the almighty lore" would be lost...

Why is it that ALL of a sudden horses are dying?

It's the same dirt track that was there 90 years ago and the horses were fine, all of a sudden the horse are getting injured?

Eight Belles was the only horse to die in the Kentucky Derby and all of a sudden you want the rules changed because of one horse?

It's part of life. These things will happen.

The Preakness is a dirt track, only Barbaro broke his leg and he survived for 2 years. No one has died on the track.

The Belmont track is dirt, no one has ever died on the track.

It's a huge horse, like Kels said, that is running at a rapid pace, what's it going to do?

Well, Dr. Know-it-all, they race more than ONE race on each of these tracks per year. And LOTS of horses have been injured as well as put down on each of these tracks in races OTHER than the premier events.

"No one has died at Preakness" - tell that to Union City

"No one has ever died at Belmont" - Tell that to Prairie Bayou and Black Hills as well as Charismatic - the horse that almost took a Triple Crown - who broke a leg but luckily survived.

Synthetic tracks are also safer for jockeys too.

Look, horses will be put down no matter what surface they get injured on, but synthetic surfaces are safer.

If NASCAR can make improvements after one of it's stars dies on the track (Earnhardt) then why can't thorobredracing?

And for the idiots that say "God made horses and God made them to run on dirt" - God also made them to breed on their own...

You really do put the "Stupid" in "Stupid Sideline Reporters" don't you?

Hate to pull the "experiences matter more than watching it on TV" card again but I know and have met several actual real-life jockeys as well as trainers, I have helped clean shit in thorobred stables and have been to real life horse races many times. I have followed the sport all my life thanks to my Mom and my one brother. Hell, my kids even play horseracing video games with me...

As for me being a "Know-it-all" - let me give you a hint/trick -don't comment about what you don't know and you'll always be not-wrong. This is why I don't comment on golf, soccer or college football - because I don't care for those sports - I know what I know and I know what I don't know, so combined, yeah - I AM a know-it-all.

But then again if you only commented on sports you know you'd never comment, would you?

Honestly, like I said above, the reason so many horses are daying is the breeding. Good breeding amplifies their natural traits - all of them. If you breed two fast horses that are a little crazy, for example, you're going to get a horse that is very fast and very crazy.

That's what's been happening on a major scale in racing in the recent past. So many of these horses are the result of selective breeding that tried to create a fast, light horse, which it has. But it's also created horses that are a lot more fragile then ones in the past, since that aspect has been multiplied along with the speed.

If horse racing wants to have a definite future, they need to expand their gene pool a bit.

I can't understand how in Britain, the Grand National has horses that can run 4 1/2 miles and jump 30 fences, yet here they couldn't run 1 1/4 miles on the flat. That's on turf, opposed to grass, I don't know if that's easier on the feet or not.

In 2008, at the Grand National, a horse called McKelvey had to be put down after the race, at a fall at one of the fences. That received less coverage, and nobody over here seemed to care. Interesting to compare the US v UK attitude.

The interesting thing about Eight Belles, she had one particular horse on BOTH sides of her ancestory. In human terms, the horse that was her grandmother was also her great-grandmother! Not sure about the specifics in the order, but it was something like that.

Alex, the difference is the way the horses are bred. American race horses are bred for speed. I would venture to guess that British breeders, while breeding for speed, are also looking for other traits such as Stamina and durability. And when you start looking for numerous traits, you have to sacrafice a little off the top of each individual trait.

C'mon Alex, it's steeplechase. Jogging around jumping over a small fence is far different than running full speed for a mile or so.
