The Charmed Ones

A quick check of the calendar will reveal it isn't 1993 and a quick check of the rosters shows no Eisenreich, no Nails and no Dutch. In fact, its been ten years since the Philadelphia Phillies moved Kevin Stocker for wall-fearing Bobby Abreu, almost two years since Abreu was then moved to the New York Yankees for six bags of peanuts and a case of beer, almost three years since slugger Jim Thome was moved for much-maligned Freddy Garcia and eight years since the Curt Schilling Trade, which yielded such Phillies greats as Travis Lee, Omar Daal, Vicente Padilla and Nelson Figueroa (The latter of whom only showed up in 2001, while the first overstayed their welcome).

And yet, since each of those trades, the Phillies have actually been better. With Schilling on the team, the Phillies were 641-751 (.460) and since the trade they've been a respectable 638-559 (.533). Since the Thome trade, the Phils have been 212-176 (.546) and since the Abreu trade, which quite literally yielded nothing, the Phils are 160-122 (.567). Better late than never I suppose.

But it sure feels like 1993. The Phillies are off to the best start since 1993 and sport .593 winning percentage, which would give them just over 96 wins if they continue at this pace.

They won 97 in 1993

No-doubt Team MVP Chase Utley is simply en feugo, being amongst the league leaders in the triple crown categories. Last year's MVP Jimmy Rollins is the spark plug for the Phils and even Ryan Howard has gotten into it with the long ball (making up for his mendoza-esque average).

But it isn't the raking that makes this team special.

Take Friday night's game against the Atlanta Braves in aptly nick-named "Hotlanta." The Phillies took an early 1-0 lead on a Shane Victorino triple and an Utley ground out to score 1 off Atlanta starter Tim Hudson. Hudson and Jamie Moyer would battle for six straight innings until Moyer yielded a two run blast to Brian McCann resulting ina 2-1 Atlanta lead. Then in the top of the ninth, down 1 after two walks, a ground out and a strike out, catcher Chris Coste steps into the box and prompty pops it up behind first base. Atlanta second baseman Kelly Johnson runs over to make the catch and stunningly drops it! The result, a 2-2 tie which leads to extra innings. The Phils score two in the top of the 10th to allow Brad Lidge to close it out. Lidge allows two singles inbetween the two outs he records before watchinbg Yunel Escobar step in. Escobar drives one to centerfield scoring one and setting up a play at the plate for the potential Braves tie. But thanks to Victorino's strong arm and impossibly perfect play, Brave Gregor Blanco is tug out at home. The Phillies win.

At this point, the Phils aren't good. They're charmed.

The MVP shortstop decides not to run out a popup and gets benched. Young James puts up little argument when taking a seat. The all-star slugging first baseman continues to press, batting a hair above .200, but players like Chase Utley and Pat Burrell prop up the team in need of a power surge. And the manager, often deamed a southern hick, too stupid to manage a team or at one point almost fighting a radio personality has a team clicking on all cylinders and playing at a level no one thought possible.

Sure feels like 1993.

And in a city dazed after 100 seasons of "no way" and "not quite" maybe this is the time? Maybe it doesn't take good anymore? Maybe it takes luck, love (a little skill) and the chance to be the charmed ones. A team that makes you feel that they can win each and every game. A team that is charmed into winning it all.

Hopefully there's no Joe Carter

One VERY BIG difference between 1993 and 2008. These guys take showers with soap.

OOPS! I mean, no one expected the '93 Phillies to break .500, a lot of people picked these Phils to win their division... Oh, and the '93 team had ZERO MVPs, while this one has 2 1/2.

Nice article (I guess this meets your quota for the summer, right?)

I got the bug this morning, so I wrote it...I'll admit, about halfway through, it got a little dicey Anyways, I do think they should move Burrell (still)...but Pat has a no-trade and he has no desire to go anywhere...

I don't know what it is about these Phillies, but they just feel good. Better than the Cubs, DBacks and every other NL "contender". I think they have as good a shot as anyone to win the Pennant.

For fearing of jinxing it, I've tried to keep my writing about the Phils down...that being said, they did just sweep the braves

Some years i just have a feeling...i had in 97 w/ the flyers and in 2004 with the eagles (who didn't?)...but they way they're playing right now, they just seem like such a great club...

Wait for the dog days i suppose...

A few thoughts...

Chris Coste got facked throughout his career by the Phillies. Don't believe me, pick up his book...

At one point Coste was batting over .400 during one of his minor league seasons. He got the call to the manager's office, but instead of the call to the majors, they decided to send him down to AA ball!!! Why? To make room for some new guy that I don't eve think ever made it to the majors...

That's all besides the point. Now onto the article at hand...

I can't believe I missed that throw by Victorino. I had to work the next morning so I haven't even seen it on any highlights... I'm a little pissed off about missing it...

"Players like Chase Utley and Pat Burrell prop up the team in need of a power surge." Ha, I think it's funny because I never would have thunk Burrell's name to be paired with Utley in any category...

If Utley wins the MVP, I'm pulling for Pedro Feliz for 2009 MVP to complete the cycle... Vote for Pedro

Please lord... no mo joe

One last thought... JuT wrote an opinion-article (as opposed to opinion-comment)!!! Great stuff JuT...

You erred when you said that "the Curt Schilling Trade, which yielded such Phillies greats as Travis Lee, Omar Daal, Vicente Padilla and Nelson Figueroa (The latter of whom never touched a Philadelphia uniform, while the first three shouldn't have)." Nelson Figueroa pitched for the 2001 Phillies, 4-5, 3.94 ERA.

I, for one, hope that winning games is all this team has in common with the '93 club. I am probably the only Phillies fan you'll find that doesn't (and didn't) like the '93 team. I rooted for them, but the players (other than Schilling and Eisenreich) did very little for me as a fan. As for 2008, I think that at some point we have to assume that luck and being a good team go hand in hand. I don't know if it's luck that enabled the Phils to take two of three from Florida and then sweep the Braves. To me, that just sounds like something that good teams do. This is a refrain that the Phillies need to keep repeating.

I would love to see the Phillies in the World Series this year. It seems like things are finally coming together.

Utley and Burrell are doing extrememly well with the bat.

Rollins has been back for a while, and you can tell with the Phils now in 1st place; he's quite the leader.

Ryan Howard had a bad couple of months, like last year, but I guarantee you that he's going to do well this summer and fall.

The bullpen is finally a bullpen. Gordon can actually pitch an inning without giving up a run this year. Getting Brad Lidge was also key.

I could see them going far in the playoffs, if they don't win it all that is.

Nice article, JuT.

I think Meg was right. Of all the teams contending in the NL right now, the Phils seem to have the most complete package. Solid offense, good defense, and a nice mix of veterans and young guys on the mound. They look good, and you can't deny it. You can say what you want about the Cubs and everything, and nevermind the fact that I fackin' hate them, they went nine straight against teams under .500, so when the Phils beat good teams like they are right now, it makes them look that much better.

It is encouraging that Brett Myers is pitching better recently and Eaton pitched well yesterday keeping the game close so the Phillies could take the win later in the game.
